Our Blues is an omnibus-format drama set against the stunning backdrop of Jeju Island — a place where the sea holds secrets, and everyone on its shores is carrying something. Rather than following a single pair of leads, the drama cycles through five interlocking story arcs: a fish market owner who reconnects with her first love after decades apart, a gruff boat captain who falls for the most headstrong haenyeo diver in the diving group, two high school students who discover an unplanned pregnancy and must figure out what comes next, a woman quietly battling depression who returns to face a man from her painful past, and an itinerant vendor with a cold fury toward his dying mother — a grudge he has nursed for thirty years and may never fully set down.

What makes Our Blues extraordinary isn’t its plot — it’s its insistence that every single character, regardless of age, background, or screen time, is the protagonist of their own story. From the teenagers scrambling to buy a pregnancy test to the elderly haenyeo women who have watched each other age for decades, writer Noh Hee-kyung gives every arc its own emotional logic and its own kind of heartbreak. The drama doesn’t ask you to root for one couple. It asks you to recognize yourself somewhere in the crowd.

📺 Episode Guide

Spoiler-light recaps — five storylines, twenty episodes, one island that holds them all.

Our Blues Episode 1 — Han-su and Eun-hui 1
EP 01
First Love, Old Wounds
April 9, 2022 · tvN
Choi Han-su, a bank manager drowning in debt, leaves Seoul for a posting in his Jeju hometown. At a class reunion, he reconnects with Jung Eun-hui — the fish market owner who was once his first love. Han-su is still married and still hiding everything. The episode does the work of establishing not just two people, but the entire ecosystem of their old town, old friendships, and old unfinished business.

Our Blues Episode 2 — Han-su and Eun-hui 2
EP 02
The Invitation
April 9, 2022 · tvN
Han-su pushes for a private trip to Mokpo and Eun-hui hesitates — he is a married man. Her friends begin circling, suspicious of what he is actually after. The episode captures that specific torture of old feelings that never fully died, and of the people around you who can see the danger more clearly than you can.

Our Blues Episode 3 — Han-su and Eun-hui 3
EP 03
The Truth About Han-su
April 16, 2022 · tvN
Eun-hui goes on the overnight trip. Her friends dig deeper and Han-su’s financial secrets collapse into the open — he has sold his house, borrowed heavily, and is far more desperate than he let on. Devastated, Eun-hui wires him the 200 million won he needs. He returns it. Han-su walks away, back to his family, back to Seoul. It is a quiet ending for a arc that could have dragged — and it is the right one.

Our Blues Episode 4 — Yeong-ok and Jeong-jun 1
EP 04
The Diver Nobody Likes
April 16, 2022 · tvN
The story pivots to Lee Yeong-ok, a haenyeo diver with a reputation and a secret. Boat captain Park Jeong-jun quietly begins to fall for her — intervening when another captain harasses her, watching her in the water with something that looks a lot like care. Han Ji-min and Kim Woo-bin have immediate, unforced chemistry. The episode plants the mystery of what Yeong-ok is hiding without overplaying it.

Our Blues Episode 5 — Yeong-ju and Jung-hyeon 1
EP 05
The Pregnancy Test
April 23, 2022 · tvN
Bang Yeong-ju, the school’s top student, discovers she is six weeks pregnant with classmate Choi Jung-hyeon’s baby. What follows is one of the drama’s most achingly observed sequences: two teenagers trying to buy a pregnancy test without being recognized, navigating shame, fear, and the crushing weight of not knowing who to tell. It ends on a public-transport blurt that changes everything.

Our Blues Episode 6 — Dong-seok and Seon-a 1
EP 06
The Woman on the Ferry
April 23, 2022 · tvN
Lee Dong-seok — itinerant vendor, grudge-carrier, Lee Byung-hun at his most quietly ferocious — crosses paths on the Jeju ferry with his former love Uhm Seon-a. She is recently divorced, in custody danger, and barely holding on. The episode ends with Seon-a jumping from a breakwater — the haenyeo pulling her out of the sea. Lee Byung-hun watching from the dock. Neither says a word about what it means.

Our Blues Episode 7 — In-gwon and Ho-sik 1
EP 07
The Fight Between Fathers
April 30, 2022 · tvN
News of Yeong-ju’s pregnancy tears through the market and sets Jung In-gwon and Bang Ho-sik at each other’s throats — a lifetime of simmering rivalry boiling over into a street brawl. Yeong-ju and Jung-hyeon, meanwhile, decide they want to keep the baby and take shelter at Ok-dong’s house. The episode is messy and loud in the best way, with a tenderness buried just underneath.

