Ten years ago, a murder tore four inseparable friends apart — three of them let the fourth take the blame, and watched her flee to America rather than face the truth. Queen of Masks opens with that fourth friend, Go Yoo-na, coming home. Not for revenge, at least not at first — her own daughter has gone missing, and finding her means walking straight back into the lives of the women who buried her once already.

What she doesn’t know is how much has changed underneath the surface. Do Jae-yi, the group’s most famous face, has built a public career as a celebrity human rights lawyer while secretly doing the mayor of Tongju City’s dirtiest work — and hiding a trauma of her own tied to a masked assailant she’s spent a decade trying to identify. Underneath all four women’s carefully maintained lives sits the Angel Club, an exclusive, mask-mandatory society for Korea’s rich and politically connected, and the deeper anyone digs into it, the more people around them start turning up dead.

📺 Episode Guide

Just enough to stay oriented, episode by episode.

Queen of Masks Episode 1 — Ten Years, One Return EP 01
Ten Years, One Return
Apr 24, 2023
Go Yoo-na comes back to Korea from the US, driven by her daughter’s disappearance, and finds herself face to face with the three friends who let her take the fall for a murder a decade ago. Do Jae-yi, introduced as the country’s most trusted human rights lawyer, is shown doing exactly the opposite behind closed doors — quietly fixing the mayor of Tongju City’s dirtiest problems while nursing an ambition none of her admirers would recognize. The premiere sets up every fault line the season will spend fifteen more episodes cracking open.

Queen of Masks Episode 2 — The Wedding That Wasn't Supposed to Happen EP 02
The Wedding That Wasn’t Supposed to Happen
Apr 25, 2023
Joo Yu-jung’s engagement announcement should be the group’s first real celebration in years, but Do Jae-yi’s reaction makes clear something about the match is deeply, personally wrong for her. Go Yoo-na’s search for her missing daughter picks up its first real lead, pulling her further into the same social circle she spent a decade trying to escape. The bridal shower being planned in the background carries a weight none of the four women seem willing to name out loud yet.

Queen of Masks Episode 3 — Blood at the Bridal Shower EP 03
Blood at the Bridal Shower
May 1, 2023
The murder everyone’s been circling finally happens — at Yu-jung’s own bridal shower, in front of the exact women who spent ten years pretending the last one never occurred. It’s the moment the show has been building toward since the premiere, and it instantly reopens every wound the four friends spent a decade trying to bury separately. Whatever peace Go Yoo-na hoped to make with her old friends is gone before it started.

Queen of Masks Episode 4 — Old Lies, New Blood EP 04
Old Lies, New Blood
May 2, 2023
In the murder’s aftermath, old suspicions resurface alongside new ones — the parallels to what happened a decade ago are too obvious for anyone in the group to ignore. Do Jae-yi works both sides of the investigation, publicly reassuring and privately maneuvering, while Go Yoo-na realizes the people she came back to confront are now also the people she needs to survive. The daughter search takes a backseat to a much more immediate danger.

Queen of Masks Episode 5 — The Club Beneath the Orphanage EP 05
The Club Beneath the Orphanage
May 8, 2023
Do Jae-yi’s investigation finally has a destination: the Angel Club, an exclusive, mask-mandatory members’ circle hidden beneath a foundation-run orphanage, open only to the rich and politically connected. What she finds inside confirms the club isn’t just a rich people’s indulgence — it’s the machine behind everything the season has hinted at. She starts quietly copying every membership list and financial record she can access.

Queen of Masks Episode 6 — Watched EP 06
Watched
May 9, 2023
Song Jae-hyuk catches Do Jae-yi’s covert data-copying on the club’s own security feed, and his reaction — a phone call made the instant he suspects something’s wrong — makes clear he’s neither an innocent bystander nor fully loyal to whoever he’s protecting. It’s the first sign the season gives that Do Jae-yi’s investigation has been noticed by someone dangerous. The tension of being watched without knowing by whom starts to color every scene that follows.

Queen of Masks Episode 7 — What Yu-jung Doesn't Know EP 07
What Yu-jung Doesn’t Know
May 15, 2023
Do Jae-yi uncovers a connection between Yu-jung’s new fiancé and her own decade-old trauma, and the discovery puts her in an impossible position — expose it and destroy her friend’s happiness, or protect the secret and keep living beside the truth in silence. It’s the sharpest version yet of the choice the whole season keeps forcing on these women: loyalty to each other, or the truth. She doesn’t decide easily, and the show doesn’t let her.

