Goryeo DynastyMongol InvasionWar EpicForbidden LovePolitical Marriage

Thirty years of losing to the Mongol Empire has left Goryeo with almost nothing left to bargain with by 1258 — so when word spreads that the Gwaneum Bochu, a jewel believed to carry the power to protect the entire nation, can still be recovered, the kingdom sends the closest thing it has to expendable heroes after it. Special commander Baek-gyeol (Ahn Bo-hyun) leads that expedition alongside Choi Gu (Lee Sung-min), the battle-hardened head of the elite Yabyeolcho unit, and Geol-seung (Ha Yoon-kyung), a Ganghwa Island tavern keeper who knows the terrain better than either soldier does.

Waiting on the other side of that mission is Princess Wang-hee (Claudia Kim), the emperor’s youngest daughter, who has spent years inside Gyeonghwa Palace keeping her feelings as sealed off as the palace gates — a political marriage and a private loss saw to that. Baek-gyeol is the first person in years to crack that shell, which complicates things considerably given that Wang-mu (Yoon Kyun-sang), the fortress commander she once loved, is fighting the same war from a different front. Sacred Jewel marks Ahn Bo-hyun’s first sageuk lead — director Jung Dae-yoon (Reborn Rich, W) and writer Jung Hyun-min (The Nokdu Flower, Assembly) are betting a JTBC weekend slot on a war epic that’s as interested in who survives it as in what they’re fighting for.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Here’s our honest verdict, and who’s going to love it.

⚔️ Mongol Invasion Epic 💍 A Love Interrupted by War 🛡️ Sageuk Debut 🏹 Expedition Against the Odds

Ahn Bo-hyun spent years playing modern soldiers and chaebols before ever putting on Goryeo armor, and Sacred Jewel is betting his first sageuk lead can carry a war epic built around a relic hunt instead of a palace coup. That’s a real gamble — Goryeo’s wars with the Mongols have produced some of Korean television’s bleakest history (Empress Ki spent 51 episodes on the same occupation-era desperation), and JTBC is reportedly pouring a large production budget into making Baek-gyeol’s expedition feel like it. Whether Ahn Bo-hyun can anchor an entire sageuk the way he’s anchored contemporary leads is the first real question the premiere has to answer.

Sacred Jewel (2026) — cinematic still

Claudia Kim’s Wang-hee is the more interesting bet on paper — a princess who’s already survived a political marriage and doesn’t especially want to feel anything again, which is exactly the kind of character who tends to wreck a slow-burn romance in the best way. That she’s caught between Baek-gyeol and Wang-mu (Yoon Kyun-sang), the fortress commander she loved before duty separated them, echoes the doomed-love-during-wartime shape My Dearest used to devastating effect — the difference here is that Sacred Jewel has to balance that triangle against an actual relic-hunt plot instead of letting the war stay mostly in the background.

Director Jung Dae-yoon comes off Reborn Rich’s 26.9% rating high, and writer Jung Hyun-min’s resume (The Nokdu Flower, Assembly) is serious historical-political drama rather than romance — which suggests Sacred Jewel will lean harder into the war and court politics than the marketing’s love-triangle framing implies. Whether a JTBC weekend slot and a reportedly expensive production can turn a 13th-century relic hunt into appointment viewing is exactly what December will decide.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
⚔️ Sageuk fans who want a war epic instead of another palace coup 💔 Anyone drawn to doomed wartime love triangles with real political stakes 🎬 Viewers curious how Reborn Rich’s director handles 13th-century Goryeo

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Ahn Bo-hyun, Lee Sung-min, and Claudia Kim give the expedition a genuinely stacked headline cast
Director Jung Dae-yoon’s Reborn Rich pedigree suggests real production ambition behind the war epic
Writer Jung Hyun-min’s historical-political track record hints at more than a surface-level sageuk romance

What to know first
Anticipation Pick — no episodes have aired yet, so the pacing between the war plot and the romance is still unknown
Ahn Bo-hyun’s first sageuk lead is unproven territory for an actor built on modern roles
A reported large production budget raises expectations the drama still has to earn once it airs

Anticipation Pick— A stacked-cast war epic betting a JTBC weekend slot on whether a relic hunt across occupied Goryeo can carry as much weight as the romance wrapped around it.
