1980s Korea

The time machine in My Perfect Stranger is a car — and the first thing it does is drop two strangers into 1987 Korea with separate missions that neither of them fully understands yet. Hae Jun came to catch a serial killer he believes is connected to his father. Yun Yeong came to stop her parents from ever meeting — which is to say, she came to unmake herself.

What the show does with that premise is quieter than you’d expect. Yun Yeong meets the teenage version of her mother and discovers, over several uncomfortable weeks, that the woman she blamed her whole life for the family they became was once a girl trying to figure out what to hope for. The murders don’t resolve what’s broken there. But watching them unfold — together, in 1987, under circumstances neither of them chose — does.

📺 Episode Guide

Spoiler-light recaps — enough to remember where you left off, nothing that ruins the ride.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 1 — Arrival in 1987
EP 01
Arrival in 1987
May 1, 2023
Two strangers land in 1987 the way most life-changing things happen — sideways and without explanation. Hae Jun arrives carrying a crime he came to prevent. Yun Yeong arrives carrying a plan to undo her own existence. Neither bothers to tell the other why they’re there. The drama’s first act of intelligence is making both missions feel equally reasonable, and equally doomed.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 2 — Strangers in a Strange Time
EP 02
Strangers in a Strange Time
May 2, 2023
The episode where both of them realize that being in the past isn’t the same as understanding it. Yun Yeong’s first actual encounter with the teenage version of her mother is disorienting the way mirrors are — the person you thought you knew, from an angle you’ve never seen before. She came here to erase a story. She’s about to discover she doesn’t know it as well as she thought.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 3 — The First Murder
EP 03
The First Murder
May 8, 2023
Foreknowledge turns out to be overrated. Hae Jun knows a murder is coming and still can’t stop its approach — because knowing when doesn’t tell you how, and knowing the facts of something doesn’t mean you’ve understood it. His first intervention fails almost immediately. Meanwhile, Yun Yeong’s interference in her mother’s romantic life creates ripple effects she didn’t account for.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 4 — The Town Holds Its Breath
EP 04
The Town Holds Its Breath
May 9, 2023
The village breathes differently once the murders start. Hae Jun earns his place in the community by being useful — playing teacher while running an investigation underneath. The strategy makes sense; it’s also a description of how someone disappears into a role they didn’t choose. Meanwhile, Yun Yeong’s developing bond with Sun Ae starts costing her things she didn’t budget for when she came here.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 5 — Operation: Stop the Wedding
EP 05
Operation: Stop the Wedding
May 15, 2023
Yun Yeong takes direct action to derail her parents’ budding romance — and watches Sun Ae respond with a brightness and openness she never saw in the actual version of her mother. This is the episode where the moral math of Yun Yeong’s mission stops adding up. She came here to eliminate a person. She’s been spending weeks realizing she never actually knew that person.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 6 — Suspects and Secrets
EP 06
Suspects and Secrets
May 16, 2023
Fragments of Sun Ae’s history surface, and what they form reframes Yun Yeong’s understanding of why her childhood was what it was. Hae Jun and Yun Yeong stop pretending they aren’t in this together — not yet trust, something more provisional than that, but honest. What the episode reveals quietly: their separate family wounds are pieces of the same thing.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 7 — The Price of Knowing
EP 07
The Price of Knowing
May 22, 2023