Our Blues Episode 8 — In-gwon and Ho-sik 2
EP 08
Old Rivals, New Wounds
April 30, 2022 · tvN
The school tries to push Yeong-ju and Jung-hyeon out. In-gwon collapses at his apartment stairs and is rushed to hospital — acute diabetes, the kind of crisis that forces old enemies to pause. Ho-sik waits for him at the apartment door. Two stubborn men standing in a hallway, neither willing to say the word first. The scene is understated and completely devastating.

Our Blues Episode 9 — Dong-seok and Seon-a 2
EP 09
The Barred Window Room
May 7, 2022 · tvN
Dong-seok checks Seon-a into a motel with barred windows — gruff, practical, not romantic — and she opens up about her depression and how it began: her father driving his truck into the sea in front of her as a child. Shin Min-a handles this confession with extraordinary economy. She returns to Seoul for the custody hearing. Dong-seok goes back to Jeju and quietly starts renovating a house.

Our Blues Episode 10 — Dong-seok and Seon-a 3
EP 10
Losing
May 7, 2022 · tvN
The custody ruling goes against Seon-a. She loses her son. She decides to stay in Seoul anyway — to be close to him. Dong-seok returns to Jeju, quietly heartbroken, saying nothing about the house he has been fixing up for her. Back on the island, the older haenyeo women begin plotting to push Yeong-ok out of the diving group for good. Two different kinds of loneliness, handled with equal care.

Our Blues Episode 11 — Dong-seok and Seon-a / Yeong-ok and Jeong-jun
EP 11
What Mothers Know
May 14, 2022 · tvN
Dong-seok learns from a slip of the tongue that Ok-dong is terminally ill. He receives the news coldly and refuses to reconcile. Across the island, Jeong-jun convinces Yeong-ok to take a remote-island trip — the kind of day that turns something cautious into something real. Then Jeong-jun answers a mysterious call on Yeong-ok’s phone and the episode ends with the secret about to break.

Our Blues Episode 12 — Mi-ran and Eun-hui 1
EP 12
The Princess and Her Maid
May 14, 2022 · tvN
Hong Mi-ran arrives in Jeju claiming to have skipped her daughter’s graduation. Eun-hui picks her up at the airport with a wide smile and a private journal full of thirty years of unspoken resentment. Flashbacks unspool a history where Mi-ran was the princess and Eun-hui was the help. Uhm Jung-hwa plays sophistication and obliviousness with a precision that makes you feel for both women simultaneously.

Our Blues Episode 13 — Mi-ran and Eun-hui 2
EP 13
The Journal
May 21, 2022 · tvN
Mi-ran finds the journal. She reads it, confronts Eun-hui, and the friendship fractures in real time — slap, recrimination, the whole ugly reckoning. It is the kind of female friendship argument that K-drama rarely lets exist without tidying it up too quickly. Eun-hui follows Mi-ran to Seoul. What happens next is earned rather than convenient, and it is better for the messiness.

Our Blues Episode 14 — Yeong-ok, Jeong-jun, and Yeong-hui 1
EP 14
Yeong-ok’s Secret
May 21, 2022 · tvN
Yeong-ok’s secret arrives at the airport: her twin sister Lee Yeong-hui, who has Down syndrome, is visiting Jeju from her care home on the mainland. Yeong-ok has spent her entire adult life hiding this — not out of malice but out of a shame so old she stopped questioning it. Jeong-jun is waiting at the arrivals gate. His face when he realizes what he is seeing is the scene of the year.

Our Blues Episode 15 — Yeong-ok, Jeong-jun, and Yeong-hui 2
EP 15
The Sketchbooks
May 28, 2022 · tvN
Jeong-jun tries to befriend Yeong-hui. The week is chaotic, tender, and full of the kind of love that doesn’t announce itself. On Jeong-jun’s bus, Yeong-ok opens the sketchbooks Yeong-hui has kept for years — page after page of drawings of her sister, made in the institution in the dark. Han Ji-min breaks apart in this scene in a way that is genuinely hard to watch. Yeong-ok then texts Jeong-jun that she does not intend to marry.

Our Blues Episode 16 — Chun-hui and Eun-gi 1
EP 16
A Child Arrives
May 28, 2022 · tvN
Chun-hui’s son Man-su falls into a coma after a traffic accident. His young daughter Eun-gi is sent to Jeju with strict instructions not to tell grandmother what happened. What follows is one of the drama’s gentlest arcs: a willful, grieving child and an elderly woman who sees right through the lie, told through small daily acts of care. Ok-dong collapses again in the background — Kang Ok-dong’s time is running short.

Our Blues Episode 17 — Chun-hui and Eun-gi 2
EP 17
A Hundred Moons
June 4, 2022 · tvN
Ok-dong overhears the truth about Man-su and Chun-hui rushes to Mokpo. Before leaving, she tells her daughter-in-law to let Man-su die peacefully — a line delivered without melodrama that lands harder because of it. That night, Eun-hui and Jung-hyeon gather every boat on the Jeju water so little Eun-gi can see the “hundred moons” her father promised would grant her wishes. An image the drama earns completely.

