Korea is unified now, but the country is cut off from its own sea by a wall thousands of kilometers long. Mutated people called Omegas, born with fins and altered bodies, are used as cheap labor in polluted waters, and state broadcasts keep telling everyone else to fear them. Su-jin (Kim Pureum) is a young government worker whose job is to track down Omegas who slip out of their work zones. Her trail leads to an indoor fishing pond in the city and to Mia (Yeon Ye-ji), an employee who is hiding something. Su-jin starts to doubt what she was taught, and the chase turns into a question about who the state actually needs her to hate. Park Sye-young wrote and directed the film, which premiered at Locarno in 2025 before reaching Korean cinemas in 2026.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Straight talk on whether this one’s worth watching, and for who.

🎬 Director Park Sye-young Known for: Park Sye-young writes and directs The Fin, a Korean-German-Qatari co-production that premiered at Locarno in 2025. Korean coverage has singled out the film’s distinctive visual style.
🌊 Walled-Off Sea🧬 Omega Outcasts🏛️ State Propaganda🎞️ Locarno Premiere

A wall that separates a country from its own ocean is a blunt image, and the film leans on it. The Omegas do the dirty work in the water while everyone else is told to keep their distance, which gives the story a social-allegory backbone similar to what Concrete Utopia did with a single surviving apartment block, only at a much smaller scale and budget.

The Fin (2026) — cinematic still

Critics are split on how well it comes together. One review praises the political subtext and grime-punk look while calling the plot scrappy, and another finds the idea of a mutant parent who left for complicated reasons a familiar move. Viewers who liked the junkyard-underclass world of Space Sweepers will recognize the setting, though this one is far bleaker.

We are holding back a verdict for now. Coverage of the final act does not agree on what happens to the main characters, and we only publish the story and ending sections once they hold up across several reliable sources. For now, treat this page as the setup, the cast and the case for watching.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🧬 Viewers who like low-budget sci-fi that uses its monsters to talk about discrimination🎞️ Festival-minded fans curious about a Locarno title that reached Korean cinemas🏛️ Anyone who enjoys dystopian stories where the hunter slowly starts to doubt the hunt

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
•A clear, striking premise: a wall between a country and its sea
•Political subtext and grime-punk visuals singled out by reviewers
•A short runtime that keeps the focus on two women and their uneasy chase

What to know first
•Critics are mixed, with some calling the plot scrappy
•It premiered at Locarno in 2025 and is a small independent production
•Reviews of the last act disagree, so we are not spoiling it yet

Anticipation Pick— A small, bleak sci-fi allegory with mixed notices; our full verdict follows with the story and ending breakdown.