The suspect Hae Jun was building toward turns out to be someone he didn’t expect — and the revelation doesn’t just change the investigation. It changes what he thinks he knows about himself and where he came from. The turning point episode: neither lead can pretend anymore that their mission is clean, or that they’re certain about what they’re supposed to do here.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 8 — Crossroads
EP 08
Crossroads
May 23, 2023
The midpoint where both leads have to decide who they actually are in 1987, not just what they came there to do. Yun Yeong chooses to protect Sun Ae over completing her original mission. Hae Jun finds that his corrections to the past don’t hold the way he expected. They start depending on each other in a way that neither calls by the right name — and the show is patient enough to let that stay unnamed for now.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 9 — What We Owe the Dead
EP 09
What We Owe the Dead
May 29, 2023
The question the drama has been slowly building toward: is Yun Yeong’s unhappy origin story her mother’s fault, or a tragedy neither woman had the power to prevent? Hae Jun faces the same version of the question about his father — and the investigation into the murders enters its darkest stretch precisely because the answer isn’t one he’s going to enjoy. The past is not a place where you go to find someone to blame.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 10 — The Unraveling
EP 10
The Unraveling
May 30, 2023
The killer’s identity becomes harder to deny. Hae Jun is in physical danger for the first time, which changes the texture of everything. Yun Yeong watches a pivotal moment in her parents’ relationship unfold and chooses not to intervene — that silence is the episode’s most decisive action. Something shifts between the two leads that neither of them acknowledges in the room.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 11 — Darkness at the Edge of Town
EP 11
Darkness at the Edge of Town
Jun 5, 2023
History doesn’t cooperate with Hae Jun’s script for it. The escalations he didn’t anticipate are the drama’s argument that the past has its own momentum — foreknowledge is less a weapon than a burden. Yun Yeong begins connecting the murder case to her own family history. This is the episode where the personal and the criminal timelines stop being parallel and become the same line.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 12 — The Suspect Revealed
EP 12
The Suspect Revealed
Jun 6, 2023
The killer is revealed — not as a monster but as a deeply sad portrait of how violence can be rooted in warped love and unresolved pain. The drama plays the revelation not as a satisfying twist but as a reckoning, which is the correct choice. Hae Jun and Yun Yeong work together under genuine danger for the first time. What crosses between them here crosses without announcement.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 13 — The Cost of Change
EP 13
The Cost of Change
Jun 12, 2023
The drama’s most ethically demanding episode. Stopping the final murder requires choices with permanent consequences for both timelines — and Yun Yeong confronts the full weight of what saving her mother actually means. Not whether she can rewrite Sun Ae’s story. Whether she has the right.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 14 — Fighting the Clock
EP 14
Fighting the Clock
Jun 13, 2023
Racing against the final murder, with physical danger at its peak. The 1987 village is different because these two people were in it — some of those changes are beautiful, some are devastating, and the drama doesn’t flinch from either. Every interference has a return address. Every choice made in the past is coming due simultaneously.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 15 — Everything That Was Hidden
EP 15
Everything That Was Hidden
Jun 19, 2023
Quieter than expected, and correct to be. The murders are resolved; what remains is the aftermath of every truth that surfaced while solving them. Both characters have to sit with what has changed before they can leave. The time machine stops being a plot device here and becomes something more uncomfortable: a symbol of the irreversible.

