Kim Taek-rok is three weeks from a quiet retirement when a phone call turns his life inside out. The caller, identifying himself only as ‘a friend,’ proves within minutes that this isn’t a prank — and by the next episode, Taek-rok is framed for a murder he didn’t commit, forced to reopen cases from decades on the force to find the one mistake that made him a target.

What unfolds is less a whodunit than a slow unmasking of exactly how far institutional rot reaches, with Taek-rok forced to distrust every colleague who could plausibly be pulling the strings. Shadow Detective (형사록) — released internationally as a Disney+ Korea original — spends its eight episodes proving that the person threatening you can be a victim too, and that knowing that doesn’t make the threat any less real.

📺 Episode Guide

Just enough to stay oriented, episode by episode.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) Episode 1 — The Call That Wasn't a Prank EP 01
The Call That Wasn’t a Prank
Oct 26, 2022
Kim Taek-rok, a homicide detective counting down the days to retirement, picks up what looks like a prank call — until the voice on the other end says something specific enough to prove it isn’t one. The caller identifies himself only as ‘a friend,’ and by the end of the hour Taek-rok’s quiet exit from the force stops being a plan and starts being a problem he can’t outrun.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) Episode 2 — Framed EP 02
Framed
Oct 26, 2022
The threat becomes real fast: Taek-rok is framed for a murder he didn’t commit and dragged into interrogation as the prime suspect, the case built so cleanly against him that even his own colleagues start to hesitate. Cornered, he starts digging through his own closed cases from decades on the job, looking for the one he got wrong badly enough to earn this kind of enemy.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) Episode 3 — The Mistake EP 03
The Mistake
Nov 2, 2022
Taek-rok finally identifies the old case at the center of it all — a mistake buried deep enough that he’d convinced himself it didn’t matter anymore. The caller isn’t done extracting value from him yet, issuing new orders that pull Taek-rok back into active investigation under someone else’s control, and the paranoia spreads fast: by the end of the episode, everyone in his orbit reads like a suspect.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) Episode 4 — A Name for the Blackmailer EP 04
A Name for the Blackmailer
Nov 2, 2022
Running low on people he trusts, Taek-rok hands off what he knows about the blackmailer to Jin-han, a colleague sharp enough to actually be useful — and gets back a real clue about who ‘the friend’ might be. It’s the first genuine progress since the calls started, and it lands with an unspoken irony the audience can feel building well before Taek-rok can.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) Episode 5 — Not the Target EP 05
Not the Target
Nov 9, 2022
Lee Seong-a and Son Gyeong-chan finally step off the sidelines and commit to helping Taek-rok clear his name, giving him allies he badly needed. The bigger break comes from Taek-rok himself: the blackmailer was never actually after him specifically — he’s a tool being pointed at someone else entirely, which reframes every order the caller has given so far.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) Episode 6 — The Man Who Resisted EP 06
The Man Who Resisted
Nov 9, 2022
The search for answers finally has a body attached to it: Taek-rok tracks down a man holding the key piece of the truth, only to have him fight back rather than talk. The chase plays as the season’s most physical set piece so far, but it’s also confirmation that whoever’s protecting this secret is willing to make it violent.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) Episode 7 — The Burner Phone EP 07
The Burner Phone
Nov 16, 2022
Woo Hyeon-seok, it turns out, filmed his own murder before it happened to him — and the footage sits waiting on a burner phone Taek-rok finally manages to unlock. What’s on it is undeniable: Jin-han, the colleague Taek-rok trusted enough to hand his evidence to, killing Hyeon-seok in cold blood. Taek-rok uses the recording to lure Jin-han out into the open, even as the walls close in around his own fugitive status.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) Episode 8 — The Friend EP 08
The Friend
Nov 16, 2022
The confrontation reveals everything: Jin-han is ‘the friend,’ blackmailed into the entire scheme years earlier when Chairman Jang threatened his critically ill son’s life. Taek-rok, recognizing exactly how thoroughly Jin-han had been used, lets him walk rather than arrest him — and a sniper’s bullet meant to clean up loose ends ends the choice for good. Former chief Seo Gwang-su turns himself in with evidence that finally reaches the press.

