Campus Romance Coming-of-Age Police Academy First Love Corruption Thriller Ensemble Cast

Wi Seung-hyun (Kang Daniel) arrives at the Korean National Police University as an honors freshman with a carefully mapped future — following in his high-ranking police commissioner father’s footsteps. That plan derails the moment he meets Go Eun-kang (Chae Soo-bin), an impulsive, spirited girl who enrolled at KNPU to chase an unrequited love. Together they navigate grueling training, campus hierarchy, and a strictly forbidden romance.

Beneath the campus camaraderie and first-love energy, a darker thread quietly builds — a cold case murder, a powerful CEO’s criminal network, and a corruption that runs all the way to the top of the institution they’re training to join. Rookie Cops is sweeter than it sounds, and more gripping than you’d expect.

📺 Episode Guide

Spoiler-light recaps — enough to remember where you left off, nothing that ruins the ride.

Rookie Cops Episode 1 — First Day at KNPU
EP 01
First Day at KNPU
January 26, 2022
A cold open ten years in the past sets a darker tone than this drama initially promises — a young man, Kim Hyun-soo, is beaten and killed. Then we land in 2017: Wi Seung-hyun arrives at KNPU as the model freshman, and immediately becomes entangled with Go Eun-kang — the same girl from an awkward pre-campus encounter — when a senior trainer’s brutal hazing forces a new recruit out and Eun-kang in. An energetic, well-paced opener that tells you exactly what kind of show this wants to be.

Rookie Cops Episode 2 — The Hidden Camera
EP 02
The Hidden Camera
January 26, 2022
A USB drive falls from Eun-kang’s jacket during restricted training, and senior Um Hyuk immediately moves to expel her for allegedly filming in prohibited areas. With her future at KNPU suddenly on the line, she turns to the one person she hasn’t exactly made friends with — Wi Seung-hyun — and together they begin digging for the real culprit. The campus investigation dynamic that will carry the show’s lighter half clicks into place here.

Rookie Cops Episode 3 — The Protest
EP 03
The Protest
February 2, 2022
The culprit is revealed to be Gi Han-na — Eun-kang’s own roommate, and the episode digs into her surprising backstory: a former bullying victim manipulated by an outside detective. At the disciplinary hearing, Han-na’s threat to expose KNPU’s brutal training methods forces the dean’s hand. The episode ends on a genuinely rousing beat: Seung-hyun leads a campus-wide protest that abolishes the abusive Cheongram Education program, and the freshmen are finally welcomed as full students.

Rookie Cops Episode 4 — Street Chase
EP 04
Street Chase
February 9, 2022
Eun-kang discovers that her first love Jang Ju-chan already has a girlfriend, and nearly quits KNPU altogether. A spontaneous street chase — Seung-hyun and Eun-kang working together to catch a purse thief — is the show’s first properly fun action beat, and it reignites her passion for staying. The flashback revealing how Gi Han-na was manipulated is quietly devastating, and begins threading the external corruption storyline into the campus drama proper.

Rookie Cops Episode 5 — Blackmail
EP 05
Blackmail
February 16, 2022
Eun-kang joins a group blind date while Seung-hyun and Kim Tak intervene in a billiard hall bullying incident — which gets secretly filmed. When Seung-hyun catches senior Pyo Hyun-seok cheating on an exam and demands he turn himself in, Pyo retaliates by using the billiard hall footage as blackmail. The show starts stacking its mini-conflict layers here, and Kim Tak’s character begins to emerge as the ensemble’s most quietly compelling presence.

Rookie Cops Episode 6 — Truth Out
EP 06
Truth Out
February 16, 2022
The fabricated billiard hall video goes up on KNPU’s web portal, and the victim initially confirms the false story to protect himself and his brother. The resolution — Seung-hyun writing a heartfelt note that moves the victim to come forward — is the kind of earnest beat this drama does well. Gi Han-na’s anonymous tip that helps crack the cheating case signals that her loyalty is slowly shifting, even if she’d never admit it.

Rookie Cops Episode 7 — Cheongram Sports Day
EP 07
Cheongram Sports Day
February 23, 2022
KNPU’s Cheongram Sports Day preparations bring the romantic geometry to a head — Seung-hyun is paired with Han-na for training, Kim Tak steps in to free him up, and Eun-kang quietly watches it all unfold. Commissioner Wi Gi-yong’s speech at the school and Seung-hyun’s public challenge to his own father is the first real crack in the daddy-issues subplot that will pay off in the finale. Warm, busy, and effectively paced.

Rookie Cops Episode 8 — The First Kiss
EP 08
The First Kiss
February 23, 2022
The Sports Day triathlon delivers the show’s most emotionally satisfying moment: Eun-kang re-injures herself mid-race and can’t finish, and Gi Han-na — her former adversary — carries her all the way to the finish line. The pivot in their friendship lands harder than expected. Then, at the event’s close, Seung-hyun pulls Eun-kang into a phone booth and they confess and share their first kiss. A quietly perfect episode for the show’s genre.

