Palace Intrigue

Yeon Ji-yeong (Lim Yoon-a) is at the peak of her career — a French cuisine chef who has just won the most prestigious cooking competition in Paris. On her flight home, she time-slips into the Joseon dynasty during a solar eclipse, landing at the court of King Yi Heon (Lee Chae-min): a young ruler history remembers as both the greatest gourmet and the cruelest tyrant. Mistaken for a supernatural creature, Ji-yeong narrowly escapes execution by doing the one thing she knows best — cooking. A single dish is enough. The king makes her his Chief Royal Cook.

What follows is a survival story disguised as a love story — and sometimes the other way around. Ji-yeong must cook her way through palace politics, a scheming royal consort, and a Ming Dynasty cook-off, all while navigating her growing feelings for a king she knows is headed for ruin. Behind Yi Heon’s tyranny is a man consumed by grief over his mother’s murder, looking for someone who feeds him the way his mother once did. Food is the language they share before they have the words.

📺 Episode Guide

Spoiler-light recaps — enough to remember where you left off, nothing that ruins the feast.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 1
EP 01
The First Course
August 23, 2025
Ji-yeong wins the biggest competition of her career in Paris — and wakes up in the wrong century. Her first encounter with King Yi Heon goes about as well as you’d expect: he wants her executed. What saves her isn’t wit or luck but a single bowl of gochujang butter bibimbap that reminds him of something he’d buried long ago. Lee Chae-min establishes the king’s register immediately — unpredictable, dangerous, and just curious enough to be dangerous in a different way.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 2
EP 02
Royal Kitchen Rules
August 24, 2025
Ji-yeong gets a tour of a palace she knows from history books — which is both useful and terrifying. She’s appointed Chief Royal Cook, a title that comes with zero security and the constant threat of losing her arms. The Joseon sous vide sequence is genuinely funny, and Kang Mok-ju enters the picture with exactly the energy you’d expect from someone who has been the most dangerous woman in the palace until now.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 3
EP 03
Haute Joseon
August 30, 2025
Ji-yeong attempts French haute cuisine with Joseon ingredients — a premise that should be absurd but lands because the show commits to it completely. Yi Heon’s reaction to the food tells us more about his grief than any dialogue could. The episode also clarifies what’s actually driving his tyranny: not cruelty for its own sake but a man running a very long revenge operation.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 4
EP 04
The Soup That Moved a Queen
August 31, 2025
A royal cooking competition with Ji-yeong’s arms on the line — and the episode the show earns its food-as-emotion premise. The clam spinach doenjang soup she creates from scraps moves the Dowager Queen to tears by tasting like her mother’s last meal. It’s the moment the drama stops being a clever premise and becomes something with genuine weight. The drunken kiss at the end is less of a surprise than the soup.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 5
EP 05
Snowflake & Silence
September 6, 2025
Yi Heon begins to pull back — the kiss happened, and now neither of them knows what to do with it. Ji-yeong’s response is to cook him a schnitzel that looks like snowflakes, which is exactly the kind of logic this drama runs on. The episode is quieter than the ones before it, but Lee Chae-min does more with a single expression across a dinner table than most actors do with full scenes.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 6
EP 06
Black Sesame
September 7, 2025
Kang Mok-ju escalates her schemes and the episode reminds you that the palace is not a safe place — it’s just one Ji-yeong has learned to navigate. The macaron scene is a crowd favorite for good reason: it’s the first time Yi Heon genuinely laughs, and Lee Chae-min plays the confusion of a man feeling something unfamiliar with uncomfortable precision. Gil-geum gets her first real moment of agency here.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 7
EP 07
Rain and Green Onion
September 13, 2025
A rainy day, a pajeon, and a king who has never been cooked for without an agenda behind it. This is the episode where the romance stops being subtext — Yi Heon isn’t eating Ji-yeong’s food anymore because she has to cook it. He’s eating it because she made it for him. The shift is subtle and Lim Yoon-a plays it without underlining it.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 8
EP 08
The Ming Challenge
September 14, 2025
The Ming envoy arrives and brings a master cook who has never lost a competition — and the drama pivots into an extended culinary battle arc that divides viewers. The rice wine beef bourguignon is the episode’s visual centerpiece, and the production design is genuinely cinematic. Whether four episodes of cook-off earns its runtime is the show’s most debated question.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 9
EP 09
Pressure Cooked
September 20, 2025
Ji-yeong invents the pressure cooker in 1504. It’s as chaotic as it sounds, and it works. The cook-off reaches its peak tension — not over the food but over what winning or losing means for Yi Heon’s political survival. The kitchen staff dynamic, which has been building quietly since episode 2, pays off here in ways that are genuinely warm without being sentimental.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 10
EP 10
The Joseon Restaurant
September 21, 2025
The cook-off concludes and the show snaps back to its emotional core: Yi Heon is running out of time before the Gapsin Purge, and Ji-yeong knows exactly how this ends if nothing changes. The episode is the series’ best — the romance, the political stakes, and the food all finally operating at the same weight. Lee Chae-min’s performance here is the reason he won Best New Actor.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 11
EP 11
Before the Purge
September 27, 2025
The political net tightens and the show shifts register — this is no longer a food fantasy but a story about a man choosing who he wants to be when history has already written its verdict. Prince Je Seon makes his move. Kang Mok-ju overplays hers. Yi Heon’s breakdown scene is the episode’s most discussed moment — some found it unearned, others found it devastating. The split is real.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Episode 12
EP 12
The Final Meal
September 28, 2025
The finale hit 17.1% ratings — the highest the show ever reached — and divided its audience almost immediately. The ending is compressed and asks you to accept more than it explains. What it gets right: the show doesn’t pretend history can be rewritten, and Yi Heon’s final choice costs him something real. The last scene is happy in a way that earns its happiness without fully earning its logic. Most viewers forgave it anyway.

Lee Chae-min is the reason this drama worked at the scale it did. He was a last-minute replacement — Park Sung-hoon stepped down before filming — and he turned a liability into the story of the year. His King Yi Heon is not a redeemed villain in the usual K-drama sense: he’s a man who is still frightening, still volatile, whose cruelty has a specific target but spills onto everyone near him. The softening happens through food, through small private moments that Chae-min plays with a restraint that a more experienced actor might have overworked. The 10-year age gap with Lim Yoon-a was the most discussed casting concern before premiere. It stopped being relevant by episode two.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty (2025)

The show’s biggest structural debate is the four-episode Ming cook-off that dominates the middle. Defenders say it’s the show doing exactly what it promised — food as spectacle, food as politics, food as the thing that holds two unlikely people together while the world tries to separate them. Critics say it runs about two episodes longer than it needed to and let the romance stall at its most critical moment. Both are correct. The cook-off is visually the most ambitious section of the drama and narratively the most expendable. If you’re losing patience around episode 8, episode 10 is the payoff — stick with it.

The ending is the drama’s honest flaw and it doesn’t fully recover from it. The finale rushes a resolution that needed room to breathe, and it answers the central time-travel question with a shrug dressed up as mystery. For a show that spent twelve episodes arguing that food is how we say the things we can’t say, the finale is oddly silent about the most important things. What saves it: Yi Heon’s final choice is genuinely interesting, Lim Yoon-a carries the emotional weight of the last twenty minutes without excess, and the show earns its happy ending even if it doesn’t entirely explain it. Flawed, delicious, and impossible to fully dismiss.
