Assemblyman Kim Seung-cheol dies in what looks like a car accident. On the same day, his son-in-law Jeong Sang-hun disappears without a trace. His youngest daughter, Kim Seo-hee — sheltered, overlooked, perpetually in the shadow of her older sister — refuses to accept either event at face value. Determined to find both her father’s killer and her husband, she runs for the vacant National Assembly seat, buying herself access to the political world that may hold every answer.

She finds an unlikely partner in Jo Tae-sik, a detective who once burned bright before the job ground him down. He’s requested a quiet transfer to the countryside — one last case before he disappears from all of it. That last case pulls him into something far larger: a cover-up involving industrial contamination, corporate complicity, and a network of powerful people who have spent years ensuring that the residents of Songju died quietly and anonymously, without ever knowing why.

📺 Episode Guide

Spoiler-light recaps — enough to remember where you left off, nothing that ruins the ride.

The Lies Within Episode 1 — Hand
EP 01
Hand
October 12, 2019
Two events on the same day — a dead assemblyman, a missing son-in-law — that everyone wants to treat as unrelated. Tae-sik’s called in for what should be a routine suicide check and immediately knows something is wrong. The episode is efficient and cold: it doesn’t try to be likeable, it tries to be right.

The Lies Within Episode 2 — Target
EP 02
Target
October 13, 2019
Sang-hun and Seung-cheol were working together on something — that much becomes clear. The episode does the unglamorous work of establishing what the investigation is actually looking for, while Seo-hee starts learning how to move through a political world that’s been designed to keep people like her out.

The Lies Within Episode 3 — Bait
EP 03
Bait
October 19, 2019
A factory worker Tae-sik was trying to reach turns up dead — and the trail that seemed like it might lead somewhere goes cold fast. Seo-hee throws herself into campaign mode, which is a smart structural choice: her political world and his investigative one are running parallel, and the show is patient enough to let them stay that way for now.

The Lies Within Episode 4 — Restart
EP 04
Restart
October 20, 2019
Seo-hee announces her candidacy. It’s a bold move that shouldn’t work — and that’s exactly what makes it interesting. The show understands that her presence in the political arena is the mechanism of the whole story: she’s not there to win. She’s there to watch who gets nervous.

The Lies Within Episode 5 — The Other Side
EP 05
The Other Side
October 26, 2019
Ho-gyu goes undercover at the mental hospital — a neat structural detour that pays off more than it should given how quickly it’s resolved. Seo-hee overhears something she wasn’t supposed to. The episode is at its best in the margins: small moments where people accidentally reveal more than they mean to.

The Lies Within Episode 6 — Disappear
EP 06
Disappear
October 27, 2019
The mental hospital thread closes but Sang-hun remains missing and the investigation is starting to feel like it’s running in circles. Seo-hee confronts Jeong Young-mun — the scene is the episode’s best, and the first time we see her ask the right question at the right moment without anyone telling her to.

The Lies Within Episode 7 — Jealousy
EP 07
Jealousy
November 2, 2019
Jin Young-min enters properly — and his history with Sang-hun is where the conspiracy suddenly gets a human face. On Ju-wan is doing something interesting here: Young-min is not a cardboard villain, he’s a man shaped by proximity to power for so long he’s become its instrument. The episode opens the drama up considerably.

The Lies Within Episode 8 — Eye
EP 08
Eye
November 3, 2019
Seo-hee comes clean about the anonymous messages — a long-overdue moment that finally brings the two leads into genuine partnership rather than parallel motion. The lead on a funeral Sang-hun attended before he vanished is small, but it’s the kind of detail this show is good at: a crack in the surface that everything will eventually fall through.

The Lies Within Episode 9 — Unknown
EP 09
Unknown
November 9, 2019
They find the list. Then someone destroys it. Chief In remotely wipes Seo-hee’s computer before they can properly examine what they’ve found — a brutal, efficient move that captures exactly how a conspiracy of this scale operates: not by eliminating people, but by eliminating evidence. The episode ends with both characters scrambling to remember what they saw.

