Our Unwritten Seoul

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

Park Bo-young has played sweet before — repeatedly, to great success. What makes Our Unwritten Seoul different is that she arrived specifically not to do that. As Mi-ji and Mi-rae, she’s playing two versions of exhaustion: one loud and directionless, one polished and quietly collapsing. The dual role works not because she swaps costumes and hairstyles — though those details are precise — but because she builds each twin from the inside out. The way Mi-rae holds her breath before she speaks. The way Mi-ji fills a room she’s already decided to leave. It’s the best performance she’s given since Daily Dose of Sunshine, and it carries more tonal range.

The drama has a pace that will divide viewers. Episodes run close to 80 minutes, and director Park Shin-woo — the same man behind Our Beloved Summer‘s lyrical quietness — lingers on countryside scenes, afternoon light, strawberry fields in the rain. If that sounds like filler, this isn’t the drama for you. If it sounds like the point, you’re in the right place. The romantic triangle is handled with more maturity than the genre usually allows: Ho-su’s partial deafness is written as character rather than tragedy, and Park Jin-young plays it with a stillness that makes the eventual emotional opening feel genuinely earned rather than scripted.

The middle episodes stretch, and some of the workplace-bullying plot lacks the specificity to sting the way the writers clearly intended. But the finale makes a choice that most healing dramas don’t: it gives both sisters an ending that looks like work, not rescue. Mi-ji enrolls in university. Mi-rae grows strawberries. Neither is handed a life — they choose one. In 2025, that’s the most romantic thing a K-drama could do.
