Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

Hwang Min-hyun has done idol-actor roles before — charming leads in shows built around his face. Study Group is something different. Yoon Ga-min is a fully physical performance: the nunchaku sequences, the fire stunts, the sheer comic timing of a boy who studies with the same intensity he brings to snapping someone’s arm. He performs all of it himself, and the camera is honest about that. What makes it work isn’t just the athleticism — it’s the sincerity. Ga-min wants to study. He genuinely, desperately, almost pathetically wants to go to college. That single straight-faced motivation, played completely seriously against the absurdist chaos around it, is what separates Study Group from every other school brawler in the genre. If you enjoyed Weak Hero Class 1, this scratches an entirely different itch — funnier, louder, and twice as unhinged.

The show’s biggest divisive element is its tonal range — and depending on your appetite, it’s either the best or worst thing about it. Episodes one through five are almost purely fun: escalating fights, increasingly unhinged school politics, the kind of action choreography that makes you pause and rewind. Then the Yeon Baek gang arc tightens everything up, a murder charge lands, and Study Group briefly becomes a grittier drama than it advertised. Most viewers go with it. Some find the gear change jarring. The finale skews back toward warmth and lands soft — a few plot threads get tied up faster than they deserve, and Han-wool’s final confrontation asks you to accept some logic gaps. None of it derails the landing. The action DNA is closer to Bloodhounds (Season 1) than anything else in recent K-drama — relentless, kinetic, committed to the bit.

The supporting cast is what quietly elevates this beyond its premise. Shin Su-hyun’s Ji-woo, Gong Do-yu’s Lee Joon, the entire found-family dynamic that assembles by episode five — these aren’t just extras in Ga-min’s story, they’re the reason the finale hits. Study Group is the rare school action drama that cares as much about who these kids are as what they can do. Season 2 has a lot to live up to.
