🕴️ Who Is Song Joong-ki?

In Space Sweepers, the 2021 sci-fi blockbuster that became one of Netflix’s most-watched non-English films, Song Joong-ki spends most of the runtime scavenging orbital debris alongside a beat-up spaceship crew — about as far from the earnest army captain who made him a household name in Descendants of the Sun as his filmography gets. That’s been the throughline of his career since finishing military service: Song keeps taking roles that actively work against the persona that made him famous in the first place.

That departure runs through nearly everything he’s done since. Vincenzo cast him as a Mafia-raised lawyer willing to use organized crime’s own tactics against corporate villains — a role critics and fans alike called his first real antihero — and Reborn Rich, built around a loyal secretary reincarnated to bring down the family that wronged him, became one of the biggest Korean dramas of 2022. Long before either, reviewers had already dubbed him the ‘savior of melodrama’ for The Innocent Man and A Werewolf Boy, so the range isn’t new. What’s changed is which side of his charm he leads with.

Biography

👶 Early Life

Song Joong-ki was born on September 19, 1985, in Daejeon, the middle of three children between an older brother and younger sister, Song Seul-ki. Long before acting entered the picture, he was a competitive short track speed skater, representing his home city at the national level through junior high — a discipline he’s credited with giving him the drive that later carried into his career. A knee injury in his first year of high school ended that path for good, forcing a pivot he hadn’t planned for.

He redirected that competitiveness into schoolwork, scoring 380 out of 400 on Korea’s national college entrance exam, a result strong enough to get him into Sungkyunkwan University’s business program. His father, unconvinced that acting was a stable path, initially opposed the idea outright, and Song himself has said he was ambivalent about the industry even after a talent agent scouted him on a Seoul subway while he was preparing for his entrance exams. He didn’t act on it right away — the shift into acting as a full-time pursuit came only in his third year of university, after an unrelated detour: a second-place finish as a contestant on KBS’s Quiz Korea in 2006.

🚀 Career Beginnings

Song’s screen debut came almost as an afterthought to the plan — a supporting role as No-tak in the 2008 film A Frozen Flower, followed by a string of small television parts that kept him working without making him especially visible: a reporter in Get Karl! Oh Soo Jung, a university student in Love Racing, a butler in My Fair Lady. None of them asked much of him beyond being agreeable to look at.

That changed with Sungkyunkwan Scandal in 2010, a coming-of-age sageuk that cast him as Goo Yong-ha, one of four students at Korea’s Confucian academy caught up in gender-swap intrigue and quiet rebellion. The role made him a name rather than a face, and the same year he joined the original cast of Running Man, a variety show that would go on to define an entire generation of Korean television, though he left it within a year to focus on acting. By 2011, that focus had paid off: his performance as the young version of King Sejong in Tree with Deep Roots, limited as the screen time was, was enough to convince critics he had range beyond period-drama charm.

✨ Acting Style

By 2012, reviewers had started calling Song the ‘savior of melodrama’ — a label that stuck after The Innocent Man and A Werewolf Boy, two projects that leaned hard into heartbreak and got him described as a ‘charismatic, swoon-worthy leading man’ capable of carrying an entire genre on audience goodwill alone. Descendants of the Sun four years later pushed that image further than any single role had before, turning a wartime romance between a special forces captain and a field surgeon into one of the most-watched Korean dramas ever made across Asia, and settling into a more overtly masculine register than the softer roles that preceded it.

What’s followed since has moved deliberately away from that persona. Vincenzo asked him to play a Mafia consigliere turned vigilante lawyer — his first real antihero, by his own description, charm weaponized rather than charm as the whole point. Reborn Rich went further still, giving him a dual role as a murdered secretary reincarnated into the family that killed him, anger dressed up as good manners. He pushed the reinvention furthest in Hopeless (2023), disappearing into a supporting gang enforcer role dark enough that it won him Best Supporting Actor at the Buil Film Awards — the least conventionally ‘leading man’ performance of his career, by design.

🌟 Legacy

Descendants of the Sun remains the clearest marker of Song’s reach beyond Korea — the drama topped ratings charts across Asia, made him a fixture on regional endorsement deals as what local media nicknamed a ‘CF king,’ and helped export the modern K-drama boom to markets that hadn’t paid it much attention before. He’s landed on Forbes Korea’s Power Celebrity 40 list six times since 2012, cracking the top ten on four of those occasions, and Gallup Korea named him Television Actor of the Year twice, in 2012 and again in 2017 — five years apart, which says something about staying power rather than a single lucky year.

The Baeksang Arts Awards Daesang he won for Descendants of the Sun in 2016, Korean television’s highest individual honor, remains the high-water mark on his awards shelf, backed by matching Grand Prizes the same year at the KBS Drama Awards and APAN Star Awards. Later work has earned a different kind of recognition: a Baeksang nomination for Vincenzo in 2021, and Best Supporting Actor at the Buil Film Awards in 2023 for Hopeless, a low-budget crime thriller he reportedly took no salary for after it was invited to Cannes’ Un Certain Regard sidebar.

🚧 Recent & Upcoming Projects

Song’s post-2022 run has moved almost entirely toward global streaming. My Name Is Loh Kiwan (2024) cast him as a North Korean defector fighting for refugee status in Belgium, a performance built on restraint rather than charm, while Bogotá: City of the Lost — released on Netflix that December — followed a Korean immigrant’s rise through Colombia’s black market, another lead built around desperation rather than charisma. In between, he made a widely noted cameo as Vincenzo Cassano in Queen of Tears, reprising the role for a crossover moment that became one of that drama’s most talked-about episodes.

2025 brought him back to television leads with My Youth, a JTBC drama reuniting two former lovers fifteen years on, alongside a smaller cameo appearance in Romantics Anonymous. Ahead of him is Love Cloud, a confirmed starring role as Kang Wu-ju currently in production, with release expected in 2027 — his first new drama lead announced since My Youth wrapped.
