The story is set in the late Three Kingdoms era, when Silla fought Goguryeo, Baekje and Tang in turn and its kings and generals worked toward unifying the Korean Peninsula. Lee Hyun-wook plays Kim Beop-min, the eldest son of Kim Chun-chu and a nephew of the general Kim Yu-sin, who is the man history remembers as King Munmu.

The cast splits along the war’s two sides. On the Silla side, Kim Kang-woo plays Kim Chun-chu, the future King Taejong Muyeol, and Park Sung-woong plays Kim Yu-sin; on the Goguryeo side, Jang Hyuk plays the military strongman Yeon Gaesomun. Choi Ye-bin appears as Empress Wu Zetian of Tang. Kim Ri-heon and Hong Jin-yi wrote it, Kim Young-jo and Gu Seong-joon direct, and KBS2 airs it on Saturdays and Sundays starting November 14, 2026.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Straight talk — our real opinion, and the viewer it’s made for.

⚔️ Unification War 👑 King Munmu 🏯 Three Kingdoms 🎬 Epic Sageuk

Silla is usually the quiet winner in Korean history lessons, and this series wants to show how loud that win was. It puts Silla, Goguryeo, Baekje and Tang on one board and follows the people who moved the pieces. Fans of Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth already know the Silla court from the youth side; this one is about the generation that fought the actual wars.

Sword & Silence (2026) — cinematic still

Jang Hyuk as Yeon Gaesomun and Park Sung-woong as Kim Yu-sin are the casting that makes people look twice, since each is a strong-willed presence on opposite sides. If you want another Korean costume drama about a kingdom under pressure, Queen Woo covers Goguryeo’s earlier history.

Nothing has aired, so this is anticipation, not a verdict. The only trailer is a Korean-subtitled KBS teaser; we will swap in an English one if it appears and add recaps as the episodes air.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍

⚔️ Viewers who like large-scale war and court sageuk 👑 Anyone curious how the Korean Peninsula’s first unification actually played out 🎬 Fans of Jang Hyuk, Kim Kang-woo or Park Sung-woong

⚖️ Final Verdict

What works

•A deep veteran ensemble on both sides of the war

•Four rival powers on one map: Silla, Goguryeo, Baekje and Tang

•28 episodes to cover the whole unification arc

What to know first

•Nothing has aired yet, so this is a preview

•Premieres Saturday, November 14, 2026 on KBS2, with new episodes on Saturdays and Sundays

•The current trailer is a Korean-subtitled KBS teaser

Anticipation Pick— A promising epic; the verdict comes once the war actually starts airing.
