Park Min-jae (Choo Young-woo) was supposed to be a competitive swimmer. Then illness cost him his leg, and the pool stopped being an option — so he rebuilt himself instead as a PhD student in a university robotics lab, trading one kind of discipline for another. Lim Yu-jin (Kim So-hyun) is running from a quieter kind of loss: a clothing and textiles degree she can no longer see herself finishing, and no clear idea of what to do next. When she lands in Min-jae’s lab as the newest, most lost member of the team, two people who’ve both had to start over find that rebuilding a life is a lot less lonely with company.

Between Steps is the final drama shot by the late director Ahn Pan-seok, whose credits — Something in the Rain, One Spring Night, The Midnight Romance in Hagwon — made him one of Korean TV’s most reliable hands at slow, adult romance that trusts silence as much as dialogue. The early trailers suggest something a little different from his usual register: bright, bubbly, cheerful, a campus love story about two people learning to want things again rather than a moody meditation on heartbreak. Premiering October 5 on ENA and streaming on Disney+, it’s a modest, big-swing-free anticipation pick — the appeal isn’t spectacle, it’s watching two careful actors and a filmmaker who understood tenderness put together twelve episodes about getting back up.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Is it worth your time? Here’s our honest take, and who it suits best.

🏊 Ex-Swimmer, New Path 🤖 Robotics Lab Romance 🎓 Lost and Finding Herself 🎬 A Director’s Final Story

Ahn Pan-seok built a career on adults who fall in love slowly and quietly, and The Midnight Romance in Hagwon is the clearest recent example — two wary, wounded people circling each other for episodes before anything is said out loud. Between Steps, made as his final work, swaps that show’s hagwon cynicism for a university robotics lab and a noticeably gentler premise: not two people protecting themselves from getting hurt again, but two people who already got hurt, and are figuring out how to want something again anyway.

Between Steps (2026) — cinematic still

The pairing of a physical loss (Min-jae’s leg, his swimming career) with an academic one (Yu-jin’s abandoned major) is a smart bit of structural symmetry — it lets the show treat both kinds of derailment as equally real without ranking one as more tragic than the other. It’s the same instinct that made Record of Youth work as a portrait of young people whose careers don’t go the way they planned — the drama is less interested in the plan falling apart than in what they build next.

None of this is confirmed by anything but a synopsis and two teasers yet. What’s confirmed is the pedigree: a director whose entire body of work is about the unglamorous, unhurried work of learning to trust someone again, closing his career on a story that finally lets his leads win a little.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🩹 Viewers who want a romance about healing and rebuilding rather than obstacles and betrayal 🐢 Fans of Ahn Pan-seok’s slow-burn, adult-toned love stories who want to see his final work 🎓 Anyone drawn to campus-and-grad-school settings where the drama comes from the characters, not the plot

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
A rebuilding-your-life premise that treats physical and academic setbacks as equally worth taking seriously
Choo Young-woo and Kim So-hyun both have the quiet-chemistry range this kind of slow-burn needs
The final work of a director with a genuine, proven touch for unhurried, adult romance

What to know first
Anticipation Pick — no episodes have aired yet, so pacing and chemistry are still unknown
Teasers suggest a brighter, more cheerful tone than this director’s usual moody register
Airs on ENA in Korea, with Disney+ covering the international release

Anticipation Pick— A quiet, healing campus romance from a director who spent his career proving that slow love stories can hit just as hard as loud ones.
