EP 01

The Soul That Crossed

Nak-su — the Shadow Assassin feared across Daeho — is gravely wounded in battle and performs the forbidden Alchemy of Souls to survive, landing inside the blind, frail body of a young servant named Mu-deok. Jang Uk, a young nobleman disgraced by rumors of his birth and unable to access his own power, begins his search for a master willing to train him. The collision between two desperate people with incompatible goals is set in motion from the first scene.

She maneuvers strategically close to Seo Yul to learn the technique, using Jang Uk’s jealousy as a precision instrument. Crown Prince Go Won challenges Jang Uk to a formal duel, engineered by Jin Mu.

Nak-su’s Origin

A flashback finally reveals the wound behind the Shadow Assassin: Nak-su’s father — a constellation recorder mage — was murdered by the leaders of Daeho’s four great families, and she has been Jin Mu’s instrument of revenge ever since. The duel terms are formalized. And in the forest of Danhyanggok, a masked man with a spirit-detecting Sapsali dog attempts to kill the sleeping Mu-deok — Jang Uk fights him off without hesitation.

The Sachet

Cornered by Jin Mu’s men at Chwiseonru, Mu-deok appeals to Crown Prince Won for protection — and receives it. Lady Jin Ho-gyeong enters the picture with her own offer: shelter for Jang Uk in exchange for a marriage to her daughter Cho-yeon. The episode is a masterclass in political maneuvering, and the tension between all three power centers — Songrim, Cheonbugwan, Jinyowon — becomes genuinely complex.

The Ice Stone

The history of the Ice Stone — a relic discovered 200 years ago whose black powder can power the Alchemy of Souls, resurrect the dead, and steal energy — is revealed in full, chilling detail. Jin Mu’s henchman Gil-ju discovers Mu-deok’s true identity and weaponizes it, blackmailing her into luring Jang Uk into a trap. The episode ends in rain and chaos: a sword fight, the Soul Ejector, an explosion witnessed across Songrim.

The Jade Ornament

Jang Uk survives, is accepted into Songrim for formal training, and crafts a matching pair of bird’s egg jade ornaments from a broken artifact — one for himself, one for Mu-deok. It is the drama’s most quietly romantic gesture, and it lands perfectly because nothing about it is announced. Park Jin’s suspicions about the Ice Stone deepen. Mu-deok is barred from Songrim, and the separation begins.

The Umbrella

A mysterious young woman named So-i arrives in the capital, searching for Mu-deok and pretending to be blind. Seo Yul gives Mu-deok his umbrella in the rain — a small gesture that carries significant weight for everyone watching. The Songrim barrier that separates Mu-deok from Jang Uk is felt not through grand declarations but through the accumulation of small distances.

The Servant Exam

July 16, 2022

Mu-deok enters the Songrim servant exams against 124 other applicants — a spectacular, comedic, and quietly desperate move to get back to Jang Uk. Lady Jin Ho-gyeong’s obsessive search for her lost daughter Bu-yeon introduces a new layer: the flower insignia on Mu-deok’s silk ribbon is identical to the one made for Bu-yeon. The implication hangs in the air like smoke.

The Jade Duel

July 23, 2022

Mu-deok realizes she has fallen in love with Jang Uk — and immediately uses the realization to engineer a solution rather than dwell on it. She arranges a public duel challenge against ten Jeongjingak warriors, with her prized blue bird’s egg jade as the stakes, specifically to snap Jang Uk out of a depression he doesn’t know she caused. The episode is a perfect encapsulation of who these two people are.

The Gauntlet

Jang Uk fights his way through the Jeongjingak warriors one by one, losing consistently and improving with each defeat — a training montage that works because the emotional stakes behind it are fully established. Jin Mu engineers a secret soul-shifting ritual and covers his tracks. Crown Prince Won, using the energy filled in Mu-deok’s jade ornament as a tracker, begins to piece together the full picture of Jang Uk’s secret training.

The Constellation Basin

A flashback reveals that the young Bu-yeon attempted to destroy the Ice Stone and was pushed into a river by Jin Mu. In the present, Mu-deok accidentally triggers the Soul Ejector’s power when she touches the water in a constellation basin — a lightning strike erupts, and Jin Mu witnesses it. He is struck by her resemblance to the real Bu-yeon. The conspiracy is beginning to collapse inward on itself.

The Final Prize

July 30, 2022

Crown Prince Won, furious at being used as an unwitting training tool, makes one last move: Mu-deok herself must be the prize for Jang Uk’s final duel. Jin Mu silences all of So-i’s contacts in the capital. Jang Uk faces the decisive last duel at Jeongjingak — everything Mu-deok has taught him, compressed into a single test. The episode is tense in a way the earlier training sequences were not, because the cost is finally clear.

Gwigu

The spirit-detecting Sapsali dog Gwigu becomes the episode’s most important character — Jang Uk brings it into the palace on Master Lee’s orders to expose soul shifters, and is ambushed by Cheonbugwan forces. Meanwhile, a flashback reveals that Master Lee achieved Hwansu (the highest mage level) and shifted his own soul into a young body decades ago — a secret everyone assumed was simply his death.

