Spring Fever

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

Ahn Bo-hyun has spent most of his career playing dangerous men — the villain in Itaewon Class, the relentless investigator in Flex x Cop, the undercover operative in My Name. Jae-gyu inverts all of that: a man whose entire appearance signals threat and whose every action signals the opposite. The performance works because Ahn never plays the warmth as a revelation. Jae-gyu doesn’t secretly become a good man — he just is one, obviously, and the drama trusts that the audience will figure it out alongside Bom rather than needing it explained.

The show’s most divisive element is the teachers’ subplot — a parallel romance involving Shinsu High’s faculty that takes up considerable screen time in the middle stretch. The split in audience reaction is fair: viewers who came for the two leads found it a distraction; viewers who engaged with the ensemble found it gave the town texture. Both reads are correct. The teachers’ storyline doesn’t damage the main romance, but it does dilute the pacing in episodes five through seven for anyone watching primarily for Bom and Jae-gyu. Director Park Won-gook made a similar call in Marry My Husband with its supporting players — here it’s a messier trade-off. What the show consistently gets right: every misunderstanding is resolved within the same episode. No artificial dragging. No extended cold shoulder. That restraint alone separates it from most of its genre peers.

The comparison to Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha is inevitable and largely accurate — city woman, countryside man, community-as-character. Where Spring Fever earns its own ground is in Jae-gyu’s specific kind of uncomplicated honesty. He’s not mysterious, not brooding, not withholding. He likes Bom, he tells her, and then he waits. The patience is the whole point. It runs a little longer than it needs to in the middle, and Se-jin’s subplot is sharper on paper than it is on screen. But the finale doesn’t fumble it — and for a rom-com, landing the ending is everything. Easy to start, hard to put down, harder to forget once you’re done.
