Yoo Na-bi swore off love after being cheated on by her first boyfriend — until Park Jae-eon walked into her fine arts workshop. He is charming, magnetic, and completely unwilling to commit. She knows every red flag. She stays anyway.

Set against the hazy, intimate world of a Seoul graduate art school, Nevertheless, is adapted from the Naver Webtoon by Jung Seo. It follows two emotionally guarded people circling each other in an ambiguous friends-with-benefits dynamic — one afraid to trust, the other afraid to feel — and asks whether knowing someone is wrong for you is ever enough of a reason to walk away. Childhood friend Yang Do-hyeok complicates the picture further, offering Na-bi everything Jae-eon refuses to give. The answer the drama arrives at is not a comfortable one.

The finale opens in the aftermath of their rain-soaked falling out, both wallowing separately in regret. Na-bi’s semester project — a clay sculpture — is found destroyed on the studio floor, threatening her grade. Jae-eon steps forward and promises to help her rebuild it, vowing that once finished, he will honor her request and leave her alone forever. The entire friend group works silently through the night to restore the piece, which takes shape as a rustic angel with broken wings. As the project nears completion and Jae-eon truly begins to withdraw, Na-bi realizes she cannot let him go — she chases after him, and the two finally choose each other, fully and without conditions.

🏁 Ending Explained

⚠️
Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of Nevertheless, Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

A destroyed sculpture becomes the final test. Na-bi’s clay project — weeks of work — is found smashed on the studio floor, threatening her with a failing grade. In one of the drama’s most revealing moments, it is Jae-eon who steps forward without being asked. He promises to help her rebuild it from nothing, but he attaches one condition entirely to himself: once the piece is finished, he will honor her request and disappear from her life completely. The gesture is not grand or theatrical. It is quiet, practical, and for the first time in ten episodes, entirely without manipulation.

Nevertheless, (2021) Episode 9 — I Know It's Over

The angel with broken wings. Through the night, the full friend group works in silence to restore Na-bi’s sculpture — Jae-eon, Do-hyeok, Bit-na, Kyu-hyun, Sol, Ji-wan, all of them together. The piece that emerges is described as a rustic angel with broken wings, which the drama makes no effort to over-explain. It is Na-bi in clay: someone who has been damaged, who has not fully healed, and who has chosen to exist anyway. By morning, the sculpture is finished. Jae-eon, true to his word, begins to genuinely walk away. He is not performing distance this time — he is leaving.

She chooses him — and the drama chooses honesty. Na-bi chases after him. The finale’s answer is not that Jae-eon has transformed, or that love has made him safe. It is that Na-bi has weighed everything she knows about him — his evasions, his games, his fundamental difficulty — and chosen him anyway, with full information. The drama earned controversy for this ending precisely because it refuses to reward that choice with a transformation montage. What it offers instead is something rarer: two people deciding to be together without the script being rewritten. The supporting couples settle into something quieter and more sustainable — Sol and Ji-wan openly embrace their relationship, Bit-na and Kyu-hyun find a comfortable warmth. The finale of Nevertheless, does not promise that choosing someone difficult will make them easier — it only suggests that sometimes, knowing all the reasons not to is still not enough to make you go.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

🌙 Hazy & Intimate🎨 Art School Tension💋 Lust vs. Love🌿 Summer in Seoul

The reason Nevertheless, divides people so cleanly is also the reason it works. Most K-dramas about a difficult love interest eventually soften him — give him a tragic backstory, a redemption arc, a moment where he becomes the man he should have been all along. Nevertheless, does not do this. Park Jae-eon is charming and evasive and emotionally manipulative, and by the finale he is still essentially that person. What changes is not him — it is Na-bi’s relationship to that knowledge. Han So-hee plays this with a kind of aching precision: the confusion is real, the desire is real, and crucially, the self-awareness is real too. She knows what he is. She wants him anyway. The drama trusts the audience to sit with that discomfort without resolving it into something cleaner. For viewers who want a love story that validates the feeling — as opposed to one that corrects it — this is quietly exceptional work. For those who find Doctor Slump‘s warmer, more reciprocal dynamic more their speed, Nevertheless, will be a difficult watch.

Nevertheless, (2021) — cinematic still

Song Kang does something genuinely difficult here. Jae-eon is written to be attractive and difficult in equal measure — the kind of role that can easily tip into cartoon villainy or, worse, unearned sympathy. Song Kang holds the line. He is warm in the moments that make Na-bi stay and cold in the moments that remind you why she should go, and crucially, he never signals which of those is the real him. That ambiguity is the engine of the whole drama. The supporting romance between Lee Ho-jung’s Yoon Sol and Yoon Seo-ah’s Ji-wan is, by contrast, one of the most genuinely tender queer storylines K-drama had produced up to that point — quieter than the main plot, less complicated, and ultimately more satisfying. The two stories exist in deliberate contrast: one couple who communicate openly and reach each other, one who cannot, and the drama never loses track of that difference even when it refuses to editorialize about it.

The adaptation is faithful to Jung Seo’s webtoon in ways that will frustrate viewers who came expecting narrative resolution, and reward those who came expecting emotional accuracy. The art school setting — clay studios, life drawing sessions, exhibition deadlines — is used with more intelligence than most dramas bring to their settings. Na-bi’s sculpture is not background texture; it is the thesis statement of the finale. Nevertheless, is a drama about people who are fluent in desire and illiterate in communication, and it is drawn with enough honesty that the ending feels less like a choice the writer made and more like one the characters were always going to arrive at, because knowing all the reasons not to has never, in the entire history of wanting someone, been quite enough to make you stop.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🎨 Viewers who want a romance that doesn’t explain away its own contradictions
💗 Han So-hee fans — this is her most emotionally exposed performance
🌙 Anyone who has stayed too long for someone they knew wasn’t right

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Han So-hee’s most emotionally raw and unguarded performance to date
Song Kang as a genuinely difficult, never-softened love interest
Art school setting used meaningfully — the sculpture is the drama’s thesis
Sol / Ji-wan subplot is quietly one of K-drama’s best queer romances of its era

What to know first
10 episodes of push-and-pull with minimal romantic payoff until the finale
Jae-eon is written to be difficult — some viewers will find him genuinely irredeemable
Faithful webtoon adaptation — the divisive ending is intentional, not a mistake
If you need clear communication and healthy couple dynamics, skip this one

7.4 / 10Watch it — Han So-hee and Song Kang generate real, uncomfortable heat in a story honest enough to never pretend that knowing better is the same as doing better.
