K-pop Idol
Fantasy

Im Sol (Kim Hye-yoon) has spent years rebuilding her life after an accident cut short her dreams of becoming a film director. The one constant through all of it: Ryu Sun-jae (Byeon Woo-seok), a K-pop idol whose music she clung to during her lowest moments. When news breaks that Sun-jae has died, Sol’s world collapses — and then something impossible happens. She wakes up in 2008, fifteen years in the past, standing face to face with a 19-year-old Sun-jae who has no idea who she is.

What begins as a desperate mission to save her idol spirals into something far more complicated. Because the closer Sol gets to Sun-jae, the more she realizes: he wasn’t a stranger to her. And the more she changes the past to protect him, the more the future shifts in ways she never anticipated. Lovely Runner is the rare time-travel drama that earns its emotional payoffs — a love story built on fifteen years of near-misses, parallel timelines, and two people who keep finding each other no matter what.

📺 Episode Guide

Spoiler-light recaps — enough to remember where you left off, nothing that ruins the ride.

Lovely Runner Episode 1 — The Fan Who Ran
EP 01
The Fan Who Ran
April 8, 2024
Im Sol’s world — and her reason for staying in it — is established in the first twenty minutes with a gut-punch efficiency. Kim Hye-yoon plays grief with her whole face: the scene where Sol watches the news is not subtle and doesn’t need to be. When the time slip lands her back in 2008, the shift in atmosphere is immediate. The drama knows exactly what it’s doing from minute one.

Lovely Runner Episode 2 — High School Rules
EP 02
High School Rules
April 9, 2024
Sol tries to navigate 2008 while keeping Sun-jae alive and maintaining a cover story that makes no sense. The episode leans hard into comedy — and it works, largely because Byeon Woo-seok plays a teenage Sun-jae who is simultaneously guarded and magnetically curious about this strange girl who keeps appearing in his orbit. The rules of the time slip begin to take shape. They’re deliberately left vague, and the show is right to do so.

Lovely Runner Episode 3 — The Swim Meet
EP 03
The Swim Meet
April 15, 2024
Sun-jae wins his meet, and Sol starts to exhale — for the first time, something in the past has gone the right way. The celebration scene between them is the first moment where the drama lets its romance breathe, and the chemistry between Byeon and Kim lands in a way that makes every subsequent episode feel inevitable. The episode also quietly establishes what Sun-jae’s emotional landscape actually looks like beneath the swimmer-who-has-everything surface.

Lovely Runner Episode 4 — What He Remembered
EP 04
What He Remembered
April 16, 2024
The drama jumps to 2022, and the reveal of what Sun-jae has been carrying for fifteen years reframes everything that came before it. He didn’t forget Sol. He just had no way of finding her. The episode’s emotional architecture is careful and rewarding — small details planted in the high school scenes pay off in ways that don’t feel engineered. This is the episode that separates Lovely Runner from the average time-travel romance.

Lovely Runner Episode 5 — Changing the Score
EP 05
Changing the Score
April 22, 2024
Sol realizes that preventing Sun-jae’s death in the original timeline isn’t a single event to fix — it’s a pattern she needs to understand. Sun-jae temporarily joins Tae-sung’s band Eclipse as vocalist, and the scenes of him performing are the drama showing its hand: Byeon Woo-seok actually sang every Eclipse song himself, and it shows. The moment Sol registers that Sun-jae has real stage presence is quietly funny and quietly devastating at the same time.

Lovely Runner Episode 6 — Sol's First Love
EP 06
Sol’s First Love
April 23, 2024
The 2013 flash-forward shows Sol as a college student, watching an interview where Sun-jae describes meeting his first love — and Sol realizes she already knows the story, because she lived it. Kim Tae-sung becomes a more complicated figure here: Song Geon-hee plays him with enough genuine warmth that the love triangle earns its tension rather than just serving as an obstacle. The episode closes on a disclosure that shifts the dynamic between all three leads.

Lovely Runner Episode 7 — What the Original Timeline Hid
EP 07
What the Original Timeline Hid
April 29, 2024
The revelation about what happened to Sol in the original 2008 is the episode that turns the drama’s thriller undercurrent from background noise into something genuinely unsettling. It reframes Sun-jae’s depression not just as an idol’s burnout — there’s a specific, traceable root. The writing here is doing serious structural work, and it rewards viewers who’ve been paying attention to the small inconsistencies from episode one.

Lovely Runner Episode 8 — The Time Capsule
EP 08
The Time Capsule
April 30, 2024
The fan-favorite episode, and it earns the title. Sun-jae digs up the time capsule they buried together in high school, and what he finds inside breaks something open in him. Byeon Woo-seok’s performance in the scene that follows is the best single piece of acting in the drama — wordless, restrained, and completely devastating. The episode’s final sequence is why this drama has a rewatch culture. If you’re going to pick one episode to understand the hype, it’s this one.

Lovely Runner Episode 9 — The Threat With a Name
EP 09
The Threat With a Name
May 6, 2024
Kim Young-soo — Sol’s stalker and the figure behind Sun-jae’s death — steps into the foreground, and the drama shifts gears. What was a romantic fantasy now has a genuine threat running through it. Sun-jae is in surgery, and Sol is piecing together a timeline that goes much darker than she anticipated. The episode handles the transition from swoony romance to thriller without losing the emotional through-line that makes the rest of it work.

Lovely Runner Episode 10 — The Loop Tightens
EP 10
The Loop Tightens
May 7, 2024
Sol’s attempts to outmaneuver fate reach a breaking point: no matter what she changes, the threat to Sun-jae keeps finding a new shape. The episode forces her to confront the cost of her own determination — and whether protecting someone she loves means she’s willing to remove herself from his life entirely. Kim Hye-yoon carries the episode’s most difficult emotional weight here, and she doesn’t drop it once.

