📖 The Story
No spoilers ahead — just enough to see if it fits your taste.
Kim Deok-hee is an ordinary woman who runs a laundromat. After a fire damages the shop she goes looking for a loan, and a call from a friendly-sounding bank offers her generous terms up front. She takes it right away, and only later realizes she has been caught in a voice phishing scheme.
The loss is heavy. She is out tens of thousands of dollars, her life is in a mess, and the police handling her case have effectively given up. The film is based on the true story of Kim Seong-ja, a laundromat owner in Hwaseong who helped catch the head of a voice phishing organization in 2016.
Then the phone rings again. The man who deceived her, Jae-min, is on the line, and this time he is not scamming her. He tells her he is being held by the criminal organization that employs him, and he passes on tips about how it works.
Deok-hee does not wait for the authorities. With her co-workers she decides to deal with the problem herself, and the trail leads abroad to the Chinese city of Qingdao, where the organization is based.
What follows is a comic heist-like pursuit with ordinary people in over their heads. A group of working women with no training and plenty of nerve set out to find a scam ring, rescue the man who cheated her and get her money back.
The tone stays warm even as the stakes rise. Deok-hee is stubborn, kind and impossible to talk out of it, and her colleagues follow her one decision at a time, from a local shop all the way across the sea.
The story keeps its focus on the question at its core: what does an everyday person do when the system will not help her. The answer the film gives is to act.
🏁 Ending Explained
Full spoilers from this point — what happened, and why.
Qingdao The turning point comes in Qingdao, where Deok-hee and her colleagues track down the location of the call center behind the scam. They hand what they find to the police, which is what the investigators had been unable to get to on their own.
Jae-min, the man who tricked her and later called to help, is a key part of how the group gets that far.
Justice for a small-time victim According to the summaries we could find, the head of the organization, Oh Myung-hwan, is arrested in the end and Deok-hee comes out on top. A few details of the finale are told differently in different summaries, so treat the finer points as unconfirmed.
The result is a satisfying one: a woman everyone else had written off ends up doing what the authorities could not.
What the ending means Citizen of a Kind ends on persistence rather than spectacle. Reports of the film’s final scenes are limited, so some details may differ from how other summaries tell them, but the core is clear: Deok-hee wins by refusing to give up.
✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take
Worth watching or not — our honest read, and who it’s for.
Citizen of a Kind works because it never loses sight of Deok-hee. Ra Mi-ran plays her as stubborn, kind and a little ridiculous, and the film trusts her to hold the screen. The crew of colleagues around her adds laughs without crowding her out.
The plot follows familiar crime-caper rhythms and the finish is tidy, but the true-story premise gives the jokes something real to push against.
It is an easy, good-hearted watch that rewards going in with little spoiled.
