Ji Chang-wook’s last major role, in If You Wish Upon Me, was a quiet, healing drama about people rebuilding themselves in a hospice — not exactly rom-com territory. Merry Berry Love keeps his interest in stories about starting over from nothing, but trades the hospice for a strawberry farm and the melancholy for slapstick, which is exactly the kind of tonal reset that makes a returning-to-genre role interesting to watch rather than just comfortable.

The premise — a polished city professional gets humbled and slowly won over by unglamorous rural work and the person who does it — is a durable K-drama shape, the same engine that made Business Proposal work as pure, unashamed comfort viewing. What Merry Berry Love adds is the cross-border angle: a Korean lead, a Japanese lead, and a production that’s genuinely the first of its kind between the two countries’ biggest networks, which gives the fish-out-of-water gags an extra layer beyond the usual class-clash setup.

The honest caveat, as with any pre-air pick: a cast having fun on set and a novel co-production deal don’t automatically add up to a show that earns its romance instead of coasting on its premise. Karin’s undisclosed health condition is the one plot thread with real weight attached to it, and how seriously — or lightly — the show chooses to handle it will say a lot about what kind of rom-com this actually turns out to be.
