First Love

Seon Woo-hyeol (Ok Taec-yeon) is a vampire with one desperate wish: to become fully human and finally experience heart-pounding love. To make it happen, he climbs into a coffin and sleeps for what’s supposed to be exactly 100 years — only to be woken up a single day early by Joo In-hae (Won Ji-an), a part-time school nurse who runs a small guesthouse and has zero patience for romance, vampires, or anything that disrupts her carefully guarded routine. The result: Woo-hyeol is stuck as a half-vampire, half-human, and the only way to finish the job is to stay close to the woman who interrupted his century-long nap.

What follows is a cohabitation rom-com with a supernatural twist. In-hae, hardened by a difficult childhood and a lifetime of fending for herself, slowly finds her defenses worn down by Woo-hyeol’s relentless warmth and goofy charm. Around them, a small seaside neighborhood full of eccentric vampires, nosy neighbors, and old grudges complicates everything — including a love triangle involving Hae-won, the lookalike of Woo-hyeol’s first love from centuries ago. The show plays its early episodes for cozy, low-stakes comedy before pivoting into heavier territory about mortality, sacrifice, and what it really costs to love someone when your time is running out.

📺 Episode Guide

Spoiler-light recaps — enough to remember where you left off, nothing that ruins the ride.

Heartbeat Episode 1 — A Day Too Soon
EP 01
A Day Too Soon
June 26, 2023
Woo-hyeol’s 100-year sleep is meant to end in one final, human heartbeat — and then In-hae stumbles onto his coffin a day early and ruins everything. Stuck half-vampire, half-human, he has no choice but to follow the woman responsible back to her sleepy seaside town. The setup is goofy and charming, and Ok Taec-yeon sells the fish-out-of-water comedy immediately.

Heartbeat Episode 2 — The Unwanted Houseguest
EP 02
The Unwanted Houseguest
June 27, 2023
In-hae wants nothing to do with Woo-hyeol, but circumstance — and his sheer persistence — land him a room at her guesthouse anyway. The episode leans into broad cohabitation comedy while quietly setting up why In-hae keeps everyone, vampire or otherwise, at arm’s length.

Heartbeat Episode 3 — Small Town, Big Secrets
EP 03
Small Town, Big Secrets
July 3, 2023
More of the town’s residents turn out to be vampires than anyone bargained for, and Woo-hyeol’s arrival starts shaking loose old tensions that have been buried for years. Shin Do-sik, In-hae’s wary childhood friend, starts to suspect there’s more to the new guesthouse tenant than meets the eye.

Heartbeat Episode 4 — A Crack in the Armor
EP 04
A Crack in the Armor
July 4, 2023
Woo-hyeol’s relentless warmth starts to wear down In-hae’s defenses, one small, unexpected kindness at a time. The episode does a good job of making the slow thaw feel earned rather than instant, even as the comedy stays front and center.

Heartbeat Episode 5 — Hae-won Arrives
EP 05
Hae-won Arrives
July 10, 2023
Na Hae-won shows up — and her uncanny resemblance to Woo-hyeol’s centuries-old first love throws his slow-building feelings for In-hae into chaos. Yoon So-hee’s introduction adds a love-triangle wrinkle that the show will lean on for the rest of its run.

Heartbeat Episode 6 — Old Wounds
EP 06
Old Wounds
July 11, 2023
In-hae’s painful childhood gets more screen time, explaining exactly why she’s spent her whole life building walls. Meanwhile, the town’s vampire underworld — led by the menacing Ri Man-hwi — starts circling closer to Woo-hyeol than he realizes.

Heartbeat Episode 7 — The Confession That Wasn't
EP 07
The Confession That Wasn’t
July 17, 2023
Woo-hyeol comes close to telling In-hae how he really feels, only for the moment to slip away — a near-miss the show repeats a few too many times across the season. Still, the chemistry between the two leads is at its strongest here.

Heartbeat Episode 8 — Do-sik's Condition
EP 08
Do-sik’s Condition
July 18, 2023
A health crisis reveals that Do-sik needs a half-vampire’s blood to survive — and Woo-hyeol is the only one who fits the bill. The reveal complicates the love triangle further and gives Park Kang-hyun’s character real stakes beyond comic relief.

