Hong Keum-bo (Park Shin-hye) is a 35-year-old elite inspector at Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service — a certified public accountant who has built her career on investigating economic crimes. When her key informant inside Hanmin Investment & Securities dies in a suspicious car accident before he can hand over evidence of massive financial fraud, the investigation is left without a witness. Park Shin-hye has spent enough of her career in serious, grief-heavy roles — The Judge from Hell, Sisyphus, Pinocchio — that seeing her fully commit to physical comedy here feels almost revelatory. Undercover Miss Hong works first and foremost because she makes Hong Keum-bo both competent and hilarious in the same breath. The bit isn’t “elite professional embarrasses herself constantly.” It’s “elite professional makes split-second choices about how dumb to look and mostly gets it right” — and that’s a harder, smarter thing to play. She earns every comedic moment because Keum-bo is always three steps ahead of everyone else in the room, even when she’s pretending not to be.

The Ko Kyung-pyo question is fair: his Jung-woo is noticeably underwritten in the first half, and viewers who came for the romance will feel the imbalance. The show is more interested in its women — Keum-bo, Bok-hee, No-ra, Mi-sook — than in any love story, and this is probably the right call. When Jung-woo does get space, Ko Kyung-pyo earns it, but the drama never fully commits to his character arc the way it commits to Bok-hee’s. Ha Yoon-kyung is quietly the show’s MVP — a performance that holds complexity in every scene and pays off completely in the finale.

The first episode is the hardest ask — slow setup, too much exposition, the comedy still finding its footing. Get through episode two and the dormitory world clicks into place. Episodes 13 and 15 are the best back-to-back pair of the year: sustained, funny, emotionally satisfying, and built on eight episodes of accumulated goodwill for characters who started as strangers. Director Park Seon-ho (who made Business Proposal) knows how to build ensemble warmth without sacrificing forward momentum, and it shows. A rare drama that gets better every single week.