The Lies Within Episode 10 — Unknown
EP 10
Unknown
November 10, 2019
Working from Seo-hee’s fragmented memory of the list, they travel to the Songju area and find a resident whose child died of cancer — a death connected to industrial contamination that the powerful have spent years burying. The episode is one of the best in the run: it locates the conspiracy in real human loss and makes the stakes feel personal rather than procedural.

The Lies Within Episode 11 — Framed
EP 11
Framed
November 16, 2019
Tae-sik is on the run — and Jin-kyung, who has spent most of the series as the team’s weakest link, steps up to clear him. Watching her put the pieces together without him is the episode’s unexpected pleasure. He recovers the list. The show’s second half is now properly in motion.

The Lies Within Episode 12 — Disclosure
EP 12
Disclosure
November 17, 2019
The thread connecting all the names on the list comes into focus — not random corruption but a deliberate, systematic pattern. Tae-sik and Jin-kyung, working from grief and anger in equal measure, finally get to be useful to Seo-hee in a meaningful way. The conspiracy is now legible. What happens next is the question.

The Lies Within Episode 13 — Real Intention
EP 13
Real Intention
November 23, 2019
A trap is devised. Another cryptic message from Sang-hun pushes the investigation somewhere new. The episode does the work of getting everything into position — and Tae-sik and Jin-kyung’s dynamic here, built entirely from shared exhaustion and a grudging mutual respect, is the most quietly compelling thing the show has produced.

The Lies Within Episode 14 — Survivor
EP 14
Survivor
November 24, 2019
Seo-hee holds a press conference — the drama’s best use of her character. She’s not wielding evidence here, she’s wielding attention, and the show understands the difference. Meanwhile Tae-sik tails Jin Young-min, who is making moves of his own around JQ Group that suggest the conspiracy is shifting beneath everyone’s feet.

The Lies Within Episode 15 — Unknown
EP 15
Unknown
November 30, 2019
The net closes. Chief In and Yoo Dae-yong are visible in the crosshairs. The political and criminal strands of the conspiracy are finally converging, and the episode’s job is to make sure every piece is in place before the finale tears it all down. It does its job cleanly.

The Lies Within Episode 16 — Those Who Were Silent, Those Who Were Not
EP 16
Those Who Were Silent, Those Who Were Not
December 1, 2019
Chief In and Yoo Dae-yong are arrested. The Songju contamination cover-up is finally exposed. Then a phone call — and the finale pivots into something far more devastating than a corruption procedural has any right to be. The show earns its ending, and the final confrontation between Seo-hee and her mother is one of the most quietly shattering scenes Korean crime television has produced.

🏁 Ending Explained

Full spoilers ahead — everything that happens in the finale and what it all means.

Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of The Lies Within. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

The Arrests — and What They Don’t Solve. Chief In and Yoo Dae-yong are finally brought in. The corruption network that orchestrated the Songju industrial contamination cover-up — a cover-up that let ordinary people die of cancer without ever knowing why — is dismantled. It’s a satisfying procedural resolution. What the show understands is that arresting the people in the middle of a conspiracy is not the same as reaching its center.

The Lies Within (2019) Episode 15 — Unknown

Sang-hun Was Alive — and He Chose This. Then the phone rings. Sang-hun is alive. The drama’s central mystery — where is Seo-hee’s husband, and what happened to him — resolves not as a kidnapping or a murder but as a calculated sacrifice. Sang-hun discovered the Songju cover-up from the inside. Terminally ill, knowing what was coming for him, he devised the only play available: disappear, send pieces of his own body as evidence to expose the conspiracy, and operate in the shadows until justice was possible. He was not a victim of the conspiracy. He was fighting it — alone, in secret, all along.

Two Agendas Running at Once. The finale’s most structurally interesting reveal is that there were always two separate operations: one faction covering up the Songju contamination and pushing through a corrupt new business bill; another — Sang-hun’s — working covertly to dismantle it. What looked like a single sprawling conspiracy was in fact two conspiracies in opposition, running through the same people and the same political corridors simultaneously. The show doesn’t announce this as a twist. It lets you assemble it from the pieces you’ve been collecting for sixteen episodes.

