Lovely Runner

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

Byeon Woo-seok had been in the industry for a decade before Lovely Runner — mostly in supporting roles, solid but unheralded. What this drama revealed is that he had been waiting for a role that required him to do three things simultaneously: be an idol, be a man quietly destroyed by grief, and be someone who falls in love without knowing he’s doing it. He does all three. Kim Hye-yoon, who has never given a bad performance, gives her best one here — a woman who is funny and reckless and heartbroken, often within the same scene. The chemistry between them is the rare kind that doesn’t feel constructed for camera angles. It feels like two people who genuinely like each other and can’t look away.

The drama has one honest weakness: the last four episodes don’t quite match the first twelve. Episodes 9 through 12 carry a thriller energy that the finale section struggles to sustain at the same pitch, and the villain — Kim Young-soo — is functional rather than memorable. Some viewers found this deflating; others (this editor included) didn’t mind, because by episode 13 the drama had already done its best work and the finale earns its sweetness on the strength of everything that came before. The OST deserves a specific mention: every Eclipse song was performed by Byeon Woo-seok himself, who took vocal training for the role, and the music is genuinely good — not “good for a K-drama,” just good.

Lovely Runner is one of those dramas where the premise sounds manipulative — fan saves idol via time travel — but the execution is disarmingly sincere. Writer Lee Si-eun (who also wrote True Beauty) has grown considerably as a craftsperson: the time travel logic is internally consistent, the emotional beats are earned rather than imposed, and the drama understands that its two leads need space to be fully human, not just romantic archetypes. If you want another time-travel romance with the same emotional precision, Twinkling Watermelon is the closest companion piece in recent K-drama. A 9.0 on MDL from nearly 100,000 voters is not an accident. It’s the real thing.