Heartbeat Episode 9 — What Hae-sun Left Behind
EP 09
What Hae-sun Left Behind
July 24, 2023
Flashbacks fill in the tragic story of Woo-hyeol’s first love, Hae-sun, and the promise that started his whole quest to become human. It recontextualizes his pursuit of In-hae as something heavier than a rom-com crush, and the tonal shift here is the show’s first real signal of where the back half is headed.

Heartbeat Episode 10 — Saying It Out Loud
EP 10
Saying It Out Loud
July 25, 2023
Woo-hyeol and In-hae finally admit their feelings for each other, giving the show its sweetest, most satisfying romantic beat. The catch: becoming fully human requires In-hae’s blood, something she’s reluctant to give — a quiet ticking clock the episode plants without making too much noise about it yet.

Heartbeat Episode 11 — The Price of Information
EP 11
The Price of Information
July 31, 2023
Ri Man-hwi inserts himself further into the town’s drama, trading secrets for leverage and stirring up trouble between Hae-won and Do-sik. The comedy thins out noticeably here as the show’s darker vampire-lore threads start tightening.

Heartbeat Episode 12 — Exposed
EP 12
Exposed
August 1, 2023
Hae-won lets the truth about Woo-hyeol slip to the wrong people, and the close-knit town’s tolerance curdles into fear and suspicion almost overnight. The fallout puts real pressure on In-hae and Woo-hyeol’s relationship for the first time.

Heartbeat Episode 13 — Running Out of Time
EP 13
Running Out of Time
August 7, 2023
Woo-hyeol’s condition worsens, and it becomes clear his half-vampire body can’t sustain itself indefinitely. The episode shifts the show’s center of gravity fully into melodrama, trading the early comedy for a much heavier mood.

Heartbeat Episode 14 — The Truth About Do-sik
EP 14
The Truth About Do-sik
August 8, 2023
Do-sik’s own failing health forces a reckoning, and his complicated rivalry-turned-respect for Woo-hyeol takes center stage. Ri Man-hwi’s manipulations escalate, setting pieces in motion for the finale’s confrontations.

Heartbeat Episode 15 — One More Day
EP 15
One More Day
August 14, 2023
Knowing his time is short, Woo-hyeol quietly starts saying goodbye to the people he’s grown to love — without telling In-hae what’s really happening. It’s the show’s most emotionally direct episode, leaning fully into the bittersweet tone of the finale to come.

Heartbeat Episode 16 — Until His Heart Stopped
EP 16
Until His Heart Stopped
August 15, 2023
The finale brings every loose thread to a head — Ri Man-hwi’s schemes, Do-sik’s failing health, and Woo-hyeol’s accepted fate all collide before the credits roll. It’s a finale that prioritizes emotional closure over a tidy resolution, and not every viewer will be satisfied with where it lands.

🏁 Ending Explained

Full spoilers ahead — everything that happens in the finale and what it all means.

⚠️
Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of Heartbeat. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

Woo-hyeol Accepts His Fate. By the finale, it’s clear Woo-hyeol’s half-vampire body is failing and he’s going to die. He’s quietly made peace with it: even without fully becoming human, he got to feel his heart pound with real love for In-hae, and that was the entire point of the last hundred years. Rather than fight for more time, he focuses on protecting the people around him — including Do-sik, whose own health is collapsing because he needs a half-vampire’s blood to survive.

Heartbeat (2023) finale — Woo-hyeol and In-hae

The Sacrifice. Woo-hyeol asks Do-sik to drink his blood and finish the job before the lunar eclipse passes — a final act that would let Do-sik live on and watch over In-hae after he’s gone. Do-sik, who has spent the whole show distrusting Woo-hyeol, finally believes he’s exactly the good person In-hae always insisted he was. In-hae arrives just as Do-sik raises the dagger, and the moment becomes the emotional core of the entire episode: a death chosen out of love rather than one inflicted by a villain.

Ri Man-hwi’s End. The vampire schemer Ri Man-hwi, who spent the back half of the season manipulating everyone for leverage, meets his own end when he tries to shake down Hae-won for payment and attacks her. Do-sik intervenes and stabs him with the same special dagger meant for Woo-hyeol — and it turns out the blade works on full vampires too. Man-hwi’s body turns to ash, closing out the show’s one true antagonist with little fanfare, which is in keeping with how the finale prioritizes the central love story over plot mechanics.