The Lies Within (2019) Episode 8 — Eye

Sang-hun’s Letter — and Jung Young-mun’s Grief. His farewell letter is revealed. For Seo-hee, who spent sixteen episodes searching for a man she thought needed saving, it’s devastating: the man she was trying to rescue was the one trying to save everyone else. For Jung Young-mun — who loved Sang-hun like a son — it’s something closer to unbearable. The letter and the grief around it give the show its emotional center, and they arrive at exactly the right moment: after the plot is resolved, when the only thing left is what all of it cost.

Seo-hee and Her Mother — the Scene the Whole Drama Was Building Toward. The final confrontation isn’t with a villain. It’s with Seo-hee’s mother, who confesses she knew the truth and chose silence. Chose comfort. Chose family reputation over the people of Songju dying without knowing why. And Seo-hee delivers the line that the drama has been building toward since the first episode: “While we lived well and stayed silent, people in Songju died without even knowing why. Had just one of us spoken up and exposed them, none of this would have had to happen in the first place.” It is not a dramatic speech. It is a reckoning. The real indictment in The Lies Within was never of the corrupt — it was of everyone who saw and said nothing.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

🌑 Slow Burn🏛️ Political Corruption🕵️ Investigation💔 Hidden Sacrifice

The Lies Within is an OCN political thriller that does one thing better than almost any drama in its genre: it earns its ending. Lee Min-ki plays Jo Tae-sik as a man whose competence is the last thing keeping him upright — sharp, effective, quietly exhausted in a way that reads as entirely real. His performance is the show’s spine. Without it, the procedural scaffolding would feel mechanical. With it, even the mid-season episodes where the investigation is spinning its wheels carry a weight that’s specific to this character. Lee You-young works hard with the material she’s given as Seo-hee, and the political angle she brings to the story — a grieving woman running for her dead father’s assembly seat as a way into the world that killed him — is genuinely smart. The problem is that the show is never as interested in Seo-hee as it is in Tae-sik, and the imbalance shows in her writing more than in her performance.

The Lies Within (2019) — cinematic still

The Songju contamination cover-up at the core of the conspiracy is where the show distinguishes itself from standard Korean political thriller fare. It’s not about embezzlement or power struggles in the abstract — it’s about industrial companies contaminating a community and buying the silence of everyone positioned to stop them, while ordinary people died of cancers they couldn’t explain. That specificity gives the drama its moral weight. The villain structure is less successful: Yoo Dae-yong arrives as a genuine threat but the mechanics of his exposure are somewhat predictable once the mid-season list sequence kicks in. Viewers who are paying close attention will likely see the endgame several episodes before the show reaches it. That predictability is offset, but not entirely overcome, by the quality of the final two episodes.

The finale is the reason to watch this. Not just the Sang-hun revelation — which reframes sixteen episodes of searching in a single phone call — but the confrontation between Seo-hee and her mother, which is one of the sharpest pieces of writing Korean crime television has produced in the 2019 cycle. The show’s thesis lands there: that complicit silence is not neutrality, that choosing comfort over truth is itself a form of participation in injustice. It’s a harder moral argument than most dramas in this space are willing to make. The Lies Within makes it clearly and without softening. See it through to the end — that’s where it becomes something.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🕵️ OCN crime thriller fans who want a fully resolved mystery
🏛️ Viewers who enjoy political corruption with genuine moral stakes
💔 Anyone willing to invest 16 episodes for a devastating, earned finale

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Lee Min-ki’s grounded, weary performance — the show’s load-bearing wall
Songju contamination cover-up — corruption rooted in real human cost
Sang-hun’s reveal — reframes everything retroactively
Finale’s mother confrontation — the sharpest scene in the run

What to know first
Seo-hee is underwritten — her arc is frustrating given Lee You-young’s capability
16 episodes is too long — pacing sags visibly around episodes 5–6
Villain is predictable — sharp viewers will see it coming
Streaming on Netflix only — no Viki or other platforms

7.9 / 10A solid OCN procedural that builds patiently toward a finale worth every episode — stay for the ending.