Queen of Masks Episode 8 — Hae-mi's Move EP 08
Hae-mi’s Move
May 16, 2023
Yoon Hae-mi, mostly a background presence for the group’s bigger dramas so far, makes a calculated power play of her own at Mariana Hotel — a reminder that of the four women, she’s spent the least time being anyone’s victim. Go Yoo-na, meanwhile, gets closer to whoever’s connected to her daughter’s disappearance, and the trail starts pointing somewhere much closer to home than she expected.

Queen of Masks Episode 9 — Choi Kang-hoo's Price EP 09
Choi Kang-hoo’s Price
May 22, 2023
Choi Kang-hoo becomes the episode’s focus as his ties to the Angel Club’s dirtier business get harder to separate from his public reputation, and the show starts treating him less like a side character and more like a man running out of room to maneuver. Do Jae-yi’s evidence-gathering accelerates, and for the first time it feels like she’s genuinely close to having enough to bring the whole structure down — exactly the kind of progress that gets noticed by the wrong people.

Queen of Masks Episode 10 — The Net Closes EP 10
The Net Closes
May 23, 2023
Everything that’s been building — the club, the wedding fallout, Song Jae-hyuk’s surveillance, Go Yoo-na’s search — starts converging on the same handful of people at once, and the episode makes clear that whatever happens next, it’s happening to all four women together, not separately. It’s the calm immediately before the season’s biggest turn, and it plays exactly like one.

Queen of Masks Episode 11 — What Happened to Jae-hyuk EP 11
What Happened to Jae-hyuk
May 29, 2023
Song Jae-hyuk turns up dead, and the show doesn’t waste time treating it as a slow-played mystery — it’s an immediate, seismic shift in who has power and who’s now exposed. Whatever he knew, whoever he was protecting or reporting to, dies with him, and every character who’d been using him as a source or a shield now has to find a new plan fast.

Queen of Masks Episode 12 — The Body They Can't Explain EP 12
The Body They Can’t Explain
May 30, 2023
The fallout from Jae-hyuk’s death dominates the episode — an investigation nobody wants looking too closely, and a group of people who all have very good reasons to want it closed fast. It’s the highest-rated episode of the show’s run for a reason: the season finally starts paying off threads it’s been setting since the premiere, and the pace never lets up once it starts.

Queen of Masks Episode 13 — Chairman Kang's Wife EP 13
Chairman Kang’s Wife
Jun 5, 2023
A new player steps fully into the light as Chairman Kang’s household, previously mentioned only in passing, becomes directly relevant to the investigation, and the show starts drawing a much bigger, much older picture than the one Do Jae-yi thought she was fighting. The Angel Club stops looking like a symptom and starts looking like the disease.

Queen of Masks Episode 14 — Choi Kang-hoo's Reckoning EP 14
Choi Kang-hoo’s Reckoning
Jun 6, 2023
Choi Kang-hoo’s exposure finally catches up with him, and the show treats his fall the same way it’s treated everyone else’s — as a domino in a much larger structure, not an isolated punishment. With two of the season’s key men now dead or exposed, the remaining question isn’t who’s guilty. It’s who’s actually been running things this whole time.

Queen of Masks Episode 15 — The Man Nobody Suspected EP 15
The Man Nobody Suspected
Jun 12, 2023
The Angel Club’s real architect is revealed, and it’s someone the show has kept so far in the background that the reveal lands as a genuine reversal rather than a twist anyone saw coming — Kang Il-goo, a name that’s meant almost nothing until this exact episode, turns out to be the reason every death this season happened at all. Do Jae-yi’s own family history turns out to be tangled up in the club far more directly than she ever suspected.

Queen of Masks Episode 16 — Every Mask Off EP 16
Every Mask Off
Jun 13, 2023
The finale settles its accounts fast — Kang Il-goo’s empire collapses, and it’s his own most trusted man who ends up delivering the final blow, a fittingly bitter irony for a season built entirely on people betraying the people closest to them. Do Jae-yi, Go Yoo-na, Yoon Hae-mi, and Joo Yu-jung each get their own version of closure, none of it clean, all of it earned across sixteen episodes of exactly the kind of betrayal the title promised.

