Park Dong-ha has a failed tenure bid, a marriage on the edge of divorce, and a son who needs surgery he can’t afford — and then, on one bad night, he crashes into a car carrying a dead body and a bag full of drug cartel cash. He takes the money. He buries the bodies. He tells himself it’s a one-time fix. It is not.

It’s one of 2022’s tensest Korean crime thrillers precisely because it never treats Dong-ha’s situation as fixable. Jung Woo carries the show as a man perpetually improvising his way through consequences he never saw coming, while Park Hee-soon’s cartel enforcer makes every scene he’s in feel like a countdown.

A Model Family Episode 1 — The Body in the Backyard EP 01
The Body in the Backyard
Aug 12, 2022
Dong-ha’s tenure bid collapses, his marriage is unraveling, and his son needs surgery he can’t afford — then a car crash drops a bag of cartel cash and two corpses directly into his path. He takes the money. He buries the bodies. And then a phone rings from beneath the dirt, and his wife Eun-ju’s name lights up the screen. A morally desperate premiere that turns a good man into a liability in under an hour.

A Model Family Episode 2 — A Name on a Dead Man's Phone EP 02
A Name on a Dead Man’s Phone
Aug 12, 2022
Dong-ha can’t shake the sight of Eun-ju’s number on a dead man’s phone, but there’s no time to ask questions — Ma Kwang-chul is already combing the neighborhood for his missing cash. A half-formed plan to launder the money through crypto stalls out before it starts, and Kwang-chul’s enforcers make it brutally clear what happens to people who don’t return what they took. Detective Kang Joo-hyun enters the case, and the walls start closing in from both directions at once.

A Model Family Episode 3 — The Anonymous Tip EP 03
The Anonymous Tip
Aug 12, 2022
The search for the missing money gets more precise, and precision is the last thing Dong-ha needs — Kwang-chul is now tracing the launderer’s trail straight toward him. Panicking, Dong-ha does the one thing guaranteed to cause more trouble: he anonymously tips off police about his own neighbor, hoping to buy himself some distance. It barely works. Every choice he makes to protect his family only drags more people into the wreckage he started.

A Model Family Episode 4 — The First Run EP 04
The First Run
Aug 12, 2022
Dong-ha stops being a bystander and becomes cargo — Kwang-chul sends him on his first drug run to Busan, and there’s no pretending anymore that he’s just a man who made one bad call. Detective Joo-hyun’s investigation edges closer to the truth while, at home, Yeon-woo runs away, unable to stand what her family has quietly become. The professor and the courier are now the same person, and his family is falling apart without him even in the room.

A Model Family Episode 5 — The Money in the Garage EP 05
The Money in the Garage
Aug 12, 2022
Yeon-woo finds the cash her father buried his conscience for and does what any furious teenager might — she takes a chunk of it and disappears. Kwang-chul assumes Dong-ha is trying to run, and the threat that follows is no longer abstract. Eun-ju finds what’s left of the money, and with it, the truth she’s been circling for weeks. The line between Dong-ha’s crime and his family’s daily life stops existing this episode.

A Model Family Episode 6 — The Fake Grandfather EP 06
The Fake Grandfather
Aug 12, 2022
Eun-ju finally corners Dong-ha and demands the truth, while across town Kwang-chul survives an attack only to wake up fighting for his place inside the cartel all over again. After a police raid on a Chinatown drug deal, Dong-ha turns himself in with a lie about soliciting sex workers — anything to keep the real story buried. Then Park Deuk-soo shows up at the house claiming to be the kids’ long-lost grandfather, and he is not who he says he is.

A Model Family Episode 7 — What Deuk-soo Found EP 07
What Deuk-soo Found
Aug 12, 2022
Kwang-chul walks straight into Dong-ha’s home to deliver a warning in person, which tells you exactly how far this has spread. Deuk-soo, still playing grandfather, keeps quietly searching the house for evidence — and finds it, first in Eun-ju’s phone, then in the backyard, where the bodies are still buried. Choi Kang-jun nurses his own grudge against Kwang-chul in the background, waiting for his moment. The danger stops being outside the house and starts living inside it.

A Model Family Episode 8 — Who Killed Han-cheol EP 08
Who Killed Han-cheol
Aug 12, 2022
Dong-ha gets pulled into moving the cartel’s cash again, and Choi Kang-jun sees an opening — offering to cut him loose from Kwang-chul entirely, for a price only Kang-jun benefits from. Eun-ju strikes her own bargain, agreeing to watch her husband in exchange for the family’s safety. Deuk-soo finally confronts Dong-ha about the bodies, and the episode drops its biggest bomb: Kang-jun, not Dong-ha, is the one who killed Han-cheol. Every alliance in this show is a temporary one.

A Model Family Episode 9 — The Mole EP 09
The Mole
Aug 12, 2022
Yong-soo tries to disappear before the cartel catches up to him. It doesn’t work. Detective Joo-hyun trades information with Kang-jun — the mole’s identity for Han-cheol’s killer — while Dong-ha finally cracks in public, the pressure of nine episodes of lies breaking through at once. Joo-hyun gives him an ultimatum: confess or die. The episode’s real gut-punch is who the mole turns out to be, and what she’s willing to do to stay hidden.

