📖 The Story
No spoilers ahead — just enough to see if it fits your taste.
New Year Blues follows four couples across one week of romance leading up to New Year’s Eve. Instead of one love story, it weaves several together, each with its own mood, its own city and its own reason for being afraid of starting over.
Ji-hoo is a detective who has been demoted out of the violent crimes unit and has been divorced for four years. Hyo-young is a rehabilitation trainer who asks for police protection. Both are coming out of failed marriages, and neither is open to the possibility of new love.
Jin-ah works a non-permanent job at a ski resort and has just been dumped. She travels to the other side of the globe and runs into Jae-heon, a wine deliveryman who also left Seoul behind after burning out.
Yong-chan runs a travel agency and is swindled out of his wedding savings. His fiancée Yao Lin has been transferred to the Korean branch of her company, so the international couple is about to marry just as the cracks in their plans begin to show. Yong-mi, troubled by her younger brother’s international marriage, adds family pressure to the mix.
Rae-hwan is a Paralympic national team athlete who proposes to his longtime girlfriend Oh-wol. In their eyes they are a perfect match, but the world around them does not always see it that way, and Rae-hwan feels guilty about the prejudice she has to face for loving him.
Oh-wol, a gardener, believes there is no obstacle to love. That gap between how they see themselves and how others see them is the film’s most direct test of what a relationship can survive.
Taken together, the four stories move between humor, loneliness and hope. The shared thread is that every character, in their own way, is looking to be a little happier by the time the new year begins.
🏁 Ending Explained
Full spoilers from this point — what happened, and why.
Four stories, four endings Each storyline reaches its own conclusion as the countdown to the new year closes in. Reports of the finale are limited, so the summaries below stay general and some details may differ from how other write-ups tell them.
Rae-hwan and Oh-wol Rae-hwan finds his footing again at his competition and the couple makes up, so the question he asked is not left hanging. Their story ends on reconciliation rather than on a break.
Jin-ah and Jae-heon Jin-ah comes to terms with the breakup that sent her halfway across the world. Her time away with Jae-heon helps her make peace with the past rather than run from it.
Ji-hoo and Hyo-young Ji-hoo returns to his old unit, and the two of them grow closer, with the film pointing toward the possibility of something new between them.
Yong-chan and Yao Lin Yong-chan proposes to Yao Lin again, which settles the marriage worries that hung over their story. What the ending means: New Year Blues closes on forgiveness and second chances for all four couples, not on grand twists.
✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take
Worth watching or not — our honest read, and who it’s for.
New Year Blues works best as a holiday mood piece. With four couples sharing the runtime, no single story gets deep, but the cast is strong enough that each pairing leaves an impression.
The structure also means some stories feel lighter than others, and the romantic beats are familiar. What it offers instead is warmth, humor and a forgiving view of people who are afraid to start over.
It is a pleasant, low-stress watch for the end of the year, especially if you enjoy seeing a big group of well-known actors in one place.