🏁 Ending Explained

The finale, explained in full. Spoilers ahead.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of Queen of Masks. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

The Angel Club’s real mastermind is Do Jae-yi’s own secret father The literal answer: Kang Il-goo, a powerful conglomerate chairman revealed as Do Jae-yi’s undisclosed biological father, built and ran the Angel Club — the masked members’ society whose crimes sit underneath the entire season — and personally orchestrated the deaths of Gi Do-shik, Song Jae-hyuk, and Choi Kang-hoo to keep it hidden. Every murder the show spent sixteen episodes treating as a separate mystery turns out to trace back to the same man.

Queen of Masks (2023) — Kang Il-goo is revealed as the Angel Club mastermind

It lands hard specifically because of who’s finding it out. Do Jae-yi spent the whole season believing she was investigating a corrupt institution from the outside — copying files, gathering evidence, treating the Angel Club as an enemy she could someday expose and walk away from. Finding out the person she was actually building a case against shares her blood reframes every earlier scene of her quiet, careful ambition as something closer to inheritance than choice.

Kang Il-goo doesn’t survive his own reveal His own most trusted man is the one who kills him — not Do Jae-yi, not the police, not any of the four women he spent the season trying to control. It’s a deliberately bitter final image for a show about betrayal: even the man at the very top of it gets taken out by exactly the kind of loyalty he never actually earned from anyone underneath him.

Queen of Masks (2023) — Kang Il-goo's downfall in the finale

That irony extends to the season’s entire structure. Every relationship the show built — friendship, marriage, employment, family — turned out to be transactional dressed up as loyalty somewhere along the way, and Kang Il-goo’s death by his own lieutenant’s hand is just the last, cleanest example of that pattern finally paying off against the person who assumed he was safest from it.

The KDW verdict Queen of Masks stacks its twists high enough that the finale has a genuine amount of ground to cover, and mostly it clears that bar — the Kang Il-goo reveal recontextualizes the whole season rather than just capping it off. It’s not a tidy ending, but this was never a tidy show, and four women getting an earned, if imperfect, reckoning after sixteen episodes of betrayal is exactly the payoff the premise promised.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our genuine take on whether it’s worth your time, and who it’s for.

🎭 Masks Off 👑 Four Queens, No Kings 🔪 Betrayal With Receipts 🏛️ Old Money, Older Secrets

What keeps Queen of Masks watchable even when its plot gets top-heavy is that all four leads play the material completely straight — Kim Sun-a especially, who never lets Do Jae-yi’s public warmth and private calculation feel like two different performances stitched together. It’s the same trick that made Mask Girl so unsettling in its own way — a woman whose face and identity never quite match, and the show trusting the audience to sit with that discomfort instead of resolving it early.

Queen of Masks (2023) — cinematic still

The friendship-turned-warfare structure owes an obvious debt to The World of the Married‘s betrayal-as-melodrama formula, though Queen of Masks spreads that betrayal across four women instead of one marriage, which is both its biggest strength and the reason the back half occasionally struggles to give every thread equal weight.

The Angel Club itself is a genuinely effective villain concept — a crime that hides in plain sight because the people committing it are too rich and too connected to ever be suspected — but the show gets distracted from it often enough in the middle stretch that the finale’s reveal has to do more heavy lifting than it should. Sixteen episodes is a lot of runway for a mystery this focused; the show mostly earns it, but not without some drag along the way.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🎭 Anyone who wants their melodrama dense with secrets and unafraid of a real body count 👑 Fans of ensemble female leads carrying a soapy thriller on pure performance 🏛️ Viewers who like their villains hiding behind wealth and status instead of obvious menace

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Kim Sun-a’s performance holds the entire double-life premise together
The Angel Club gives the season a genuinely unsettling, class-driven antagonist
Four distinct women whose friendship never feels like a plot device even after it curdles

What to know first
The masked-club mystery the title promises gets sidelined for stretches in favor of other plotlines
Sixteen episodes is more than the central mystery strictly needs
Content leans dark — murder, sexual assault, and family betrayal are all central, not incidental

7.2 / 10— A soapy, twist-stacked melodrama that earns its finale even when the middle stretch makes you wait for it.