Rookie Cops Episode 9 — Secret Couple
EP 09
Secret Couple
March 2, 2022
KNPU’s no-dating rule makes what should be a simple relationship surprisingly suspenseful. Seung-hyun gets drunk at a senior birthday outing, misses his plans with Eun-kang, and makes it up by arriving at her home with dinner — a warm, unguarded scene that’s Kang Daniel at his most relaxed. The accidental run-in with the fraud investigation crew kicks off the field training arc that will carry the show into its more serious second half.

Rookie Cops Episode 10 — Field Training
EP 10
Field Training
March 2, 2022
Summer vacation sends freshmen to field training at police substations — Seung-hyun, Kim Tak, and Eun-kang all land in the same Cheongju division. Eun-kang’s detective instincts kick in when Lee Se-hyun, the fraud victim from the previous episode, goes missing. Surveillance footage, a kidnapping, a larger criminal scheme — the trio dismantles it together and earns a Certificate of Commendation. This is where the show fully commits to its blend of youth drama and actual police work.

Rookie Cops Episode 11 — Shadows at the Top
EP 11
Shadows at the Top
March 9, 2022
Field training continues, but the thriller thread can no longer stay in the background. Detective Kang Nam-gi’s investigation into Kim Hyun-soo’s cold case murder starts colliding directly with powerful forces at the top of the police institution. The connections to wealthy CEO Jo Han-sol and his chief of staff Shin Eui-seok emerge clearly for the first time. The show’s two tones — warm campus romance and institutional corruption thriller — are now fully in the same frame.

Rookie Cops Episode 12 — Trust Issues
EP 12
Trust Issues
March 9, 2022
Key evidence linking Jo Han-sol to Kim Hyun-soo’s death begins surfacing, and Seung-hyun’s growing suspicion about corruption within KNPU puts him on a collision course with his own father. Meanwhile, Gi Han-na and Kim Tak’s close friendship edges toward something deeper — and the squad pulls tighter as the external threat escalates. The tone has shifted enough that the romantic beats now carry weight they didn’t have in the show’s lighter first half.

Rookie Cops Episode 13 — Entangled
EP 13
Entangled
March 9, 2022
Jo Han-sol invites Kim Tak to meet privately and reveals information about his older brother Kim Hyun-soo’s death — deliberately dragging Kim Tak into the conspiracy’s center. The personal stakes go from abstract to visceral. Then Yoo Dae-il suffers a critical and tragic fate that shocks the entire squad. The show earns a tonal shift here that few campus dramas would risk, and it’s the better for it.

Rookie Cops Episode 14 — The Laptop
EP 14
The Laptop
March 9, 2022
Grief and momentum run in parallel. The squad processes Dae-il’s death while simultaneously uncovering the corruption network’s full shape. At the center of the episode: a laptop containing critical evidence, and Seung-hyun’s agonizing choice about whether to hand it to his father — whose own complicity is increasingly unclear. Eun-kang pushes him to do it. He hesitates. The fracture between institutional trust and personal loyalty is where this drama gets its most interesting writing.

Rookie Cops Episode 15 — Direct Confrontation
EP 15
Direct Confrontation
March 16, 2022
The evidence is undeniable, the students resolve to act without waiting for institutional backing, and Seung-hyun does something reckless and principled in equal measure: he walks up to Jo Han-sol and tells him, directly, that he will see him brought to justice. It’s a teenage move in the best sense — unguarded and moral in a way that only works because Kang Daniel plays it completely straight. Kim Tak moves toward his personal reckoning, and Detective Nam-gi scrambles to get official support in place before everything breaks.

Rookie Cops Episode 16 — Final
EP 16 · Final
Justice, Together
March 16, 2022
The squad doesn’t wait for the adults. A coordinated plan brings Chu Man-seok — the hitman behind Kim Hyun-soo’s death — down in a high-adrenaline action sequence, and Jo Han-sol’s network collapses through the combined work of the students and Detective Nam-gi. Jo Han-sol is arrested. Seung-hyun and his father share the drama’s most emotionally grounded scene — a reconciliation built on honesty rather than easy sentiment. The no-dating rule falls away, Eun-kang and Seung-hyun are finally open, and the squad looks ahead, bonded by loss and growth. A finale that earns its warmth.

🏁 Ending Explained

⚠️
Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of Rookie Cops. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

The Students Take Matters Into Their Own Hands. By Episode 16, it’s clear that waiting for the institution to act is not an option — too many of the people in authority are compromised, complicit, or simply too slow. Seung-hyun, Kim Tak, and the squad put together a coordinated plan themselves, working alongside Detective Kang Nam-gi. Their target: Chu Man-seok, the hitman responsible for killing Kim Hyun-soo a decade earlier, and Jo Han-sol’s entire criminal network that has been operating with police protection. The show commits fully to letting these freshmen be the ones who break the case open — which is both the drama’s most idealistic and most satisfying choice.

