Healing Arc
Second Personality

Joo Eun-ho has been a news announcer for fourteen years and has almost nothing to show for it — not because she lacks talent, but because the man who became the station’s star anchor is also her ex-boyfriend of eight years. The wound is professional and personal at the same time, which means she can’t escape either one by going to work. When her younger sister disappeared, something in Eun-ho fractured. What emerged was Hye-ri: warm, carefree, a parking attendant with no complicated history and none of the weight.

What Dear Hyeri is actually doing is asking what happens when someone is so good at surviving grief that they build a whole other person out of it. Hye-ri isn’t a symptom of something broken. She’s the version of Eun-ho that grief made room for — warmer, freer, and more capable of love than Eun-ho has let herself be. The drama’s real problem isn’t whether the two identities can coexist. It’s whether Eun-ho can want to live as herself again.

📺 Episode Guide

Spoiler-light recaps — enough to remember where you left off, nothing that ruins the ride.

Dear Hyeri Episode 1 — Not A Love Story
EP 01
Not A Love Story
September 23, 2024
Eun-ho and Hyun-oh haven’t spoken in ways that matter for years, but they’re still tangled — professionally, spatially, and clearly in ways neither will admit. A co-host offer gets declined and immediately accepted by him, collapsing the careful distance they’ve maintained. When Hye-ri stirs for the first time at the end of the episode, it reads almost like relief. She has better things to do than feel this.

Dear Hyeri Episode 2 — Eun Ho In Trouble
EP 02
Eun Ho In Trouble
September 24, 2024
Hye-ri meets Hyun-oh and doesn’t recognize him at all. Eight years of shared history belongs to Eun-ho, not to her — and his visible confusion at being looked at like a stranger is the first scene where the dissociation carries actual dramatic weight. What Joo-yeon is falling for isn’t a person who fully exists.

Dear Hyeri Episode 3 — Wish
EP 03
Wish
September 30, 2024
Hyun-oh rescues her and receives a warning to stay away. The show understands that this particular dynamic — “I need you but I need you gone” — makes no sense from the outside and complete sense from inside grief. Eun-ho wakes up holding Joo-yeon’s employee card. The boundaries between her two selves have already started to leak.

Dear Hyeri Episode 4 — Love Is A Star
EP 04
Love Is A Star
October 1, 2024
Eun-ho shatters a mirror she doesn’t remember touching. Then tells her doctor she’d rather stay as Hye-ri. That confession is the line the episode is built around — not that she’s losing control, but that she has decided the other self is more habitable. The episode earns it.

Dear Hyeri Episode 5 — Farewell
EP 05
Farewell
October 7, 2024
She wakes beside Hyun-oh with no memory of getting there. Joo-yeon rushes to find Hye-ri and instead finds her with him. It’s the first moment the triangle stops feeling like a plot convenience and starts feeling like a real collision between two people who both have claims on someone who isn’t entirely one person.

Dear Hyeri Episode 6 — The History Of Farewells
EP 06
The History Of Farewells
October 8, 2024
The backstory episode, and the one that reframes Hyun-oh entirely: orphaned young, taken in by a crime boss, the 9 PM news slot he quietly gave up for Eun-ho without telling her. He isn’t someone who left. He’s someone terrified that love turns into loss, so he pre-empts it. The episode earns its title by asking how many farewells a person can survive before they stop reaching for anything.

Dear Hyeri Episode 7 — Pretending To Be Hye Ri
EP 07
Pretending To Be Hye Ri
October 14, 2024
Eun-ho deliberately becomes Hye-ri for a company sports day — not because she loses control, but because she chooses the lighter version of herself. Then Joo-yeon learns the truth. The fiction that made the romance possible collapses in a single afternoon, and what’s left is more interesting than what was there before. The secret is out. The question shifts from whether to what everyone does with it.

Dear Hyeri Episode 8 — My Dear Viewers
EP 08
My Dear Viewers
October 15, 2024
Her shows are stripped. The noon news slot — the one Hyun-oh sacrificed his own career to protect for her — becomes the clearest accounting of what her disorder has cost both of them. The series’ lowest point isn’t a plot event. It’s the weight of things done out of love that the other person didn’t know about.

Dear Hyeri Episode 9 — Your Real Name
EP 09
Your Real Name
October 21, 2024
She disappears for a month. Joo-yeon is the one who goes looking — which tells you something about where his feelings actually sit. Finding her means telling Hyun-oh the full truth about Hye-ri, and everything that had been carefully compartmentalized becomes impossible to maintain. Every wall between the three of them comes down in a single episode.

Dear Hyeri Episode 10 — My Love
EP 10
My Love
October 22, 2024
Hyun-oh brings home a woman who might be Eun-ho or might be Hye-ri, and treats her with the same tenderness either way. That uncertainty handled as care rather than frustration is one of the episode’s more quietly remarkable moments. Joo-yeon’s goodbye arrives like a confession that came at exactly the wrong time.

Dear Hyeri Episode 11 — I Missed Everything About You
EP 11
I Missed Everything About You
October 28, 2024
Eun-ho comes back to herself, and the way she immediately throws herself back into work signals that recovery isn’t passive — she is choosing it. Hyun-oh survives an attempt on his life. Near-misses in melodrama usually function as plot acceleration; this one works because it redraws everyone’s priorities with the bluntness of something that almost didn’t happen.

Dear Hyeri Episode 12 — Finale
EP 12
Dear Hyeri · Finale
October 29, 2024
The farewell party for Hye-ri — Eun-ho’s idea — is the drama’s strangest and most moving gesture: inviting everyone who knew the alter to say goodbye to a person who technically never existed. Joo-yeon’s farewell is the episode’s gut-punch, and it lands because the drama spent eleven episodes building what Hye-ri actually meant to him. Hyun-oh proposes in the meadow where the sister once disappeared. The location didn’t change. The meaning did.