A Model Family Episode 10 — One More Phone Call EP 10
One More Phone Call
Aug 12, 2022
The police dig up Dong-ha’s backyard and find nothing — Deuk-soo already moved the bodies next door. Kwang-chul cements his position by eliminating the Messenger, and Joo-hyun, out of grief and out of patience, finally puts a bullet in the corrupt lieutenant who’s been running circles around her. Dong-ha finds the dashcam footage that explains everything that started this whole disaster and decides to confess — right before his phone rings with a reminder that this story isn’t actually over.

🏁 Ending Explained

Spoiler territory from here — the finale, fully unpacked.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of A Model Family. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

What actually happened By the time the finale ends, Dong-ha’s backyard has been dug up and found empty — Park Deuk-soo moved the bodies to the neighbor’s yard just in time. Kwang-chul kills the Messenger to send a message up the cartel chain, and Detective Joo-hyun, out of options and out of grief, shoots the corrupt Lieutenant Moon Jung-kook after learning she killed Officer Yun-seok to protect herself. Dong-ha finally finds the dashcam footage that explains how this all started — the real story behind Han-cheol’s death and his final words to Eun-ju. He decides to turn himself in. Then his phone rings with a call that makes it clear the cartel isn’t done with his family yet.

A Model Family (2022) — Park Dong-ha faces the aftermath of the finale in A Model Family

The detective who actually got justice Joo-hyun’s arc lands the hardest gut-punch of the finale, mostly because it’s the one storyline that actually resolves. She loses her partner, loses an ally, and gets her answer — the mole was inside her own department the entire time — and her response isn’t procedural, it’s personal. Shooting Jung-kook isn’t a triumphant moment of justice; it’s what happens when the system that’s supposed to deliver justice has already failed everyone who trusted it.

That final phone call Dong-ha’s decision to confess is the most honest thing he does across all ten episodes, and the show immediately undercuts it with that final phone call. Nothing about the ending confirms the family is safe — it confirms the opposite. The cartel that pulled Dong-ha into this mess in episode one is still standing, still watching, and still perfectly willing to use his family as leverage whenever it needs to.

A Model Family (2022) — The ominous final phone call that closes A Model Family

What Eun-ju’s secret was really worth Eun-ju’s own secrets — the reason her number was on a dead man’s phone in the first place — never get the full spotlight the setup in episode one promises, and that’s arguably the finale’s biggest loose thread. What’s clear is that neither parent is innocent by the end. Dong-ha broke the law to save his family financially; Eun-ju made her own compromises to keep them physically safe. Neither of them gets to be the hero of this story.

The KDW verdict The title is the whole joke. A Model Family spends ten episodes proving that the Parks were never a model of anything except how fast an ordinary household can be pulled apart by one decision made for a good reason. The finale doesn’t offer catharsis so much as exhaustion — which, for a show this relentlessly grim about what desperation does to decent people, is exactly the right note to end on.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Straight talk on whether this one’s worth watching, and for who.

💰 One Bad Decision 🚗 Wrong Place, Wrong Time 🔫 Cartel Pressure 🏚️ Family Unraveling

Jung Woo plays Dong-ha as a man perpetually one bad decision behind the one he just made, and it’s the performance that keeps A Model Family from tipping into pure misery. He doesn’t play Dong-ha as a criminal mastermind cosplaying as a professor — he plays him as exactly what he is, a guy who’s catastrophically out of his depth and knows it every second. The show’s central hook — a spouse hiding a devastating secret from the person who’s supposed to know them best — will feel familiar to anyone who’s watched Flower of Evil, though this show is far more interested in institutional corruption than in romance.

A Model Family (2022) — cinematic still

What separates A Model Family from a straightforward crime thriller is how little interest it has in giving Dong-ha a clean moral out. Every choice he makes to protect his family costs someone else something, and the show never lets him — or the audience — forget it. Fans of Beyond Evil‘s slow-burn moral rot will recognize the same instinct here — a crime story less interested in who did it than in what doing it costs everyone around them.

Ten episodes is a tight runtime for this many moving pieces — a cartel power struggle, a police mole, a marriage built on a secret, a teenage runaway subplot — and the finale occasionally shows the seams of trying to close all of it at once. But the show never loses sight of its actual subject: not the drugs, not the money, just how quickly an ordinary family can become complicit in its own destruction.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🎯 Crime thriller fans who want consequences with real weight 😬 Anyone who likes their K-dramas morally uncomfortable ⏱️ Viewers who want a complete story in 10 episodes, no filler

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Jung Woo’s performance sells every escalating bad decision as believable
Park Hee-soon is one of the more genuinely unsettling antagonists in recent K-drama crime
Ten tight episodes with almost no wasted time

What to know first
Eun-ju’s own secret gets less resolution than the setup promises
The ending is deliberately unresolved, not a clean wrap-up
Content is genuinely dark — violence, corruption, and no easy outs

7.4 / 10— A relentless, well-acted crime thriller about how fast desperation curdles into complicity.
