A Trap Called Desire

Jang Seo-hee has spent most of her career as the wronged woman in this exact time slot, which is why casting her as the one doing the wronging pays off so quickly. Her Mi-ran does not chew scenery. She modulates — a foundation director’s practiced softness in public, a flat administrative calm in private — and the switch between the two happens fast enough that you catch her deciding to make it. KBS2’s evening block has been on a strong run in this register lately; Pearl in Red already proved there is an audience willing to give a daily drama a hundred nights.

The structural choice worth watching is the timing of the reveal. Most revenge plots would hold the mother-daughter connection until the fifty-episode mark and build toward it. Putting it in the premiere means Eun-seol spends the next several months chasing a truth the audience already holds, and every scene between the two women carries a weight only we can see. Perfect Marriage Revenge ran a compressed twelve-episode version of that same dramatic irony. Stretched over a hundred episodes, it turns into something closer to a slow pressure test.

One episode is not enough to know whether the show can hold that pressure. Daily dramas live or die on their middle stretch, and the middle here runs roughly eighty episodes long. What the premiere does establish is a clean separation between a secret the characters are keeping from each other and a secret the audience is keeping for them.
