Cha Yu-ri has been dead for five years, watching her husband and daughter from the sidelines the way only a ghost can — close enough to see everything, too far to change any of it. Just as she finally decides it’s time to stop lingering and move on, the deities running the afterlife do the opposite of letting her go: they hand her a living, breathing body and 49 days to reclaim her place in a family that has, against every instinct she has left, kept living without her.

The catch is the one thing no fantasy loophole can undo — her husband Cho Gang-hwa has remarried, and the woman raising her daughter now is not a villain to be defeated but a genuinely loving stepmother with her own fears and blind spots. Hi Bye, Mama! spends its 49 days less on ‘will she get her old life back’ and more on a harder question: what does a mother actually owe the family she can no longer be part of?

📺 Episode Guide

Spoiler-light recaps — enough to remember where you left off, nothing that ruins the ride.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 1 — Life Is Full of Unpredictable Surprises EP 01
Life Is Full of Unpredictable Surprises
Feb 22, 2020
Cha Yu-ri has spent five years as a ghost, invisible to everyone but the daughter she left behind, and has finally decided it’s time to let go. Instead, the universe has other plans: she wakes up breathing, warm, and horrified to discover the deities running the afterlife have just handed her body back. She has exactly 49 days to find her rightful place in the world of the living — nobody bothers explaining what that means, least of all to a woman who’s been dead longer than she’s had to be alive again.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 2 — Forgotten Season EP 02
Forgotten Season
Feb 23, 2020
Cho Gang-hwa nearly falls apart at the sight of a wife he watched get buried five years ago, standing in front of him very much alive and just as confused as he is about the rules of her own resurrection. Yu-ri has 49 days to make her case for staying, except she has no idea where to start — and the problem gets worse fast once her daughter, Seo-woo, goes missing on the exact day her mother comes back.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 3 — Realizing the Beauty of Life Is Only Possible After Death EP 03
Realizing the Beauty of Life Is Only Possible After Death
Feb 29, 2020
Gang-hwa still hasn’t found the nerve to tell his dead wife he’s remarried, which becomes a much bigger problem the moment Yu-ri starts noticing exactly how protective she still feels over Seo-woo. With ghosts drifting in and out of her daughter’s preschool, Yu-ri does the only thing a determined mother — living or otherwise — would do: she gets herself hired there.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 4 — There Is Nothing That Won't Happen to Me EP 04
There Is Nothing That Won’t Happen to Me
Mar 1, 2020
Yu-ri’s new job puts her in the same room as Oh Min-jeong, the woman raising her daughter now, who can’t shake the feeling she’s seen this new hire’s face somewhere before. Meanwhile, Yu-ri finally learns the truth about the quiet, watchful child-ghost who’s been trailing Seo-woo around — and it’s sadder than she expected.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 5 — Every Moment When Chance Turns Into Fate EP 05
Every Moment When Chance Turns Into Fate
Mar 7, 2020
Being visibly, physically human again causes chaos among the ghosts still haunting the columbarium where Yu-ri’s own remains sit — a body doesn’t just vanish from the afterlife without people noticing. Back among the living, Yu-ri comes dangerously close to blowing her cover in front of both Gang-hwa and Min-jeong on the very same afternoon.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 6 — Even in the Face of Death, Family Is Still My Number One EP 06
Even in the Face of Death, Family Is Still My Number One
Mar 8, 2020
Min-jeong wakes up with an unexplained wound on her face and a decision she’s been avoiding weighing heavier than ever, while Gang-hwa’s professional life catches up with him in the form of disciplinary action at the hospital. Everyone in this family is quietly falling apart in a different room of the same house.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 7 — Where Flowers Bloom and Fall EP 07
