Portrait of a Family
🎬 Film Overview
Joong-goo (Ryu Seung-ryong) was a baseball star and Nam-mi (Ha Ji-won) a film actress, and together they were one of Korea’s happiest celebrity couples. Then a girl named Dong-joo (Kim Si-a), Joong-goo’s secret daughter, turned up at their door, and the life they had built fell apart. Eight years on, Dong-joo is pulled into the death of a middle-school girl and named as a leading suspect. The estranged family has little left to lose, and Joong-goo and Nam-mi decide to fight a battle they are not expected to win. Director Lee Ji-won shot the film in 2021, and it reached cinemas in September 2026 after a delay of about five years. The Korean title, Bigwang, refers to a card in the hwatu game, which one Korean outlet reads as a symbol of a family that is complete only when it is together.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take
Straight talk on whether this one’s worth watching, and for who.
The best part of the premise is how little it asks the couple to be heroic. Joong-goo and Nam-mi are former stars whose fame has already cost them, and the Korea Times says Ha Ji-won sheds her polished image here. A parent fighting an uphill fight for a child puts this in the same emotional territory as Miracle in Cell No. 7, though the tone here is quieter and closer to noir.
Kim Si-a has the hardest role, since Dong-joo is both the cause of the family’s collapse and the person they now try to save, and the Korea Times singles out how much she conveys through her eyes. The director has said he cared more about the family’s feelings than the hunt for a culprit, which explains why reviewers split on the mystery. For a darker family-in-crisis story in series form, A Model Family is a natural pairing.
We are holding back a verdict for now. How the case and the family’s story resolve is still being confirmed across Korean coverage, and we only publish the story and ending sections once they hold up across several reliable sources. For now, treat this page as the setup, the cast and the case for watching.
