Lee Yu-bin (Ji Chang-wook) is a perfectionist spatial designer at the top of his game in Seoul — until a single overnight collapse takes everything with it. He washes up on Charo Island, a remote strawberry-farming community in Japan, about as far from his old glass-and-steel life as it’s possible to get. There he meets Shirahama Karin (Mio Imada), a farmer as devoted to her strawberry fields as she is quietly private about a health condition she doesn’t talk about. The trailers have already given away the joke: watching a polished Seoul perfectionist get slowly, thoroughly covered in dirt is most of the appeal, and the show seems perfectly happy to lean into it.

What makes Merry Berry Love more than a stunt rom-com is the production behind it — the first drama ever jointly made by Japan’s Nippon TV and Korea’s CJ ENM, filmed across both countries and airing simultaneously on NTV and Disney+ starting October 7. It’s also Ji Chang-wook’s first romantic comedy in three years, and cast and crew have already described the shoot as one where ‘laughter never ceased on set.’ None of that guarantees the finished show earns its romance rather than just its premise, but a first-of-its-kind format and a lead actor returning to a genre he’s proven good at makes this one of the more genuinely curious upcoming picks of the season.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest opinion — and the kind of viewer who’ll love it most.

🍓 Strawberry Field Fresh Start 🏝️ Island Reinvention 🇰🇷🇯🇵 A Historic K-J Crossover 😅 Fish-Out-of-Water Comedy

Ji Chang-wook’s last major role, in If You Wish Upon Me, was a quiet, healing drama about people rebuilding themselves in a hospice — not exactly rom-com territory. Merry Berry Love keeps his interest in stories about starting over from nothing, but trades the hospice for a strawberry farm and the melancholy for slapstick, which is exactly the kind of tonal reset that makes a returning-to-genre role interesting to watch rather than just comfortable.

Merry Berry Love (2026) — cinematic still

The premise — a polished city professional gets humbled and slowly won over by unglamorous rural work and the person who does it — is a durable K-drama shape, the same engine that made Business Proposal work as pure, unashamed comfort viewing. What Merry Berry Love adds is the cross-border angle: a Korean lead, a Japanese lead, and a production that’s genuinely the first of its kind between the two countries’ biggest networks, which gives the fish-out-of-water gags an extra layer beyond the usual class-clash setup.

The honest caveat, as with any pre-air pick: a cast having fun on set and a novel co-production deal don’t automatically add up to a show that earns its romance instead of coasting on its premise. Karin’s undisclosed health condition is the one plot thread with real weight attached to it, and how seriously — or lightly — the show chooses to handle it will say a lot about what kind of rom-com this actually turns out to be.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🍓 Fans of Ji Chang-wook’s rom-com side, back after three years away from the genre 🐌 Anyone who enjoys a slow, comfort-food romance built around rural, unglamorous work 🌏 K-drama and J-drama watchers curious about a genuinely first-of-its-kind cross-network production

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Ji Chang-wook returning to romantic comedy for the first time in three years
A rare, genuinely novel format — the first Nippon TV/CJ ENM co-production, filmed across two countries
A tight 10-episode, once-a-week run built for easy, low-commitment comfort watching

What to know first
Anticipation Pick — no episodes have aired yet, so the tonal blend between Korean and Japanese storytelling is untested
The fish-out-of-water comedy needs to earn the romance underneath it, not just coast on the premise
Airs on Nippon TV in Japan, with Hulu and Disney+ covering the international release

Anticipation Pick— A first-of-its-kind Korea-Japan rom-com betting on a strong lead and a genuinely fresh format to sell a familiar city-slicker-meets-countryside premise.