Where Flowers Bloom and Fall
Mar 14, 2020
Yu-ri crosses paths with Min-jeong under circumstances neither woman expected, and the show lets the two people who’ve unknowingly shared one husband circle each other with a strange, careful curiosity instead of open hostility. Elsewhere, granting a dying wish for the ghost boy’s family puts Yu-ri in a position she didn’t see coming.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 8 — People Who Can't Say Goodbye EP 08
People Who Can’t Say Goodbye
Mar 15, 2020
A ghost father and his daughter give Yu-ri an early, painful preview of exactly what she’s trying to avoid becoming — someone who never got the chance to say goodbye properly. Then she crosses paths with the one person who absolutely should not be able to see her, and the mystery of who else can perceive ghosts widens.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 9 — Goodbye and Hello to Your Light EP 09
Goodbye and Hello to Your Light
Mar 21, 2020
With half of her 49 days already spent, Yu-ri throws herself into getting an unwanted spirit out of Seo-woo’s orbit by volunteering to babysit her own daughter under a different name. Gang-hwa, oblivious to who’s actually looking after his child, manages to make things worse with one spectacularly bad decision.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 10 — Your Place Where I Cannot Reach EP 10
Your Place Where I Cannot Reach
Mar 22, 2020
Time is visibly running out, and Yu-ri narrows her focus to the two people she came back for — Seo-woo, and more surprisingly, Min-jeong herself. On a separate front, Gang-hwa’s path crosses again with Jeon Eun-suk, reopening a thread from the family’s past nobody had finished dealing with.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 11 — The Share of Life Given to Me EP 11
The Share of Life Given to Me
Mar 28, 2020
An unwelcome visitor rattles Ms. Mi-dong badly enough to disrupt the fragile peace Yu-ri has built, while Yu-ri, Min-jeong, and Go Hyeon-jeong finally run out of patience with a clique of bullying preschool moms making everyone’s life harder. It’s the rare episode where the women in this story get to be allies instead of rivals.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 12 — The Days I Was Forgotten EP 12
The Days I Was Forgotten
Mar 29, 2020
Gang-hwa’s entire understanding of the last several weeks cracks open the moment Seo-woo says her mother’s name out loud — a name she was never supposed to know. Yu-ri, meanwhile, has bigger problems than being found out: an exorcist has taken a very specific interest in getting rid of her.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 13 — A Story I Could Not See EP 13
A Story I Could Not See
Apr 11, 2020
The truth finally lands on Gang-hwa: the new hire, the babysitter, the woman he couldn’t stop noticing — it’s all been Yu-ri, present for weeks while he had no idea. He resolves to come clean to Min-jeong before anyone else can do it for him, which is easier decided than done in a neighborhood already gossiping about the three of them.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 14 — It's Not Your Fault EP 14
It’s Not Your Fault
Apr 12, 2020
Stepping back into an operating room isn’t something Gang-hwa can just will himself through, and the episode lets his professional fear sit uncomfortably close to his personal one. After a day spent with Hyeon-jeong’s family, Yu-ri arrives at a realization that finally reframes everything she’s been fighting for.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 15 — My Life's Tomorrow EP 15
My Life’s Tomorrow
Apr 18, 2020
If Yu-ri wants any version of staying alive, she has to return to the exact place she was brought back from — a rule nobody bothered explaining until now, with days instead of weeks left to act on it. Gang-hwa throws himself into making that happen at the same moment Min-jeong quietly tells him she’s leaving.