🏁 Ending Explained

Spoiler territory from here — the finale, fully unpacked.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of Shadow Detective (Season 1). Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

Who ‘the friend’ really is The voice threatening Taek-rok all season belongs to Kook Jin-han — not a criminal mastermind, but a fellow detective blackmailed years earlier when Chairman Jang, the true power behind Geumo’s redevelopment corruption, threatened the life of Jin-han’s critically ill son. Jang’s price for saving the boy was Jin-han’s total cooperation: dig up dirt, eliminate loose ends, and above all, take down Chief Seo Gwang-su before Gwang-su could expose the ties between the police force and the development committee.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) (2022) — Kook Jin-han is revealed as 'the friend' behind Taek-rok's blackmail in Shadow Detective

When Taek-rok finally corners Jin-han with hard proof — the burner-phone footage of Jin-han killing Hyeon-seok — he doesn’t arrest him. He’s spent the whole season learning exactly how thoroughly Jin-han was used, and lets him walk instead. It doesn’t matter: a sniper’s bullet, almost certainly ordered by Jang to erase the last loose end, ends the confrontation before Taek-rok’s mercy can mean anything.

What happens to everyone else Chief Seo Gwang-su turns himself in and hands over evidence that finally makes it to the press, admitting his own role in the corruption he’d spent years protecting. Lee Seong-a is arrested for harboring Taek-rok while he was a fugitive. Woo Hyeon-seok is already dead by this point — his own recorded murder is the single piece of evidence that unravels the entire conspiracy.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) (2022) — Chief Seo Gwang-su turns himself in with evidence of the corruption in Shadow Detective's finale

Chairman Jang, the actual architect of everything Taek-rok has survived, never appears in a room where any of this consequence lands. It’s a deliberately unsatisfying note to end a season on, and it’s the point: the people who pull the strings almost never show up to answer for it, which is exactly why Season 2 exists.

The KDW verdict Shadow Detective’s first season works because it never confuses its blackmailer for its actual villain — Jin-han’s arc lands as tragedy, not twist, and that distinction is what makes Taek-rok’s decision to let him go feel earned instead of soft. Eight episodes is a tight runtime for this much plot, and the show mostly uses every one of them well.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

📞 The Call That Changes Everything 🕵️ One Detective, No Allies ⚖️ Power Above the Law 🎭 Sympathy for the Devil

A single phone call turns a detective three weeks from retirement into a murder suspect, and Shadow Detective spends the rest of its eight episodes making sure that’s not a twist — it’s the premise. Through the Darkness proved a slow, procedural thriller could carry real dread without raising its voice; this show borrows that same restraint and adds a blackmailer who knows exactly which of Taek-rok’s old cases will hurt the most.

Shadow Detective (Season 1) (2022) — cinematic still

The blackmailer isn’t a criminal mastermind so much as another cornered civil servant, and that’s the detail the season keeps circling back to — Jin-han’s crimes trace back to a sick child and a chairman willing to use that as leverage, the same institutional rot Beyond Evil spent sixteen episodes exposing one layer at a time. Shadow Detective just compresses it into eight.

Lee Sung-min plays Taek-rok’s exhaustion as its own kind of investigative tool — he’s stopped being surprised by what people do under pressure, which is exactly why he can still read Jin-han correctly when it matters most. Letting the season’s antagonist walk instead of arresting him isn’t mercy so much as recognition, and it’s the choice that keeps the finale from feeling like a clean win.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
📞 Viewers who want their mystery to start with the premise, not build to it 🕵️ Fans of solo-detective thrillers where trust is the scarcest resource ⚖️ Anyone who prefers a blackmailer with a reason over a cartoon villain

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Lee Sung-min carries the whole season on a performance built from exhaustion, not heroics
The blackmail structure gives every episode a clear reason to exist instead of padding
Jin-han’s motive lands as tragic rather than convenient

What to know first
Eight episodes move fast — expect a proper Season 2 hook, not full closure
Chairman Jang, the true villain, stays largely off-screen this season
Heavy on interrogation-room and phone-call scenes over action

8.0 / 10— A tightly wound blackmail thriller that trusts its lead actor’s stillness more than any twist, and earns that trust by the finale.
