Ha Eun-gyeol (Ryeoun) is the only hearing person in a household of deaf adults — a model student who secretly moonlights as a guitarist in Hongdae. When his father discovers his double life, the argument that follows sends Eun-gyeol through a mysterious music shop and back to 1995. There, he finds his teenage father Ha Yi-chan (Choi Hyun-wook): loud, hot-headed, and completely deaf to the fact that the stranger claiming to be his son is absolutely telling the truth. Worse still, Yi-chan is infatuated with the cool and elegant cellist Choi Se-kyung — not Eun-gyeol’s mother Chung-ah. The mission becomes clear: keep his father alive, steer him toward the right girl, and don’t fall in love with someone who might not exist in his timeline.

What starts as a playful fish-out-of-water premise deepens steadily into something richer. Eun-gyeol forms a band called Watermelon Sugar with the misfits of 1995, each with their own weight to carry. The Chung-ah and Yi-chan courtship — patient, aching, built on sign language and small kindnesses — is the most quietly moving romance of 2023.

The show crests somewhere around episodes 11 and 12 and the finale doesn’t quite land with the weight the setup deserves. Endings that skip the aftermath in favor of a flash-forward to prosperity are a K-drama habit, and this one falls into it. But Choi Hyun-wook’s final scene — an adult Yi-chan still choosing music, still playing despite everything — is the kind of payoff that stays with you. The drama’s thesis is that a life doesn’t have to go according to plan to twinkle. It makes its case. Not perfect. One of 2023’s best.