Hi Bye, Mama! Episode 16 — Petals Fall, But the Flower Endures EP 16
Petals Fall, But the Flower Endures
Apr 19, 2020
The real reason Yu-ri was ever brought back — not a loophole, not a curse, but her own mother’s desperate prayer to see her one more time — finally comes to light as her 49 days run out. What’s left is the choice the whole season has been building toward, and Hi Bye, Mama! doesn’t let her, or the audience, off easy for it.

🏁 Ending Explained

The finale, explained in full. Spoilers ahead.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of Hi Bye, Mama!. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

What actually happened Yu-ri learns the truth behind her own resurrection: she wasn’t cursed back to life or given a loophole to exploit, she came back because her own mother prayed desperately for one more chance to see her daughter. With that truth in hand and her 49 days almost gone, Yu-ri makes the harder call herself — she chooses to return to the afterlife permanently, because staying alive would mean Seo-woo keeps the ability to see ghosts for the rest of her life.

Hi Bye, Mama! (2020) — Yu-ri learns the truth about her return

What makes this land harder than a simple sad ending is that Yu-ri isn’t forced out by a rule she can’t escape — by this point she has genuine agency, real options, and people who want her to stay. She lets go anyway, because the alternative costs her daughter a normal childhood. It’s a mother’s choice dressed up as a fantasy-plot resolution, which is exactly the kind of trick this show has been pulling all season.

Gang-hwa and Min-jeong Yu-ri’s return forces an already strained marriage into the open, and Min-jeong spends much of the back half seriously considering divorce rather than competing with a ghost for her own husband’s attention. The finale jumps forward and shows Gang-hwa and Min-jeong reconciled, raising Seo-woo together — not as a consolation prize, but as the family Yu-ri spent her 49 days convincing herself actually deserved to stay whole.

Hi Bye, Mama! (2020) — Gang-hwa and Min-jeong raise Seo-woo together

Seo-woo herself grows up no longer able to see ghosts — the clearest sign that Yu-ri’s sacrifice actually worked — and the finale gives her one last quiet gift as an adult: a note from Yu-ri, tucked away with an old photograph, discovered long after she needed her birth mother to explain anything out loud.

The KDW verdict Hi Bye, Mama! earns its tears by refusing the easy version of this story at every turn — no villainized stepmother, no rule-bending happy reunion, just a woman who gets an impossible second chance and uses it to make sure the people she loves don’t need her anymore. That’s a harder note to end on than a simple reunion, and it’s the reason this one still gets recommended years later.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Worth the watch? Our honest answer, and who it’s aimed at.

👻 49 Days to Live Again 🤱 Motherhood Without Ownership 💔 No Villain, Just Grief 🌸 A Goodbye That Sticks

Hi Bye, Mama! understands something that a lot of afterlife dramas miss: the rules of the fantasy only matter if they’re forcing a real emotional choice underneath. The 49-day countdown isn’t a ticking clock for suspense, it’s a structure that keeps pushing Yu-ri toward the same unbearable question every single week — how much of this family is still hers to claim? It’s the same trick Goblin pulled off a few years earlier — treat the supernatural rulebook as a metaphor for mortality, not just a plot device — except here it’s aimed at motherhood instead of romance.

Hi Bye, Mama! (2020) — cinematic still

Kim Tae-hee plays Yu-ri’s grief and comic timing as the same muscle, which keeps the show from ever feeling tonally schizophrenic even when it swings from slapstick ghost-hunting to a mother watching her own funeral photo on a shelf. Just as important is what the writers refuse to do with Oh Min-jeong: she’s never flattened into a jealous obstacle, she’s a genuinely good stepmother with her own fear of losing everything, treated with the same warmth Reply 1988 extends to every single person in its ensemble, no exceptions made for who’s technically in the way of the plot.

The show does occasionally let its comedic subplots — bullying preschool moms, a jealous exorcist — run a little longer than the emotional core needs them to, and the child-ghost storyline sometimes competes for runtime it probably didn’t need. But those are minor complaints against a finale that has the nerve to end on a genuine, difficult goodbye instead of bending its own rules to hand Yu-ri a happier ending than the story actually earned.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
👻 Viewers who want a fantasy premise that’s actually about something, not just a gimmick 🤱 Anyone who wants a motherhood story that doesn’t need a villain to have stakes 😭 Fans of a good, earned cry by the finale — bring tissues for episode 16

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
•Kim Tae-hee balances comedy and grief in the same performance without either undercutting the other
•Refuses to villainize the second wife, giving the ‘family’ at the center real emotional complexity
•The 49-day structure keeps every episode purposeful instead of stalling for time

What to know first
•Some comedic subplots (bullying moms, the exorcist) run longer than the core story strictly needs
•The child-ghost storyline occasionally pulls focus from the central family
•The ending is a genuine tearjerker — this isn’t a show that bends its rules for a tidy happy ending

8.5 / 10— A fantasy premise used in service of a real, difficult story about what a mother is willing to let go of.