🏁 Ending Explained

⚠️
Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of Dear Hyeri. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

The goodbye that wasn’t an erasure. Eun-ho’s psychiatrist confirms what the audience has been watching across twelve episodes: Hye-ri is no longer emerging. The disorder is integrated. But where a lesser drama would frame this as victory — the person cured, the story resolved — Dear Hyeri frames it as loss. Eun-ho throws a farewell party. She invites everyone who knew Hye-ri. She gives the alter a proper send-off, because Hye-ri was never just a symptom. She was the part of Eun-ho that survived by becoming someone who didn’t know how much she was hurting.

Dear Hyeri (2024) — Ending Explained

Showing up as its own form of love. With Jae-yong in the ICU after shielding Hyun-oh from the car meant for him, the 9 PM news broadcast is in crisis. Hyun-oh breaks down in his office — the vulnerability underneath everything finally surfacing, visible in a way it hasn’t been across the whole series. Eun-ho steadies him. She tells him that anchoring the broadcast is how he protects what Jae-yong built. He does it. Jae-yong recovers. The two resolutions are bound together in the episode’s emotional logic: showing up, in this drama, is its own kind of declaration.

The meadow that changed meaning. Hyun-oh proposes in the meadow where Eun-ho’s sister Joo Hye-ri once disappeared — the place that started everything. The drama never explains directly why Eun-ho created an alter who shared her sister’s name, but it doesn’t need to. We already understand: Hye-ri was how Eun-ho kept her sister alive without having to acknowledge that she was gone. Choosing to stand in that meadow again, this time as herself, and accept something new — that’s the fullest version of what “healing” looks like here. Not a return to before. An inhabiting of after.

Dear Hyeri (2024) — Ending Explained

The thank-you that sounds like grief. Joo-yeon’s farewell to Hye-ri is the finale’s most quietly devastating beat. He thanks her for teaching him to value the time he has beside his hospitalized mother. What he’s actually saying is that Hye-ri — a person who technically never existed — changed who he is. That’s the drama’s strangest achievement: the alter accumulated real emotional meaning while never being real. The goodbye lands because the relationship was genuine, even if the identity wasn’t.

She doesn’t become who she was. She becomes who she is. The final understanding Dear Hyeri arrives at is not that Eun-ho has recovered and can resume the life she had before the dissociation. The farewell party for Hye-ri is also a farewell to the grief that created her. Eun-ho doesn’t erase Hye-ri; she acknowledges everything the alter carried on her behalf — joy, openness, the capacity to love without armor. The question the drama leaves with isn’t whether she can get those things back. It’s whether she can learn to hold them herself, in her own name.

🌿 The Work of Becoming

Shin Hae-sun has made a career playing women who are sharper than the room expects — Angel’s Last Mission: Love, Mr. Queen, Tale of Nok-du — but Dear Hyeri asks her to do something more technically unusual: play two characters who share a body at different temperatures. What she does in the transition between Eun-ho and Hye-ri isn’t accent or affect. It’s posture. Eun-ho holds herself as if the next professional insult is already incoming. Hye-ri stands like she’s never had to brace for one. That physical distinction is load-bearing — the drama’s entire credibility rests on whether you believe the two identities are separate, and Shin Hae-sun makes it effortless to believe they are. She also adds a third register that appears in the episode where Eun-ho deliberately performs Hye-ri: something caught between the two, a woman playing the version of herself she wishes she were. If you’ve followed her in the emotional excavation register of Call It Love (2023), you know she can do this. Dear Hyeri is where she makes it look effortless.

Dear Hyeri (2024) — Editor's Pick

Lee Jin-uk plays Hyun-oh as someone who learned to be capable at everything except staying. The performance is most interesting in the backstory episode — the orphaned kid who survived by making himself useful to dangerous people, and who built his career on the same logic. That history doesn’t excuse the patterns, but it makes them legible in a way that the first five episodes don’t quite earn on their own. Kang Hoon, opposite him as Joo-yeon, plays a man who falls in love with genuine honesty, not knowing he’s falling for a fiction. The sadness of his arc is that the love was real even if the person wasn’t. Summer Strike (2022) navigates a similar emotional topology — two people meeting in spaces they built to avoid their real lives — and Dear Hyeri is in the same register, if a few degrees heavier.

Where Dear Hyeri loses you is in the convenience of its plotting. Eun-ho disappears for a month and barely anyone notices until Joo-yeon goes looking. The sister mystery gets resolved more quickly than the drama earns. And the romantic resolution leans on Hyun-oh’s backstory more than on demonstrated change — the show explains him in Episode 6, but doesn’t fully show him doing the work of becoming different. These are structural problems, and they keep a drama with a genuinely unusual central performance from reaching the heights it occasionally glimpses. Still: the farewell party in the finale is worth the journey. The DID premise is handled with more emotional care than most dramas would give it, and Shin Hae-sun’s dual performance is the most technically demanding thing she’s done on screen.

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Shin Hae-sun’s physically distinct dual performance — posture as character identity
The farewell party for Hye-ri — grief and gratitude delivered as the same gesture
DID handled as emotional logic, not as plot device

What to know first
Plot conveniences stack up in the back half — requires some suspension of disbelief
Low MDL count (949 users) — quiet cult drama, not a consensus hit
Romantic resolution depends more on backstory than visible growth

8.0 / 10
A drama about a woman who built someone else out of her grief — and the long, difficult work of deciding to be herself again.