Our Blues Episode 18 — Ok-dong and Dong-seok 1
EP 18
The Son Who Won’t Come
June 4, 2022 · tvN
Eun-hui calls Dong-seok in Seoul and tells him Ok-dong has terminal cancer. He responds with cold indifference — he’ll deal with the regret when she is gone. Then he watches Seon-a laugh with her ex-husband and son at a distance, and something in him shifts. In-gwon, Ho-sik, and Eun-hui corner him and force him to hear why he owes his mother this one last thing. Lee Byung-hun’s stillness in this scene is better than most actors’ weeping.

Our Blues Episode 19 — Ok-dong and Dong-seok 2
EP 19
Why He Couldn’t Forgive
June 11, 2022 · tvN
Seon-a helps Dong-seok put words to a wound he has never been able to name: he resented his mother for remarrying a month after his father died and for standing silent while his stepbrothers beat him. In-gwon’s eatery bears witness when he announces he will take Ok-dong to Mokpo after all. Yeong-ju is rushed to hospital in an emergency. And Jeong-jun, quietly and without making it a moment, convinces Yeong-ok to meet his parents.

Our Blues Episode 20 — Final
EP 20
We Were Born to Be Happy
June 12, 2022 · tvN
Dong-seok takes Ok-dong to Mokpo for her dead husband’s memorial. Her stepbrother accuses Dong-seok of causing the stepfather’s death — and Ok-dong, for the first time in thirty years, explodes in her son’s defense. That night, when Dong-seok asks why she never apologized, she stares back and asks: “Why should I?” He sleeps alone in his truck. The next morning, she tells him why she was silent while he was beaten — a guilt so old and so large she never found a way to speak it. On the ferry home, Dong-seok writes words on a foggy window for her: her name, his name, the mountain, the sea. Ok-dong lights up. He takes her halfway up Halla in his truck while she sleeps, hikes the rest alone, and films the summit for her. One month later: every arc lands. Yeong-ju gives birth. Seon-a arrives at the village athletic meet to cheers. The finale closes with a title card — we were not born to suffer. We were born to be happy — and for once in this drama, you believe it.

🏁 Ending Explained

Full spoilers ahead — everything that happens in the finale and what it all means.

⚠️
Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of Our Blues. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

The Trip to Mokpo. The entire final episode is built around a single journey: Dong-seok driving his mother Ok-dong to Mokpo for the memorial of the stepfather she married thirty years ago — the man whose arrival destroyed Dong-seok’s childhood. At the memorial, the stepbrother who once beat Dong-seok accuses him of causing the old man’s death. Ok-dong responds with an explosion of fury nobody in the room expected. For the first time in Dong-seok’s life, his mother screams in his defense — tells the room that the boy never deserved what was done to him. Lee Byung-hun watches this happen from across the table. Kim Hye-ja plays it without a single false note. The scene is the reason the drama exists.

Our Blues (2022) Episode 19 — Why He Couldn't Forgive

Why She Never Said Sorry. That night, when Dong-seok asks his mother why she has never apologized, Ok-dong stares back and says: “Why should I?” He sleeps in his truck. But the next morning, she finds the words — she tells him that she blamed herself for the death of his younger sister, that the guilt paralyzed her, that she stayed silent while he was beaten because she believed food and shelter were the only love she knew how to give. It is not an apology in any clean sense. It is something harder and truer: the honest account of a woman shaped by poverty and loss, doing everything wrong while doing everything she could.

The Foggy Window. On the ferry home, Dong-seok writes words on the condensation of the window beside his sleeping mother — her name, his father’s name, his sister’s name, Mount Halla, the sea. She wakes up and watches him. It is the scene of the year in any Korean drama from 2022, and it requires no translation. Back in Jeju, he takes her to the house he has been secretly renovating — Seon-a and her son have come for the weekend. Ok-dong looks at the house, looks at Seon-a, and understands: her difficult son has found someone who sees his kindness. That night she wakes early to cook doenjang-jjigae. When Dong-seok arrives, she is asleep at the table beside the bowls she set. He holds her and realizes she is gone.

Our Blues (2022) Episode 10 — Losing

Every Arc Lands. The final twenty minutes bring all five storylines home without forcing any of them. Yeong-ju delivers her baby early — a healthy girl, with Jung-hyeon beside her and both their fathers somewhere in the waiting room, no longer at war. Chun-hui returns from Mokpo changed but intact. Mi-ran and Eun-hui have repaired their friendship through honest confrontation rather than convenient forgiveness. Yeong-ok and Jeong-jun, having met his accepting parents, are stronger together than before. Yeong-hui visits Jeju more often now. And at the village athletic meet, Seon-a walks in from the Seoul train and the whole community — people who barely knew her — cheers. She belongs here now.

