👩 Who Is Son Ye-jin?

Twenty-five years into her career, Son Ye-jin spent 2025 in a black comedy about desperation, not romance. No Other Choice, Park Chan-wook’s adaptation of Donald E. Westlake’s The Ax, cast her as Lee Mi-ri, wife to a laid-off paper mill manager who turns violent to reclaim his place in a shrinking job market. The film premiered at the Busan International Film Festival before playing Venice, Toronto, and New York — a festival circuit Son hadn’t walked in years, since the role marked her return to the big screen after a seven-year break from film work. Critics singled her out for bringing warmth and human resonance to a script built on cynicism, the kind of small, exact choices that don’t show up in a synopsis.

That range has been there since the start, even if the label attached to her wasn’t built for it. Son earned the nickname “Nation’s First Love” in the early 2000s off the back of The Classic and A Moment to Remember, two films that turned her into the face of innocent, doomed romance across East Asia. She’s spent the two decades since pulling against that image without ever fully shedding it — playing a con artist juggling two husbands in My Wife Got Married, a North Korean defector’s unlikely love interest in Crash Landing on You, a Joseon princess sold into a political marriage in The Last Princess. Six Baeksang Arts Awards, four Grand Bell Awards, and six Blue Dragon Film Awards later, she remains one of Korean cinema’s most consistently working leading women, rarely off screens for more than a year or two at a stretch.

Biography

🌱 Early Life

Son Eon-jin — her legal name, though the world knows her by her stage name — was born January 11, 1982, in Daegu’s Suseong District. She’s described her childhood self as shy to the point of dreading it: presenting in front of classmates gave her stage fright, and acting only became appealing in middle school once she realized it let her try on personalities that weren’t hers to keep. That’s a common enough origin story for actors, but for Son it stuck specifically enough that she moved to Seoul for college in 2000 with performing already the plan, not a fallback.

She enrolled at the Seoul Institute of the Arts to study film that same year, one semester before Secret Tears gave her a small voice role and Delicious Proposal made her a name. The gap between a shy teenager avoiding eye contact in class and a lead actress carrying a 30%-rated MBC drama closed in under two years — fast enough that whatever stage fright she’d had clearly didn’t survive the transition to camera.

🎤 Career Beginnings

Son was scouted while a freshman film student, and her actual break arrived in 2001: the lead in Delicious Proposal, an MBC drama that pulled a 30% viewer rating and put her name in front of a mainstream audience for the first time. It didn’t come easy. Reviewers picked apart her acting in those early years, and Son later said she avoided dating or seeing friends for three years after debuting, treating the criticism as something to out-work rather than argue with.

The turning point came in 2003, doubled. Lovers’ Concerto and The Classic both hit theaters that year, but it was Kwak Jae-yong’s The Classic — a Ji-hye/Joo-hee dual role built around a decades-spanning letter-writing romance — that traveled furthest, picking up wide distribution across Hong Kong and mainland China and turning Son into an early Hallyu export before the term had fully caught on. Summer Scent followed later that year, cementing the run. Three credits, one calendar year, and the shy stage-fright-prone teenager from Daegu had become one of the country’s most bankable young actresses.

🎬 Acting Style

Critics have circled back to the same word for two decades: versatility. Son built her name on innocent romantic leads — The Classic, A Moment to Remember — then spent the years since actively working against that image, playing a woman juggling two marriages in My Wife Got Married (2008) and a manipulative con artist in The Art of Seduction (2005) well before genre-subversion became a common talking point for Korean leading women. Something in the Rain (2018) sits closer to the middle of that range: as Yun Jin-a, a coffee-brand marketer navigating a relationship with her best friend’s younger brother, she carries a slow-burn adult drama almost entirely on restraint — on what she doesn’t say in a given scene rather than what she does.

That control over emotional pacing is what critics keep returning to. Her performance as Princess Deokhye in The Last Princess (2016) — a Joseon royal stripped of her title and shipped off to a political marriage in Japan — drew praise specifically for depicting what one reviewer called “the unfathomable depths of emotional ups and downs” without tipping into melodrama for its own sake. The same instinct shows up across Crash Landing on You’s tonal swings between comedy and wartime tension, and again in No Other Choice’s black-comedy register. She plays the emotional truth of a scene first and lets the genre sort itself out around her.

✨ Legacy

The numbers alone put Son in rare territory: six Baeksang Arts Awards, four Grand Bell Awards, six Blue Dragon Film Awards, and — per Korean entertainment press — the youngest actress to complete the unofficial “Grand Slam” of Best Actress wins across all three major ceremonies, achieved by age 34 across three different roles. A Moment to Remember set box office records in Japan and sold over two million tickets domestically; April Snow performed similarly across Japan and China. Those numbers built her into a genuine Hallyu export before the current wave of Korean content had a name for itself internationally.

Crash Landing on You reset the scale of that reach entirely. The 2019 drama became one of the most-watched Korean series of its era, made Son a fixture on Forbes Korea’s Power Celebrity 40 list for four consecutive years (2019–2022), and — off-screen — introduced her to her now-husband and co-star Hyun Bin. Twenty-five years after Delicious Proposal, she’s still one of the few Korean actresses whose name alone can open a project in multiple markets at once.

🆕 Recent & Upcoming Projects

No Other Choice carried Son through most of 2025’s festival calendar, but two very different projects are already lined up behind it. The Scandal, a period romance for Netflix loosely inspired by the 2003 film Untold Scandal, casts her as Lady Cho, a noblewoman who proposes a dangerous game of temptation with Ji Chang-wook’s Cho Won — her first series built specifically for Netflix’s global slate, set for release in the back half of 2026. Son has said she’s equal parts excited and nervous about it, aware the platform’s reach dwarfs anything a broadcast network could offer.

Behind that, Variety — a separate Netflix series from writer-director Kim Yong-hoon — casts her as Se-eun, a powerful entertainment executive gambling everything to revive an idol group she built from scratch, a premise pulled straight from the anxieties of the K-pop industry itself. Between a decades-spanning historical romance and a hyper-contemporary industry drama, the two projects land at opposite ends of her range, both due out within months of each other.

Their son, Kim Woo-jin, was born on November 27, 2022.

She and Hyun Bin have made repeated joint charitable donations, including ₩200 million to the Hope Bridge Disaster Relief Association after the 2022 Uljin–Samcheok wildfires and ₩200 million to Samsung Medical Center in late 2025; she separately donated ₩100 million to the Community Chest of Korea in her hometown of Daegu in February 2020 for COVID-19 relief.