My Perfect Stranger Episode 16 — The Road Back (Finale)
EP 16
The Road Back · Finale
Jun 20, 2023
Hae Jun cannot leave 1987 yet — and the show gives him time to understand why. His farewell visits to the people he’s come to care for are careful, partial: enough truth to honor the relationship, not enough to destabilize the timeline they’re about to be handed. Yun Yeong returns to a present where her mother is alive and the wound she carried her whole life is simply gone. The romance closes with a reunion that earns its warmth precisely because the drama never rushed it — they find each other not because they ran out of other options, but because they finally have the same answer to the same question.

🏁 Ending Explained

⚠️
Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of My Perfect Stranger. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

How Hae Jun Stops the Last Murder. Hae Jun stops the final killing not through intelligence but through willingness — he puts his own body in the way of it. The episode earns that moment across fifteen episodes of buildup. This is a man who traveled to 1987 theorizing about evil, and leaves it having decided, in a moment without time to theorize, that some things simply have to be stopped. The distinction between knowing and acting is what the whole drama was quietly arguing about all along.

My Perfect Stranger (2023) — Ending Explained

What Sun Ae Gets Instead. What Lee Soon-ae receives in the rewritten timeline is not a perfect life. She gets one where the specific catastrophe that bent the course of her choices no longer happened — which gives her room to become someone her daughter never got to see. The drama resists the sentimentality of a clean happy ending for Sun Ae and offers something more careful: a trajectory that belongs to her. Not fixed. Redirected.

What Hae Jun Learns About His Father. The truth about Hae Jun’s father is harder and more useful than the version he arrived in 1987 expecting to confirm. The man he finds is not innocent — but he is legible, which turns out to be its own kind of release. What 1987 gave Hae Jun was not the father he wanted. It gave him the real one, and the space to decide what that means for who he is.

My Perfect Stranger (2023) — Ending Explained

Yun Yeong’s Return. Yun Yeong comes back to 2023 to find her mother alive and living the life she deserved. The drama earned this moment by taking the long way to it — by letting Yun Yeong spend sixteen episodes genuinely knowing Sun Ae before asking the audience to celebrate her survival. The wound Yun Yeong carried her entire life is gone because the thing that made it is gone. Not resolved. Gone. The distinction matters.

The Reunion. The romance between Hae Jun and Yun Yeong ends where it began: with two people in the same place for different reasons who eventually realized they were asking the same question. The show handled them with unusual restraint — no rushed confessions, no declarations timed to the plot — and the reunion in 2023 earns its warmth precisely because it was never taken for granted. They recognize each other. That’s the whole ending. It’s enough.

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

⏰ Time Travel

🕯️ 1987 Nostalgia
🌸 Slow Burn

Kim Dong-wook has spent most of his career in the register just below leading-man obvious — reliable, specific, never quite the first name on the call sheet. My Perfect Stranger gives him a role that plays to exactly that quality: Hae Jun is a man who has trained himself to be composed, and Dong-wook does something interesting with that composure by making it visibly expensive. The way he holds himself in the early 1987 scenes — polite, contained, clearly working hard to not show how disoriented he is — reads differently once you know what it’s costing him to be there. If you’ve watched him in Through the Darkness, you know what he looks like when a role gives him room to operate at full range. He earns that room here.

My Perfect Stranger (2023) — Editor's Pick

Jin Ki-joo is doing something more complicated. Yun Yeong arrives in 1987 with a plan that the show immediately begins dismantling, and Ki-joo plays the dismantling in real time. There’s a specificity to how Yun Yeong shifts from mission-mode to genuine feeling — visible not in dramatic declarations but in the moments when she stops correcting herself. The silence she holds in Episode 10, choosing not to intervene in her parents’ relationship, works entirely because Ki-joo makes the calculation legible: we know exactly what it costs, and why she does it anyway. For a drama built on what people feel but refuse to say, that’s load-bearing work. The closest parallel in recent K-drama for this kind of quiet emotional architecture is Lovely Runner, which used time travel for romance the way My Perfect Stranger uses it for family reckoning — the emotional mechanism is the same, the emotional register is entirely different.

The structural weakness is the drama’s confidence in its own pacing, which dips in Episodes 7 and 8 — the murder mystery thread needed one more concrete development during that stretch to hold its weight. But the final third rewards the patience, and the central ethical question the show keeps returning to — whether you have the right to rewrite someone else’s story, even to save them — is the kind of question that doesn’t leave cleanly. Worth the commitment.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🔍 Fans of layered mystery-romance who don’t want to choose between them
💊 Viewers who find time travel more interesting as emotional premise than plot device
🌿 Anyone who has complex, unresolved feelings about a parent

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Kim Dong-wook’s most fully realized leading-man performance
A mystery that earns its emotional resolution without shortcuts
Slow-burn romance built across 16 episodes rather than announced

What to know first
Deliberately paced — the first few episodes reward patience
Mystery elements are atmospheric, not procedural thriller
Episodes 7–8 drag slightly; the final third makes up for it

8.3 / 10
A rare K-drama that uses time travel, serial murder, and romance as ethical questions rather than genre mechanics — and earns every answer it gives.