Interrogation

Park Jin locks up both Mu-deok and Jang Uk in separate areas of Songrim and interrogates them individually — trying to extract the truth about their forbidden arrangement. Gwigu shocks everyone by attacking Jin Cho-yeon, Jinyowon’s heir. Crown Prince Won travels to Gaema Village looking for the missing Eunuch Kim, beginning to suspect something deeply wrong about Queen Seo Ha-sun’s identity.

The King’s Star

Master Jang Gang reappears in Daeho after a long absence, recognizes Jang Uk through the sword he carries, and warns him that the sorcery in Gaema Village could consume his soul. Jin Mu attempts to seduce Crown Prince Won with promises of eternal life through the Ice Stone — dangling the fake Bu-yeon (So-i) as proof. Mu-deok and Jang Uk piece together that So-i is an imposter, raising the terrifying question of who the real Bu-yeon is.

The Assembly

Lady Jin Ho-gyeong convenes a surprise Unanimous Assembly and reveals the Ice Stone — announcing that her daughter Bu-yeon (So-i) has returned to lead Jinyowon. The revelation detonates the political landscape of Daeho: the four families fracture over who controls the Stone. Queen Seo Ha-sun and Jin Mu plot to use the chaos for a soul-shifting ritual. The King, fatally intrigued by the Stone’s power to resurrect the dead, selects Mu-deok as a test subject.

The full origin of Mu-deok’s identity is finally revealed in a flashback — the real Bu-yeon was pushed into a river by Jin Mu, found by a grandmother, and raised as Mu-deok with no memory of her past. With Seo Yul’s life hanging by a thread and enemies converging on Jeongjingak, Jang Uk makes the most desperate decision of the series: he will attempt Tansu — weather control strong enough to shatter the Ice Stone’s barrier — despite Mu-deok’s warning that it could destroy him entirely.

The Proposal

Park Jin publicly exposes Queen Seo Ha-sun as the impersonator Shaman Choi, dismantling the palace conspiracy from within. Jang Gang heroically absorbs the catastrophic energy of the Soul Ejector to prevent mass casualties, then confesses to the King that he alone bears responsibility for the chaos caused by the Ice Stone — crucially denying being Jang Uk’s father to protect him from treason charges. Seo Yul and Mu-deok share a bittersweet farewell. And in the final scene — Jang Uk stumbles upon Mu-deok in a wedding dress at Chwiseonru, she formally ends their master-pupil contract, and he immediately proposes. The season closes on a fragile and hopeful note, with Jin Mu still lurking.

The finale opens with Park Jin dismantling the palace conspiracy from the inside. Using fake ashes of Gwigu as bait, he publicly exposes Queen Seo Ha-sun as the impersonator Shaman Choi — humiliating Lady Jin Ho-gyeong and revealing her husband U-tak as Shaman Choi’s brother. It’s a clean, satisfying unraveling for the political thread that has been the season’s slowest-burning fuse. The public unmasking scene is staged for maximum institutional damage: every major power player witnesses it simultaneously, and none of them can walk it back.

The catastrophe at Jeongjingak is where the finale earns its emotional weight. U-tak stabs himself to give Queen Seo Ha-sun one final Soul Ejector — triggering a catastrophic Alchemy of Souls event that threatens everyone trapped inside the Ice Stone barrier. Jang Gang’s response is the season’s moral and emotional climax: he absorbs the full force of the released energy into himself, sacrificing his own wellbeing to prevent mass casualties. It is not a flashy death, not a triumphant sacrifice — it is a quiet, devastated choice made by a man who has been running from his mistakes for decades and finally stops.

Jang Gang’s confession to the King and the Unanimous Assembly reframes everything. He accepts full responsibility for the chaos caused by the Ice Stone across an entire generation of Daeho — and crucially denies being Jang Uk’s biological father, shielding him from treason charges. This is not mercy for Jang Uk’s sake alone: it is Jang Gang’s attempt to give his son the one thing he never could — a future that isn’t defined by his father’s crimes. The mage community draws the wrong conclusion, assuming Crown Prince Won carries the King’s Star. Jin Mu, privately, knows better.

The Seo Yul farewell is the season’s most purely heartbreaking scene. Recovering from near-fatal wounds, Yul meets Mu-deok one last time. She returns his bird whistle — the one small object connecting her to the girl he once loved. His love for her is not denied, not redirected into anger: it is simply acknowledged and set down. Minhyun plays it with such controlled grief that the scene works precisely because nothing melodramatic is demanded of it. The girl he loved, she tells him, no longer exists. He believes her. They both do.

And then — the proposal. Jang Uk finds Mu-deok at Chwiseonru wearing a wedding dress for a theatrical performance, and she formally ends their master-pupil contract. He responds immediately with a marriage proposal. There is no big speech, no manufactured drama — just two people who have been circling each other for twenty episodes arriving, finally, at the only logical conclusion. The season closes on this fragile hopefulness while Jin Mu vows in the shadows to eliminate Jang Uk, the true bearer of the King’s Star. Season 1 does not pretend the war is over. It just insists, quietly, that love is worth fighting for anyway.
