📖 The Story

No spoilers ahead — just enough to see if it fits your taste.

Moon Ki-sung is a hunter who lives alone in a remote mountain area and keeps his distance from almost everyone. He is the only survivor of a mining accident that left him traumatized and isolated, and he still remembers the dying wish of a fellow miner: to look after that man’s daughter, Kim Yang-soon. Ahn Sung-ki plays him as a quiet, weathered man whose old guilt has hardened into a promise.

The Hunt (2016) — Moon Ki-sung, played by Ahn Sung-ki, aims his shotgun with a wounded face in The Hunt (2016)

The trouble starts when raw gold is discovered deep in the woods. Park Dong-geun, played by Cho Jin-woong, leads a group of armed gold hunters into the mountain to mine it, and the crew arrives with guns and very little interest in the people who already live there. Several neighbors in the area see the hunters by chance, which is exactly what turns an ordinary mining job into a life-or-death problem.

The first clash is with an old woman who tells the newcomers that her sons own the land and the gold. The argument ends with her death. Her granddaughter, Yang-soon, and the local hunter Ki-sung are pulled into the conflict from that moment, and Dong-geun orders his men to flush out everyone who saw what happened.

From there the film becomes a chase. The witnesses are scattered across the forest, and Ki-sung, the one person who knows the terrain and can shoot, decides to protect his neighbors. Han Ye-ri’s Yang-soon is not a passive victim in this: she runs, hides and keeps moving, and the film spends a lot of its runtime following her through the trees.

The gold hunters are not a faceless mob. Cho Jin-woong’s Dong-geun is the man giving the orders, and the film also gives time to the men around him, including the sharply dressed, sunglasses-wearing figure who walks into the woods as if it were a business trip. Kwon Yul, Park Byung-eun and Kim Yoon-sung round out a group whose rivalries and loyalties keep shifting.

The Hunt (2016) — Yang-soon, played by Han Ye-ri, runs through the forest in The Hunt (2016)

Structurally, the film leans on a deadly cat-and-mouse game: Ki-sung uses his hunting skills to stay ahead of a far larger, better armed group, and the mountain itself becomes part of the fight. It is also built around flashbacks and tangled character relationships, which is the point where critics split. HanCinema’s William Schwartz called it excessively complicated, while Korean outlet NewsTomato praised the sustained suspense and the actors.

Behind the camera, director Lee Woo-chul and writer Cheon Jin-wu made a deliberately physical thriller. Most of the shoot took place in a mountainous part of Paju in Gyeonggi Province, which sits next to military bases, so the crew needed permission from more than ten military units, and the cast completed a basic firearms course before filming. The Hunt opened in Korea on June 29, 2016, and went to number one on its first day.

🏁 Ending Explained

Full spoilers from this point — what happened, and why.

⚠️ Full Spoilers Ahead — This section covers the complete ending of The Hunt. Stop here if you haven’t watched.

What actually happens The finale reports we could verify are limited, so this summary sticks to what the available recaps agree on. Ki-sung keeps fighting to protect Yang-soon from the gold hunters until morning, and he dies of the wounds he suffers along the way.

The Hunt (2016) — Moon Ki-sung aims a shotgun while Yang-soon stands beside him in the forest in The Hunt (2016)

Yang-soon survives. That is the point of Ki-sung’s whole stand: the promise he made to a dying miner years earlier is kept, even though it costs him his life.

The police arrive Near the end, the police step in. Detective Squad Chief Son, played by Son Hyun-joo, appears in the final stretch and takes Yang-soon to safety. After a film in which the authorities are almost absent, their late arrival feels less like rescue and more like the aftermath of what Ki-sung already did.

The Hunt (2016) — Armed gold hunters advance through the autumn forest in The Hunt (2016)

According to one film summary, the gold that so many people died for turns out to be worthless. We could confirm this from only one source, so treat it as a reported detail rather than settled fact.

What the ending means We could not verify further details of the finale, such as what happens to every member of the gold hunting group, so we are not going to guess. What is clear is the shape of the ending: the hunter who spent years isolated by guilt gives his life for the girl he was asked to protect, and she walks out of the mountain alive. That is a fairly bleak, bittersweet close, in line with a film that is more about duty than victory.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Worth watching or not — our honest read, and who it’s for.

🎬 Director Lee Woo-chul Known for: Lee Woo-chul directed The Hunt from a script by Cheon Jin-wu, and the film was produced by Kim Han-min, the director of The Admiral: Roaring Currents. The production favored real locations: most of the shoot took place in a mountainous part of Paju in Gyeonggi Province, which contains military bases, so the crew had to obtain permission from more than ten military units. The cast also finished a basic firearms course and practiced at shooting ranges, which shows in how the guns are handled on screen.
🏔️ Mountain Survival🔫 Hunter vs Hunters🏃 Chase Thriller🍂 Autumn Forest

The best thing here is the premise and the setting. A lone hunter with a guilty past, a gang that came for gold, and a forest where everybody can be seen and nobody can be reached makes for a simple, readable thriller, and the autumn photography makes the woods feel like a character. Ahn Sung-ki is the anchor: he does a lot with very little dialogue. If you are looking for another Korean hunt, note that Hunt (2022) is a separate spy thriller and not related to this film.

The Hunt (2016) — cinematic still

Where the film struggles is structure. The flashbacks and the web of relationships among the gold hunters are what critics pointed to when they called it complicated, and even reviewers who liked the performances and the suspense said the story has flaws. TMDB users are lukewarm too, with a 5.2 average from 11 votes, so go in expecting a solid chase rather than a classic.

As a free, 93-minute watch, it is an easy recommendation for fans of survival thrillers, and a reasonable one for anyone curious about Ahn Sung-ki and Cho Jin-woong sharing a film. Just note that the stream is region-limited, mainly the United States.
