🔥 Romance Must-Watch
On Jeju Island in the 1950s, a spirited young girl named Oh Ae-sun dreams of becoming a poet — even as poverty, loss, and the rigid expectations placed on women threaten to close every door before she can reach it. The quiet, steadfast Yang Gwan-sik has loved her since childhood, and his devotion is the one constant in a life defined by upheaval. Together, they build a life across four decades, from Jeju’s windswept shores to the crowded streets of Seoul and Busan — through hardship, grief, small joys, and the slow accumulation of a shared history.
Spanning fifty years and three generations, When Life Gives You Tangerines is not a love story about grand gestures — it’s about what endures after the gestures are gone. Directed by Kim Won-seok (My Mister, Signal) and written by Lim Sang-choon (When the Camellia Blooms), the series won four awards at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards, including Best Drama. Time magazine named it the best Korean drama of 2025.

IU has been here before — the poor girl with impossible dreams, the woman who survives by being sharper than everyone expects. What makes her work in When Life Gives You Tangerines extraordinary is the dual role: she plays both Ae-sun in her 20s and 30s and Ae-sun’s daughter Geum-myeong in the present day. The two characters don’t share a single mannerism. The switch is complete — posture, timing, the way each woman holds a silence differently. It’s a technically demanding performance that most actors would find limiting. IU makes it look like the point.
The show has been compared endlessly to Reply 1988, and the comparison is fair up to a point — the nostalgia, the Jeju community, the way it reconstructs daily life across decades. But Tangerines is more explicitly feminist than that show ever was. It keeps returning to the question of what women were asked to give up and whether anyone noticed, and it doesn’t resolve that question cleanly. If you want a warmly reassuring drama, you’ll find that here — but the show earns it by showing you the cost first. The pacing is slow in places, and the time jumps in the middle episodes require patience. That patience is rewarded.
Kim Won-seok, who directed My Mister and Signal, operates here with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how long a silence can hold before it tips into something else. His Jeju cinematography is among the best location work in recent K-drama history. The writing from Lim Sang-choon (When the Camellia Blooms) avoids the twin traps of period drama: neither romanticizing poverty nor using it only for suffering. What you’re left with at the end is something that feels like a memory — not yours, but real enough that you’ll carry it. One of the finest K-dramas ever made.
Anyone drawn to Jeju Island, period settings, or generational storytelling