Rookie Cops (2022) Episode 15 — The Plan Takes Shape

Justice for Kim Tak — and for Kim Hyun-soo. The apprehension of Chu Man-seok is the finale’s action centrepiece, and it’s earned because we’ve understood what it means to Kim Tak all along. His older brother’s murder was the cold case thread the entire drama was building toward — a death that went unseen and unpunished for ten years because the people with the power to investigate it were the same people who benefited from burying it. When Man-seok is taken into custody and Jo Han-sol is finally arrested, it’s not triumphant in the blockbuster sense. It’s quieter, and more satisfying for it.

Rookie Cops (2022) Episode 11 — The Conspiracy Surfaces

Wi Seung-hyun and His Father. The final emotional resolution belongs to Seung-hyun and Commissioner Wi Gi-yong — the fractured father-son relationship that has been humming under the surface since Episode 7. The finale’s most nuanced acting from Kang Daniel comes here: not a tearful explosion, but a quiet, adult conversation in which both men acknowledge what they got wrong. The commissioner was neither fully corrupt nor fully innocent — and the show wisely refuses to let the scene become either a celebration or a condemnation. It’s the resolution this subplot actually deserved.

Eun-kang, Seung-hyun, and the Squad. The no-dating policy tension evaporates in the finale’s warm closing stretch. Eun-kang and Seung-hyun are openly together. The squad gathers — minus Yoo Dae-il, whose absence is felt without being dwelt upon — and looks ahead. The series closes on a note of genuine bittersweet hope: honoring the cost of everything they’ve been through, while refusing to let grief be the final word. A youth drama that knew when to grow up.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

💕 First Love Energy
🎓 Campus Camaraderie
🔍 Corruption Thriller
👮 Police Academy Life
😢 Real Stakes, Real Loss

The case against Rookie Cops writes itself: a 16-episode Disney+ original built around a K-pop idol in his first lead role, set at a police academy that conveniently keeps every episode conflict contained to campus. If that’s your read, you’ll check out around Episode 5. But here’s the thing — this show is better than it has any right to be, and it earns that assessment in the second half.

Rookie Cops (2022) — Kang Daniel and Chae Soo-bin lead performance

Kang Daniel is a genuine surprise. Not because he’s a revelation as an actor — he isn’t — but because he’s natural in a way that idol-turned-actor debuts rarely are. Wi Seung-hyun is principled and a little stiff, which happens to match Kang Daniel’s actual screen presence, and the result is a character who feels consistent rather than performed. His best work comes in the quieter moments: the drunk scene in Episode 9, the confrontation with his father in the finale. These aren’t showy scenes. They work because he doesn’t oversell them.

The real engine, though, is Chae Soo-bin. She takes what could easily be the spunky-girl-who-softens-the-uptight-boy role and makes Go Eun-kang a person you’d actually like to know — curious, impulsive in a way that comes from genuine feeling rather than narrative convenience, and capable of driving the plot herself. Her partnership with Park You-na’s Gi Han-na is the show’s best relationship, and the Sports Day moment in Episode 8 where Han-na carries Eun-kang to the finish line is worth the price of admission alone. Compare this to Twenty-Five Twenty-One (2022), where the female lead’s drive and the female friendship are equally central — Rookie Cops operates in the same emotional register, if at a lower altitude.

The corruption thriller thread — the cold case murder of Kim Hyun-soo, the CEO Jo Han-sol, the police complicity — lands harder than you’d expect from a drama that spent its first four episodes on hazing, blind dates, and a USB drive. By Episode 13, when Yoo Dae-il dies and the tone shifts irrevocably, the show has quietly built enough stakes to make the loss land. It’s not Duty After School (2023) — the darkness here is measured rather than relentless — but the willingness to cost the characters something real separates Rookie Cops from the campus fluff it superficially resembles.

Where the show struggles is the stretch between Episodes 10 and 12, where the thriller plot is gathering momentum but the campus romance arcs are spinning their wheels. Some supporting characters — Woo Joo-young, Seo Bum-ju — feel perpetually on the edge of meaningful storylines that never fully arrive. And at 16 episodes, there’s a sense that the writers were padding to fill the runtime rather than trimming to sharpen the story. Tighter would have been better. But the finale sticks the landing cleanly — the father-son reconciliation, the squad’s earned camaraderie, the absence of Yoo Dae-il acknowledged without being milked — and that counts for more than a few slack middle episodes.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Chae Soo-bin anchors the show with warmth and genuine drive
Kang Daniel — natural, consistent, best when the script is quiet
The Eun-kang / Han-na friendship earns its emotional payoff
Corruption thriller lands harder than you’d expect from the premise

What to know first
Episodes 10–12 lose momentum before the thriller arc kicks in
Several supporting characters underdeveloped for 16 episodes
Tone shifts between genres don’t always land smoothly

7.6 / 10Sweeter than it looks, grittier than you expect — and Chae Soo-bin makes every episode worth showing up for.
