Eun-ho (Kim Hye-yoon) is a nine-tailed fox — a gumiho — who has spent nine centuries doing exactly what she wants. She grants wishes for a living, accumulates wealth, and carefully avoids doing anything genuinely good so she never has to become human. Immortality suits her just fine. She has no interest in feelings, in consequences, or in a soccer player named Kang Si-yeol.
Then one careless wish sets off a chain reaction that scrambles fates, strips away her tails one by one, and turns her into an ordinary human. Si-yeol (Lomon) — narcissistic, brilliant, and suddenly living someone else’s life — is the last person she’d choose to be tangled up with. And yet. A 900-year-old creature who built her existence around avoiding love finds herself, for the first time, losing the game she invented.

🏁 Ending Explained
How No Tail to Tell ends — and what it all means. Full spoilers below.
Si-yeol takes a bullet meant for Eun-ho. Episode 11 ends with Lee Yoon shooting Si-yeol at close range after Eun-ho loses her remaining powers. Episode 12 opens in crisis: Si-yeol is rushed to hospital, his organs failing. The doctors give him little chance of surviving the night. Eun-ho, standing in the hospital corridor, remembers the warning she received long ago — remain human, or be annihilated. Neither option includes saving him. She starts looking for a third option.

Eun-ho’s sacrifice resets fate entirely. She brings Woo-seok to Namsan fortress wall — the location from her recurring premonition — and asks him to stab her with the Sajin Ritual Blade. Woo-seok understands what it means and does it. The moment the blade enters her, everything she changed begins to unravel. The fate-swap reverses: Si-yeol and Woo-seok switch back. Suddenly it’s Si-yeol holding the dagger sticking out of Eun-ho’s chest — wearing exactly the pink sweater from her dream, exactly as she foresaw. Her premonition was never a threat. It was a promise.
Her selfless act powers Geum-ho’s final transformation. The spiritual force released by Eun-ho’s sacrifice floods Geum-ho’s fox bead, pushing her from eight tails to nine. Do-cheol makes one final move — but a nine-tailed Geum-ho is no longer something he can threaten. She defeats him completely. Lee Yoon, stripped of Eun-ho’s interference in the timeline, faces ordinary human consequences and ends up in prison regardless. The people whose lives Eun-ho’s careless wishes had destroyed — including the driver whose daughter she helped — are restored to their original fates.

Nine years pass, and Si-yeol cannot forget her. After the time skip, the world has moved on: Si-yeol has had a full professional football career and retired. Woo-seok runs a restaurant. Everyone seems to have found peace. Everyone except Si-yeol, who quietly knows Eun-ho is somewhere nearby. He tests this — somewhat ridiculously — by nearly falling off a rooftop, and she catches him. The reunion is instant. She has been watching over him for about a year, too afraid to come back. He argues that argument down in about thirty seconds.
The finale chooses bittersweet over tragic. Eun-ho returns as a full nine-tailed fox — on her own terms, choosing this life rather than defaulting to it, for the first time in nine centuries. What she can’t outrun is the math: Si-yeol will age; she won’t. The drama acknowledges this in her final premonition, which shows her at Si-yeol’s grave in the year 2096. He will have died just shy of 98. She already knows how it ends. She chooses it anyway. Choosing your own nature, fully and without apology, is its own kind of becoming.

What works about the ending — and what doesn’t. The finale’s first act is efficient and emotionally complete. The sacrifice-and-reset pays off the Sajin Blade mythology in a satisfying way, and the premonition’s recontextualization is the show’s best structural move. What the ending can’t fully repair is the rush of the villain conclusion and the underdeveloped mythology around Lord Pagun. Viewers who bounced in the first four episodes will never see this — which is the show’s real problem. For everyone who stayed, the final image of two people choosing each other with clear eyes lands exactly the way a slow-burn romance should.
✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take
Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.
🦊 Quirky Fantasy
😂 Genuinely Funny
🐢 Slow Burn Romance
🌸 Comfort Watch
Kim Hye-yoon doesn’t play Eun-ho as charming — she plays her as actively difficult. A creature who has spent nine centuries curating a life of maximum pleasure and zero responsibility, Eun-ho is bratty, transactional, and genuinely funny in the way only someone with nine lifetimes of practice at being annoying can be. Coming off Lovely Runner, it’s a bold pivot — no warmth offered upfront, no easy likability to coast on. The performance works because Hye-yoon commits to the arrogance entirely, trusting that the cracks will come when they need to. And when they do — particularly that episode 11 breakdown — the payoff is real.

The chemistry between Hye-yoon and Lomon is divisive, and the division is fair. The drama takes its time letting them actually like each other — four episodes of bickering before anything softens, eight before anything resembling romance. Viewers who bounced early weren’t wrong to bounce; the opening stretch is genuinely slow and the pacing in the middle is uneven. But the bet the show is making — that the eventual warmth hits harder because it was withheld — pays off more than it doesn’t. Lomon’s Si-yeol is a better character than the show initially advertises: the narcissism peels back in layers, and by the end he’s doing nuanced, quietly emotional work that All of Us Are Dead never asked of him.
The script has real structural issues — the first four episodes move at the pace of a story that forgot it only has twelve — and the villain’s mythology, while conceptually interesting, gets resolved in a rush that the finale can’t fully paper over. This is not the gumiho drama that will replace My Roommate Is a Gumiho in anyone’s rotation. But it is something else: a show that argues, persistently and without apology, that choosing your own nature is its own kind of becoming. Easier to appreciate than to love — but appreciating it is enough.
