In the present, that history collides with a dinner she can’t avoid — husband, daughter, and Detective Dong-jin at the same table — while a junior colleague starts questioning how uncannily well Tae-seong predicts Kingfisher’s moves. Dong-jin wants to confront the vigilante outright; Tae-seong talks him down. Then Bo-na tells her boss she’s done chasing two lives at once.

Dong-jin’s interview with Tae-sung’s assailant turns up the detail that changes everything: Kingfisher was in the same building as the attack once before, and whoever she is, she’s a woman. That clue puts Dong-jin closer to Bo-na than he’s ever been without knowing it. The timing makes it worse – this is the same episode Bo-na finally earns her mother-in-law’s approval by catching her voice-phishing scammer, the family at its most harmonious right as the investigation closes in. Tae-sung watches both happen at once and cannot enjoy either.

The real culprit turns out to be someone from her own past: Leila, a former colleague who never forgave Bo-na for the condemnation that ended her career, now copying Kingfisher’s method with precision that is not accidental. Realizing what Leila actually wants changes the case entirely — not clearing a frame-up anymore, but how close Leila is willing to get to Bo-na’s family to make her point.

Not Despite It

Leila gets publicly named as Kingfisher, except the case does not fully close — the inconsistencies nobody can quite explain are the ones that would actually expose Bo-na. Worse for her personally: Tae-sung already knows the truth, and he confesses that he loves her anyway, not despite it. She leaves rather than answer that. The finale does not resolve on a confession or an arrest — it resolves on Tae-sung spending her absence clearing Kingfisher’s name in public opinion, then finding her and promising to learn all of her, not just the parts she has already shown him.

What Actually Happened Leila gets publicly identified as the copycat ‘Kingfisher,’ but the inconsistencies in her story are exactly the details that could unravel the real vigilante’s identity instead of protecting it — the case stalls at the edge of exposing Bo-na rather than closing around Leila. Tae-sung, who already knows the truth, does not turn his wife in. He tells her he loves her anyway, not despite what she is, and that confession is the actual finale twist, not the copycat case.

The Family Thread Resolves First The season’s real cliffhanger was never the manhunt, it was Yul’s safety after Leila’s scheme put her in danger — and that gets settled before anything between Bo-na and Tae-sung does. Once their daughter is safe, Bo-na leaves rather than answer Tae-sung’s confession, and he spends her absence quietly working to clear Kingfisher’s name in public opinion instead of exposing his own wife.

A Reconciliation Neither of Them Negotiates When Tae-sung finds Bo-na, he does not ask her to quit being Kingfisher or trade her secret for his silence — he tells her he wants to learn all of her, the parts she has shown him and the parts she has not. That is the actual resolution to seven episodes of him closing in as an investigator: he does not win the case, he just stops needing to.

An Ordinary Day, On Purpose The family closes the season the way it opened — together, ordinary, ending on a day at the amusement park with their daughter, exactly the kind of scene Bo-na’s double life was never supposed to survive intact. Kingfisher’s future stays unresolved on purpose; the show simply stops forcing Bo-na to choose between her two lives.

The KDW Verdict A Bona Fide Killer never really needed its manhunt to resolve cleanly, because the actual tension was always domestic: could a marriage survive one person seeing the whole truth about the other. The finale answers that plainly instead of dramatically — yes, not despite what she has done, but because of who she still is underneath it.