What It All Meant. Our Blues is not, in the end, about romance — it is about all the ways that people who love each other can fail each other, and the fact that those failures do not have to be the final word. Every arc in the drama involves a wound that predates the drama itself: Dong-seok’s grudge is thirty years old, Eun-hui’s resentment is twenty, Yeong-ok’s shame is a lifetime. The show’s argument is that these old wounds can be named, if not fully healed. The final title card — “We were not born into this world to suffer. We were born to be happy” — reads like a platitude the first time. After twenty episodes, it feels like something the drama earned with every honest, unhurried scene. Our Blues is a drama that asks you to be patient with it, and repays that patience with something close to grace.

Our Blues (2022) Episode 1 — First Love, Old Wounds

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

🌊 Jeju Melancholy💙 Ensemble Magic🧅 Slow-Burn Tears🫂 Found Community

There is a version of Our Blues that fails — a drama where the omnibus format becomes a gimmick, where the ensemble swells too large to hold any single emotion for long, and where Jeju Island is set dressing rather than soul. The version that actually aired is something else entirely. Writer Noh Hee-kyung — who has spent thirty years writing Korean dramas that take ordinary people with devastating seriousness — gives every arc in this show its own gravitational field. The Han-su and Eun-hui storyline resolves in episode 3, before you are ready to let it go. The Yeong-ju and Jung-hyeon arc handles teenage pregnancy with more intelligence and less judgment than most adult dramas bring to the subject. And the Ok-dong and Dong-seok arc — which is, in the end, the drama’s spine — takes thirty years of accumulated resentment and asks whether acknowledgment is worth more than apology. For anyone who grew up with a complicated parent, this drama will know things about you that you did not say out loud. It shares DNA with My Liberation Notes — another 2022 drama that treats quietness as a form of intelligence — but where that show is about longing for escape, Our Blues is about the people who stayed.

Our Blues (2022) — cinematic still

The elephant in the room for international viewers is Kim Woo-bin. He was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in 2017 and spent five years away from screens — and his return here, as the quiet, gruff boat captain who falls without fanfare for the most guarded woman on Jeju, feels less like a comeback performance than like a man who knows what matters and is no longer in any hurry to prove it. His scenes with Han Ji-min are among the warmest in the drama. If you are watching this because you missed him, the drama will not disappoint. It may also make you cry in a parking lot. That is, in some ways, the show’s highest compliment. The pacing is genuinely slow by K-drama standards — the first arc concludes inside three episodes, which feels abrupt, and the drama takes its time establishing each new storyline from scratch. Some viewers find this breathable; others find it disjointed. It helps to know going in that the Jeong-jun and Yeong-ok storyline runs longest and pays off most completely. It also helps to know that this drama is not about twists — it is about accumulation, and the weight you feel by episode 18 is the weight of everything you have watched build since episode 1.

Our Blues is not the most plotted drama on this list or the most efficient. What it is — and what very few dramas manage to be — is genuinely, uncomplicatedly human. It does not explain its characters or excuse them. It does not give everyone a catharsis they did not earn. It watches people who love each other and harm each other and keep showing up anyway, and it decides that is enough. In the final episode, Dong-seok finds his mother at the kitchen table, the food still warm, the bowls still set, and he knows before he touches her. Lee Byung-hun has one of the most controlled, powerful careers in Korean cinema, and in this scene he undoes thirty years of that control in about forty-five seconds. If you have the patience for twenty hours of television that treats its characters like they matter, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha is the easier watch. Our Blues is the one that stays. Watch it when you have time to feel something, and then feel it.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🌊 Viewers who loved the slice-of-life warmth of Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha and want something emotionally deeper
🎭 Fans of ensemble dramas where the supporting cast is as fully written as the leads
💙 Anyone watching for Kim Woo-bin’s comeback — his performance here is completely worth the 20 episodes

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Kim Hye-ja and Lee Byung-hun in the Ok-dong arc — one of the best duos in K-drama history
Noh Hee-kyung’s writing — every character is fully human, every wound is honestly earned
Kim Woo-bin’s quiet return — warm, unshowy, completely right for the role
Jeju Island as a setting that earns its place in the emotional logic of every arc

What to know first
Very high time commitment — 20 episodes averaging 70 minutes each
Omnibus format means some arcs feel rushed at the start — the payoff comes later
No central romance — if you want one couple to root for, this is not that drama
Episodes are long — this is a deliberate, slow-burn experience, not a binge machine

8.6 / 10One of the best-written ensembles K-drama has produced — slow by design, devastating by impact. Worth every minute.