Heartbeat (2023) finale — Ri Man-hwi confrontation

In-hae’s Choice. With Woo-hyeol fading, In-hae tries to give him her blood to save him, but it doesn’t work — his fate was already sealed. In one of the show’s most quietly devastating scenes, the two share a final, ordinary day together before he passes, the show resisting any last-minute miracle cure in favor of letting the relationship end the way it was always going to.

An Open, Bittersweet Goodbye. In the final scene, In-hae returns to Shaded Oasis, the resting place tied to Woo-hyeol’s long sleep, and looks up to see him standing there, smiling at her. Whether this is real or simply In-hae’s grief made visible is left deliberately unresolved — the show never confirms if he’s somehow returned or if it’s only her imagination giving her one last moment of peace. Either way, a photo the two of them took together at the beach, previously missing him entirely, now shows him in the frame.

Heartbeat (2023) finale — Shaded Oasis goodbye

What It All Means. Heartbeat’s ending isn’t built for a clean, happy resolution — it’s built around the idea that Woo-hyeol’s 100-year wish was never really about becoming fully human. It was about feeling his heart race for someone, even once, even briefly. He gets that with In-hae, and the show treats his death as bittersweet rather than tragic: a complete story rather than a cut-short one. It’s the kind of ending that rewards viewers looking for emotional closure over narrative neatness, and it’s also the exact reason a chunk of the fandom walked away unsatisfied — the vampire lore is never fully explained, and several supporting threads (Do-sik’s full recovery, the fate of the town’s remaining vampires) are left loose.

Heartbeat (2023) finale — final goodbye

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

💛 Cozy Cohabitation
🦇 Vampire Rom-Com
😂 Goofy First Half
💔 Bittersweet Finale
🌊 Small-Town Charm

Ok Taec-yeon has built a real niche playing characters who are warm and a little ridiculous, and Heartbeat leans hard into that strength. His Seon Woo-hyeol is goofy, persistent, and genuinely lovable in a way that makes the first half of this show breeze by — a vampire rom-com that actually plays to the comedy of its premise instead of treating the supernatural element as set dressing. Won Ji-an, in her first lead role, holds her own as the prickly In-hae, even if the chemistry between the two leads is more cute than electric.

Heartbeat (2023) — cinematic still

Where the show stumbles is in its tonal whiplash. Episodes 1 through 9 are breezy, comedic, low-stakes television — the kind of thing you put on to unwind. Then the back half pivots hard into melodrama, introducing mortality, sacrifice, and a slow-burn tragedy that the earlier episodes never quite earned the emotional groundwork for. The vampire lore itself stays frustratingly vague throughout — we never get a clear sense of the rules governing who can become human, why the dagger works the way it does, or what happens to the town’s other vampires once the dust settles.

The ending is the most divisive part of the whole experience. It’s deliberately bittersweet and intentionally ambiguous, prioritizing a quiet emotional note over giving every plot thread a bow. If you go in expecting a guaranteed happy ending from a fantasy rom-com, you may walk away frustrated — plenty of viewers did. But if you can meet the show on its own terms, the final stretch lands as a genuinely tender meditation on loving someone you know you’re going to lose. Worth it for the journey, even if the destination splits the room.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🦇 Fans of cozy, low-stakes supernatural rom-coms
💛 Anyone who loves a slow-burn cohabitation story
😭 Viewers okay with a bittersweet, open-ended finale

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Ok Taec-yeon’s warm, comedic lead performance carries the whole show
Genuinely fresh spin on the tired vampire-romance formula
Colorful small-town setting and quirky supporting cast
First half balances comedy and slow-burn romance well

What to know first
Lead chemistry cools off noticeably in the back half
Vampire lore is introduced but never fully explained
Final stretch swaps comedy for melodrama rather abruptly
Bittersweet ending divided viewers and left threads loose

7.4 / 10A breezy, big-hearted vampire rom-com that coasts on Ok Taec-yeon’s charm — until its back half trades laughs for melodrama and an ending that splits the fandom right down the middle.
