Navier is the intelligent and elegant Empress of the Eastern Empire, living a peaceful but loveless marriage with Emperor Sovieshu — her childhood friend who promised never to take a concubine. That promise shatters when Sovieshu returns home with Rashta, a runaway slave he has fallen for, and begins pushing for a divorce so he can make her his new empress. Rather than accepting the humiliation quietly, Navier delivers a counter-move no one sees coming: she formally requests permission to remarry Prince Heinrey of the Western Kingdom.

What Navier doesn’t know is that Heinrey — charming, seemingly carefree, and politically sharp — has already fallen in love with her in secret, having encountered her while disguised as a bird through his shapeshifting ability. As Navier navigates palace betrayal, ruthless court politics, and an unexpected new alliance, the drama becomes a story about a woman who refuses to be discarded — and who walks out of one empire into something far more powerful on her own terms. Based on the globally popular webtoon by Alphatart, adapted for Disney+.

The Remarried Empress Episode 1 — The Runaway Slave EP 01
The Runaway Slave
Nov 4, 2026
Navier and Sovieshu have been friends since childhood, and he once promised her he would never keep a mistress the way his father did. The hunting festival tests that promise almost at once. A monstrous beast scatters the party, and a white bird with purple eyes appears to help Navier bring it down. Elsewhere in the forest, Sovieshu finds men abusing a runaway slave named Rashta, carries her out of it, and has her brought to the palace without a word to his wife.

The Remarried Empress Episode 2 — Heinrey Is Coming EP 02
Heinrey Is Coming
Nov 4, 2026
Rashta is no longer a rescued stranger but a woman under the emperor’s protection, and Navier is the one expected to accept it. Court rules complicate things: a mistress needs a noble family behind her, and only Lady Albani is willing to adopt Rashta, with plans for a girl she can steer. Rashta greets the empress as a sister, all wide eyes. Meanwhile the palace buzzes over Prince Heinrey’s coming visit, and the white bird keeps delivering messages from an admirer who won’t give his name.

The Remarried Empress Episode 3 — The New Year's Ceremony EP 03
The New Year’s Ceremony
Nov 4, 2026
Nobles from neighboring realms gather for the New Year’s ceremony, and Prince Heinrey finally arrives at the Eastern court in human form. Rashta, emboldened, takes up more room in front of the court than anyone expected. The ballroom does the talking: Sovieshu holds out his hand to Rashta while Navier stands beside him, until Heinrey steps in and asks her to waltz. Navier has no idea the man in her arms is the bird she has been confiding in. The close-ups on their hands carry the whole scene.

The Remarried Empress Episode 4 — Plotting Chaos EP 04
Plotting Chaos
Nov 4, 2026
Navier and Heinrey grow closer, and the prince’s playful persistence starts to wear on her composure in a way she doesn’t mind. Rashta’s innocence begins to look like a performance: she sets out to throw the palace into an uproar, with Albani pulling strings behind her and Viscount Lotteshu on her trail. The episode ends hinting there is more to the runaway slave than the emperor’s affection, and that Navier’s calm will soon be tested from several sides.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest opinion — and the kind of viewer who’ll love it most.

👑 Regal Power 🐦 Secret Magic 💔 Betrayal 🌹 Slow-Burn Romance ⚔️ Palace Chess

The premise alone is enough to hook you: an empress gets served a divorce notice and instead of crying herself to sleep, she hands back a remarriage request. That is the entire personality of The Remarried Empress in one move — composed, calculated, and devastating. The webtoon by Alphatart built its massive international fanbase on exactly this energy, and with Shin Min-a in the lead, the adaptation has the casting to match it. She has always been best when playing characters who hold everything together quietly while the world unravels around them, and Navier is written precisely for that register. Lee Jong-suk as Heinrey adds a charming mystery that works well against Shin Min-a’s stillness, while Ju Ji-hoon — who rarely plays a role this morally compromised — gives Sovieshu the complexity the story needs. This is a drama about institutions, not just individuals: who gets to keep their title, who loses it, and what it costs to walk away on your own terms. With Crash Landing on You still the gold standard for historical-flavoured romance and palace-set dramas increasingly dominant on Disney+, this one arrives with serious weight behind it.

The Remarried Empress (2026) — cinematic still

The shapeshifting element — Heinrey secretly transforms into a bird — is the one aspect that could either charm or alienate viewers depending on their appetite for fantasy. In the webtoon, it reads as a delightful secret that recontextualizes their relationship. On screen, it will depend entirely on execution. Director Jo Soo-won and his team have the budget and the Disney+ platform to do something genuinely cinematic with it, but fantasy beats in live-action K-drama have historically been a coin flip. If the bird sequences are handled with the same elegance as the rest of the production design, this will be one of those dramas people recommend for years. If they’re clunky, they could undercut an otherwise sharp political story. Either way, the palace intrigue at the core — the factions, the betrayals, the cold war between Navier and Rashta — is strong enough to carry the series on its own.

As a pre-release post, we’ll reserve final judgment for after the episodes air. What’s clear already is that The Remarried Empress is one of the most complete packages of the 2026 K-drama calendar: iconic source material, a lead actress doing career-defining work, and a platform with the reach to make it a global conversation starter. If Navier’s first move is asking to remarry someone else, you can only imagine what the rest of her game looks like.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍

What to know first
