Underdog Story

Kim Baek-du (Jang Dong-yoon) is a ssireum (Korean wrestling) player for the Geosan County Office team, which is on the verge of disbanding. Once called a prodigy for his outstanding skills, he now contemplates retirement after struggling to live up to his early promise. His life takes an unexpected turn when he reunites with his childhood friend Oh Yoo-kyung (Lee Ju-myoung), who joins the team as its new management leader — going by a different name and pretending not to know him.

Together with their tight circle of friends — including a new coach, a mysterious café owner, and Baek-du’s police officer best friend — the group rallies to save the team from disbandment while also unraveling a local mystery that connects all of them to a shared, unspoken past. Equal parts sports underdog story, slow-burn romance, and small-town whodunit, Like Flowers in Sand is a drama that finds beauty in ordinary lives and forgotten roots.

The mystery resolves through the people closest to them. Episode 11 exposed what the group had long circled without naming: the person responsible for the events that fractured their friendship twenty years ago was never an outsider. The finale picks up that thread and follows it to its source — someone Baek-du, Yoo-kyung, and Mi-ran all trusted. The reveal is quiet by thriller standards, but that restraint is intentional. This is a drama about small towns and long memories, and the damage that secrets do when they are kept too long among people who love each other.

Like Flowers in Sand (2023) Episode 11 — The Culprit Lives Among Us

Mi-ran’s danger forces the truth into the open. The climax centers on Mi-ran — the character who has carried the weight of the past most visibly throughout the series. Her life coming under threat is not a plot convenience: it is the consequence of being the one who remembered the most and stayed silent the longest. Her survival and the confrontation that follows finally closes the loop on what the five friends have been avoiding since they were children. The resolution gives the mystery arc its emotional payoff without leaning on dramatic courtroom machinery or action setpieces — it settles more like a reckoning among people who still care about each other.

Baek-du chooses wrestling — and chooses Yoo-kyung. The finale’s most satisfying emotional beat is the simplest one. Baek-du, who spent twelve episodes unsure whether ssireum was still his, decides to keep going. Not because he rediscovered his prodigy form, but because he rediscovered why it matters to him. His decision to continue parallels his feelings for Yoo-kyung: both were things he had to stop running from. The romance confirmation is earned rather than forced — two people who grew up together and grew apart, finally letting the distance close.

Like Flowers in Sand (2023) Episode 1 — Ssireum Prodigy, Kim Baek-du

The team survives, and Geosan gets its flowers back. The drama’s title earns its meaning in the closing minutes. Sand doesn’t seem like a place where things grow — yet here they are. The ssireum team, which looked finished from the first episode, finds a path forward. The community that felt frozen around old wounds begins to thaw. The beach flashback that opens the finale — all five friends, young and unburdened — casts a long light over everything that follows, asking us to measure what they lost against what they managed, against the odds, to preserve. Like Flowers in Sand argues that the most stubborn form of hope is the kind that grows in ordinary soil, in ordinary people who refuse to quit on the things and the people they love.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

🏅 Sports Underdog💛 Childhood Sweethearts🌾 Small-Town Warmth🕵️ Low-Stakes Mystery

Like Flowers in Sand works because it has an unusual confidence in its own smallness. Ssireum — Korean traditional wrestling — is not a sport that carries much global name recognition, and the drama leans into that obscurity rather than apologizing for it. The Geosan County team is unglamorous. Baek-du is not an exciting protagonist by K-drama standards: no chaebol backstory, no revenge motive, no sharp wit. He is simply a man who used to be good at something and is no longer sure he is. That plainness, handled by Jang Dong-yoon with effortless naturalism, becomes the drama’s greatest asset. You believe in him completely. Compared to the electric sports tension of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo or the nostalgic sweep of Twenty-Five Twenty-One, this drama is quieter in ambition but no less sincere.

Like Flowers in Sand (2023) — cinematic still

The mystery strand is where the drama gets most interesting and most imperfect. Structurally, weaving a small-town whodunit through a sports rom-com is an odd combination — and yet it mostly works because the mystery is never really about the crime. It is about what happens to a group of childhood friends when they carry something unresolved into adulthood. The drama is at its best when it treats the mystery as a vehicle for emotional archaeology rather than plot mechanics. Where it wobbles is in its later episodes, where pacing becomes uneven and the mystery beats occasionally feel rushed into a drama that wants to breathe. But these are minor complaints against an ensemble that earns its warmth organically.

What stays with you after the finale is the texture of the world this drama builds: the smell of sand, the quiet of a county gymnasium after practice, the kind of loyalty that runs between people who grew up on the same streets. It is a drama that asks you to slow down, and rewards you generously for doing so. Like Flowers in Sand is not the kind of drama that overwhelms — it is the kind that settles in, and lingers.
