Seo Yi-kang (Gianna Jun) is Jirisan National Park’s most legendary ranger — the one the team calls when a rescue goes wrong and no one else can navigate the mountain. Her new partner, Kang Hyun-jo (Ju Ji-hoon), is a former military officer who began experiencing unexplained visions of deaths on the mountain after a traumatic incident. Where Yi-kang reads the mountain through instinct and years of scars, Hyun-jo sees things that haven’t happened yet — and sometimes things that already have.

What begins as a series of treacherous rescue missions slowly reveals something far darker: a pattern of murders concealed inside a mountain that has been keeping secrets for decades. The drama unfolds across two timelines — 2018 and 2020 — gradually exposing the truth about who has been killing people on Jirisan, and why. At the center of it all is a tragedy that stretches back to 1991 and a flood that swallowed an entire village.

The circle of suspicion begins to tighten.

🏁 Ending Explained

Full spoilers ahead — everything that happens in the finale and what it all means.

⚠️
Spoiler Warning — This section covers the full finale of Jirisan. Stop here if you haven’t finished the series.

The Killer Is Named, and the Past Is Opened. The finale’s central revelation is not a single twist but the completion of a long construction. Yi-kang, with Dae-jin, Il-hae, and Goo-young backing her, presents the full account of the 1991 Black Bridge village disaster — a tragedy that was not a natural event but a deliberate act, covered up for three decades by the people responsible. Kim Sol and Lee Se-wook, both rangers the team trusted, are identified as directly connected to the killings. The mountain did not make these people into killers — it only gave them a place to hide what they had always been.

Jirisan (2021) Episode 15 — Naming Names

Hyun-jo’s Liminal State — and What It Meant. Throughout the series, Hyun-jo exists in a condition the drama never fully explains in clinical terms but makes emotionally precise: after the injury that nearly killed him, he is suspended somewhere between life and death, able to communicate with Yi-kang through the mountain’s hidden signaling system and through his visions, but never fully present. The show treats this not as a supernatural gimmick but as a metaphor for the people the mountain holds — those who did not fully leave, and those who could not fully move on.

The Resolution the Drama Actually Gives You. Hyun-jo did not die. The finale confirms he has been in a comatose state throughout the 2020 timeline — alive, unreachable, but alive. The reunion with Yi-kang is not triumphant or cathartic in the conventional K-drama sense. It is quiet and bittersweet — two people on the same mountain again, finally in the same timeline, not certain what comes next. The drama resists the easy emotional release in favor of something more honest: relief without resolution, presence without answers.

Jirisan (2021) Episode 9 — Shared History

The Haedong Rangers — Each Given Their Ending. One of the finale’s most deliberate choices is spending real time with the supporting team. Dae-jin, Goo-young, Il-hae, Yang-sun, and Da-won — each gets a moment of closure. The show has always been about the rangers as a collective, not just Yi-kang and Hyun-jo, and the finale honors that. The mountain’s true protectors are not heroes or investigators by trade. They are people who chose to show up, again and again, for strangers in danger on a mountain that does not forgive carelessness.

What the Mountain Is, in the End. The drama’s final images return to Jirisan itself — wide, still, indifferent to everything that happened inside it. Kim Eun-hee and Lee Eung-bok frame the mountain not as a place of death or mystery or trauma, but as a living witness. It was here before the people who hurt each other, and it will be here after. The last shot of Yi-kang walking through the park carries all of that weight: she is not healed, not free, not finished — but she is still standing, and the mountain is still there. Some places hold the people who chose to stay, and that is enough.

✍️ KDramaWorlds Editor’s Take

Our honest read on why this drama is worth your time — and who it’s for.

🌲 Atmospheric Thriller🔮 Supernatural Mystery❄️ Slow Burn💔 Emotionally Heavy🏔️ Nature as Character

Jirisan is the kind of drama that rewards patience in ways that feel retroactively obvious — you look back at the first four episodes and realize every seemingly procedural rescue mission was planting something. That is the Kim Eun-hee fingerprint. The writer behind Flower of Evil and Beyond Evil builds her mysteries from the ground up, and Jirisan is no different — except that here, the ground is a literal national park, and the mountain itself becomes as much a character as any of the rangers. Gianna Jun carries that weight with a performance that is almost entirely physical and instinctive, and it is exactly right for who Yi-kang is.

Jirisan (2021) — cinematic still

The first half has a pacing problem, and it is worth naming directly. Episodes 1 through 6 operate almost entirely in rescue-mission-of-the-week mode, with the dual-timeline structure doing the heavy lifting to keep interest alive. Viewers who came expecting the sustained propulsion of Signal — another Kim Eun-hee show — will find the early episodes frustratingly diffuse. But the show is not being slow out of sloppiness. It is building a geography: of the mountain, of the team, of the relationships that will make the back half hit as hard as it does. Ju Ji-hoon’s Hyun-jo, in particular, is a character whose full value only becomes clear in retrospect.

Episodes 11 through 15 are where Jirisan justifies everything that came before — the flood revelation, the Black Bridge connection, the confrontation between Yi-kang and the truth she came back to find. Whether the finale satisfies depends on what you wanted from it. If you came for a procedural payoff, the quietness of the ending will feel underpowered. If you came for what the show actually is — an elegy for a mountain that watched people live and hurt each other and endure — the finale lands exactly where it should. Not every wound gets explained. Some mountains just hold the weight of what happened, and keep going.

👍👍👍 BEST FOR 👍👍👍
🔎 Fans of slow-burn mystery thrillers who trust the payoff
🏔️ Viewers who want genuinely cinematic Korean drama — not studio-bound
🎬 Anyone who followed Kim Eun-hee from Signal and wants to see her range

⚖️ Final Verdict
What works
Gianna Jun’s commanding, grounded performance as Yi-kang
Dual-timeline structure that pays off in the back half
Jirisan’s cinematography — legitimately cinematic and immersive
Kim Eun-hee’s layered mystery with real emotional roots

What to know first
First half pacing is slow — episodes 1–6 require real patience
Supernatural elements used sparingly — not a fantasy drama
Finale is quiet — divisive for those expecting explosive closure
Very high time commitment — 16 episodes at 60–72 min each

7.9 / 10Give it until episode 7 — if the mountain has you by then, it will keep you to the end.
