📖 The Story

No spoilers ahead — just enough to see if it fits your taste.

Lee Hak-sung is a brilliant mathematician who defected from North Korea in search of academic freedom. In South Korea he hides who he is and works as a night security guard at an elite private school for the top one percent of students. He is cold, curt and avoided by the pupils, which suits a man who cannot afford attention.

In Our Prime (2022) — A security guard in uniform peers over his glasses beside a glowing lamp in In Our Prime

The film’s trailer gives a sense of what he is hiding: a mathematician in the North who was said to have proved the Riemann hypothesis. At the school he is simply the guard on the night shift, passing the evenings alone with his notes and his equations.

Han Ji-woo is the opposite kind of loner. He is an outcast in a prestigious school built around grades, and he is falling behind. He goes to the school’s security guard, Hak-sung, and asks him to teach him math and to become his friend.

In Our Prime (2022) — A guard writes at a cluttered desk covered in notes in In Our Prime

The lessons that follow are the heart of the film. He tells Ji-woo that calculation is not the point and that memorizing a formula teaches nothing. He wants the boy to think his way to an answer, and the old man and the teenager slowly stop being a guard and a student and become something closer to friends.

In Our Prime (2022) — A student and the guard sit across a table in a study room in In Our Prime

Ji-woo changes. A boy who was falling behind in a school built around results starts to learn that math is a way of thinking, not just something to memorize, and the guard gains a friend he never expected to have.

Then something happens at school that puts the friendship at risk. Rumors spread about a leaked exam, Ji-woo is the one blamed, and the secret Hak-sung has guarded for years is suddenly in danger of coming out. Protecting the boy now means exposing himself.

In Our Prime (2022) — A smiling man in a vest sits on a sofa in a study in In Our Prime

The last act asks whether a man who has spent so long hiding will step into the open for someone else. It is a story about teaching, trust and the cost of speaking up, built around two people who each need the other to move forward.

🏁 Ending Explained

Hak-sung steps into the open The turning point comes when Hak-sung’s identity is exposed and Ji-woo is accused over the leaked exam questions and faces expulsion from the school. Hak-sung, who has spent the film hiding, chooses to speak. He appears in front of the public at an awards ceremony and defends Ji-woo.

In Our Prime (2022) — A guard and a young woman share a bright moment in a laboratory in In Our Prime

His defense works. Ji-woo is not expelled from the school.

Two paths after the storm Hak-sung does not stay in the spotlight. After he has done what he came to do, he leaves public attention and goes on to live a quiet life away from it, the one thing a man in his position had always wanted.

In Our Prime (2022) — A student and an older man walk across a lit bridge at night in In Our Prime

Ji-woo continues on his own path in the world of mathematics. What the old guard gave him was not a method for passing exams but a habit of thinking, and that is the part he takes forward.

What the ending means In Our Prime ends on trust rather than triumph: a teacher who risks everything for a student, and a student who carries the lesson on. Reports of the film’s final scenes are limited, so some finer details may differ from how other summaries tell them, but this is the core of how the story resolves.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Worth watching or not — our honest read, and who it’s for.

🎬 Director Park Dong-hun Known for: Park Dong-hun directed In Our Prime and co-wrote it with Lee Yong-jae. 🧮 Math as Friendship👨‍🏫 Mentor and Student🤫 A Secret Past🎬 Quiet School Drama

In Our Prime works because it keeps its focus on two people. Choi Min-sik plays Hak-sung as a man who has learned to be small and silent, and Kim Dong-hwi makes Ji-woo’s loneliness believable. The teaching scenes are where the film is at its best.

The school-pressure storyline and the leaked-exam plot are familiar, and some supporting characters are drawn lightly. But the film never loses sight of its idea that thinking matters more than memorizing.

It is a modest, sincere drama that rewards patience. Go in without spoilers if you can.
