The Haunted Palace

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

The Haunted Palace is not the show its premise suggests. On paper — Imugi possesses first love’s body, reluctant shaman must cooperate, palace haunting escalates — this sounds like a standard supernatural rom-com wearing a hanbok. In practice, it’s something more considered: a drama genuinely interested in where resentment comes from, how injustice accumulates across generations, and what it costs to finally reckon with it. That’s an unusual backbone for a Friday-Saturday crowd-pleaser, and the fact that it mostly works is credit to writer Yoon Soo-jung and a cast that takes the material seriously even when the material is asking them to be funny about rice gruel.

The show has a structural imbalance that splits viewers: Yook Sung-jae and Kim Ji-hoon are so good that everything else orbits them. Their dynamic — an arrogant immortal creature and a king who cannot afford to be wrong about anything — is the drama’s best relationship, funnier and more emotionally complex than the actual romance. Bona’s Yeo-ri is written with care, but early episodes give her a register that reads as stiff before it reveals itself as deliberate armour, and not everyone stays patient enough to see the payoff. The main villain also overstays his welcome by two episodes, which is a known sageuk problem. These are real criticisms. They don’t undermine a drama that sustains genuine charm across sixteen episodes and sticks its landing when it matters.

This is a show about setting aside assumptions, listening to those who have been wronged, and righting old wrongs without creating new ones. For a fantasy sageuk, that’s a quietly radical thesis — and it earns its happy ending by making the audience feel the weight of what it took to get there. If you’re in for the bromance, you’ll stay for the king.
