What actually happened Seongwon doesn’t die and he doesn’t get away — Unit 1 baits his need to control every room into an arrest at a public art exhibition, and losing that control in front of everyone turns out to be a worse defeat for him than jail. Yi-soo is the one who makes the arrest possible: badly hurt after Seongwon’s accomplice, Hwang Jong-su, knocks him out and sets fire to the basement to destroy the evidence, he gets out anyway, carrying proof — a hidden collection of mementos taken from Seongwon’s victims — that finally closes the case.
He does it as a civilian. The show never hands Yi-soo his badge back, and doesn’t pretend that’s the point of the finale — what matters to him by episode fourteen isn’t the title, it’s being back in the room when it counts.
Yi-soo and Hye-ra Nothing about the ending forces them into a couple, and the show is better for resisting it. What actually resolves is trust: the boss who spent the first half treating him like an impulsive liability stops seeing him that way, and he stops treating her authority as something to work around. They finish the case as partners — the relationship this season was actually building toward underneath fourteen episodes of case-of-the-week banter.
It’s also the real shape of Seongwon’s downfall. Money and status bought him a season and a half of untouchability, right up until two detectives who never had either of those things outworked him anyway.