Lovely Runner Episode 11 — What She's Willing to Lose
EP 11
What She’s Willing to Lose
May 13, 2024
Sol takes the most drastic action yet — erasing herself from Sun-jae’s timeline entirely, betting that removing their connection will remove the threat. It’s the drama’s most genuinely hard moment, and it lands precisely because the past twelve episodes have made you believe in what she’s giving up. The episode ends on a note that made half of Korea collectively panic about the finale.

Lovely Runner Episode 12 — Fate's Counterargument
EP 12
Fate’s Counterargument
May 14, 2024
Sun-jae, living in the altered timeline, finds himself inexplicably drawn to a woman he has no memory of — and the drama makes its thesis explicit: some connections run deeper than what any single timeline can erase. Lee Seung-hyub’s Baek In-hyuk gets more to do here than in any previous episode, and he’s very good. The episode is a quieter, more contemplative hour than the thriller urgency of 9–11, and the pacing benefits from the contrast.

Lovely Runner Episode 13 — The Worst Timeline
EP 13
The Worst Timeline
May 20, 2024
Sol fails. Sun-jae is killed by Young-soo, and the drama doesn’t soften it. It’s the lowest point in the story — and the episode is designed to be felt as such. Sol’s grief in the aftermath is handled without melodrama, which makes it more effective, not less. The film festival subplot, which carries through from episode 14 onward, begins here as a thread Sol clings to while trying to find another way back.

Lovely Runner Episode 14 — The Envelope
EP 14
The Envelope
May 21, 2024
Sol accidentally takes Sun-jae’s film festival envelope — and the mistake becomes a lifeline. The episode pivots from despair to something more delicate: two people who are supposed to have never met, finding each other anyway. The writing here trusts the audience to feel the weight of what’s unspoken. Byeon Woo-seok’s Sun-jae, who has no conscious memory of Sol, behaves around her like a compass finding north. It’s the best kind of rom-com ache.

Lovely Runner Episode 15 — He Remembers Everything
EP 15
He Remembers Everything
May 27, 2024
The twist that the penultimate episode had been building toward: Sun-jae remembers. Not fragments — everything, every timeline, every version of them. The episode is essentially a declaration of love delivered across fifteen years and multiple realities, and it earns every moment of it. Tae-sung’s role in the climax — actively protecting Sun-jae rather than standing in the way — is a choice the drama makes quietly but it matters. The finale can breathe because of this episode.

Lovely Runner Episode 16 — I Remember Everything
EP 16
I Remember Everything
May 28, 2024
The finale gives its characters a happy ending — and then gives them an entire episode to actually live in it. Young-soo is gone. Sun-jae and Sol start over, together, in a timeline that finally holds. The proposal scene is understated and perfect, and the imagined wedding sequence that closes the drama is sentimental in the best possible way. It’s a finale that doesn’t just resolve the plot — it lets the audience say goodbye at the right pace. One of the most satisfying endings K-drama has produced in years.

Byeon Woo-seok had been in the industry for a decade before Lovely Runner — mostly in supporting roles, solid but unheralded. What this drama revealed is that he had been waiting for a role that required him to do three things simultaneously: be an idol, be a man quietly destroyed by grief, and be someone who falls in love without knowing he’s doing it. He does all three. Kim Hye-yoon, who has never given a bad performance, gives her best one here — a woman who is funny and reckless and heartbroken, often within the same scene. The chemistry between them is the rare kind that doesn’t feel constructed for camera angles. It feels like two people who genuinely like each other and can’t look away.

Lovely Runner (2024) — cinematic still

The drama has one honest weakness: the last four episodes don’t quite match the first twelve. Episodes 9 through 12 carry a thriller energy that the finale section struggles to sustain at the same pitch, and the villain — Kim Young-soo — is functional rather than memorable. Some viewers found this deflating; others (this editor included) didn’t mind, because by episode 13 the drama had already done its best work and the finale earns its sweetness on the strength of everything that came before. The OST deserves a specific mention: every Eclipse song was performed by Byeon Woo-seok himself, who took vocal training for the role, and the music is genuinely good — not “good for a K-drama,” just good.

Lovely Runner is one of those dramas where the premise sounds manipulative — fan saves idol via time travel — but the execution is disarmingly sincere. Writer Lee Si-eun (who also wrote True Beauty) has grown considerably as a craftsperson: the time travel logic is internally consistent, the emotional beats are earned rather than imposed, and the drama understands that its two leads need space to be fully human, not just romantic archetypes. If you want another time-travel romance with the same emotional precision, Twinkling Watermelon is the closest companion piece in recent K-drama. A 9.0 on MDL from nearly 100,000 voters is not an accident. It’s the real thing.

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Byeon Woo-seok’s breakthrough performance — idol, grieving man, and accidental romantic lead all at once
Genuine, unconstructed chemistry between the two leads that makes every near-miss feel real
Time travel logic that is internally consistent and emotionally satisfying — not just a plot device
An OST performed entirely by Byeon Woo-seok that is genuinely good, full stop

What to know first
Episodes 13–16 don’t sustain the thriller energy of the middle stretch — the finale is sweeter than it is tense
The villain is functional rather than memorable — don’t expect a complex antagonist
Episode 1 opens with material about suicide and grief — not a light start
At ~70 minutes per episode, the total runtime is substantial — budget your time accordingly

9.0 / 10A 9.0 from nearly 100,000 voters is not an accident — this one is the real thing.
