The Purgatory: The Kill Zone
🎬 Film Overview
In a near-future South Korea shaken by economic collapse, a new authoritarian government passes the “Permanent Exile Law” and ships death-row inmates to the Purgatory, a detention center built inside abandoned nuclear power plants. The prisoners are given room to govern themselves, and over time the place slips completely out of the state’s reach. Yu-seong (Bruce Khan) is a former police officer who ended up on death row after taking revenge for his wife and daughter. The director of the NIS offers him a deal: eliminate the Purgatory’s boss, the ruler of the zone, and a pardon becomes possible. Korean press describes what follows as a run of fights that climb upward like levels in a role-playing game, with an emphasis on exhaustion and pain over polish. Khan also wrote the film, designed the action and co-directed it with Lee Hyun-myeong.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take
Our real opinion — worth the watch, and for who exactly.
The pitch is easy to repeat: send a condemned man into a prison no one governs and tell him to kill the ruler. Viewers who like Korean action built around a hard mission and a ticking clock, as in Hunt will recognize the appeal, although this film trades spy-thriller twists for brawling.
What sets it apart is how it was made. Khan wrote the script in about three weeks after a larger project fell through, then shot in an abandoned industrial complex in Mungyeong during a brutal winter, with the final duel filmed on the coldest day. He tore a thigh muscle on the last day of shooting. If you want another story about people forced to fight their way up through a closed system, Squid Game is the obvious companion, though it is far more polished.
We are holding back a verdict for now. Post-release coverage is thin, and we only publish the story and ending sections once they hold up across several reliable sources. For now, treat this page as the setup, the cast and the case for watching.
